The MOTO-GENE-B hand crank generator allows a flashlight functional prototype to be made. The K-LM-01 flashlight shows an application of a commercial product. 3 Teacher Document Presentation - Preparation of the model in kit delivered 1/2 1 - Assembling the axes in the base Fit and stick the two axes in the two Ø 6 holes in the base 2 - Assembling the spacers on the axes Fit and stick the 8 mm high spacer on axis (A), Fit and stick the 10 mm high spacer on axis (B). A B 3 - Assembling the coil Fit and stick the two base flanges into the base s grooves Take care when assembling (screw top should be on the coil side of the rotor) 4 - Assembling the terminal Put the terminal into its cavity and secure it with the 2 x 13 screw 5 - Coil wiring/ Terminal/LED Bend the two LED pins and connect them in the terminal as indicated on the drawing below 10 01

6 Educational operation 1/2 Teacher Document This model is designed to test electrical production by varying a magnetic field into a solenoid. It allows to see an energy transformation: 1 - Movement produced manually (muscle energy). 2 - The gear increases movement (5 factor with 40 and 8 cogs cogwheels). 3 - Production from electrical current through a solenoid. 4 - Production from light energy in a LED. Production from electrical current Production from light energy Movement produced manually Increase using gear Suggestions for learning 1 - Discovery, observation and getting started with the dynamo test bench Rather than assigning the test bench ready to use to a group of students, let them discover the disassembled parts and ask them to describe the object and think about what it can be used for. This strengthens their observation skills. Example of a question: - Describe this object, what is it made of, what can it be used for? Examples of expected answers: There is a light that should illuminate. There is a coil with metal wire. There is a wheel with magnets. This wheel must rotate on its axis. There is a cogwheel that must cog on the small wheel with magnets. This is probably due to rotate wheels that will produce something...turn on the LED? This object can be named a light appliance or rather generator or dynamo,... Student worksheet page

7 Suggestions for learning Teacher Document 2 - Description of the different parts When the students have looked at the test bench, you can ask them to name each part on a drawing and include all the visible features. Student sheet page 07, answers below: Part 1 - Base: White light plastic. 256 x 80 x 10 mm rectangular parallel piped form. Parts cut into a drilled plate. Used as holder to all other parts. Part 2 - Axes: Plastic or aluminium ring. 6 mm diameter x 50 mm high. Cylindrical form. Part cut into a ring. Used as a holder and guide to rotating wheels. Part 3 - Coil: enamelled copper wire (isolated with varnish) wrapped as a 30 diameter x 40 length coil. Used to produce electricity. Part 4 - Terminal: Plastic and metal. 16 x 14 x 13 high. Parallel piped form. Made using a mould around metal connectors. Used to connect wires. Part 5 - LED: Transparent plastic and metal. 10 mm diameter x 14 length. Cylindrical form. Made using a mould around metal parts. Used to produce light. Part 6-40 cog cogwheel: Soft plastic material. 168 diameter x 6 mm thickness. Cut disk like a cogwheel. Crank handles attached to the top. Part cut from a base. Used as a crank to transmit movement to the small wheel. Part 7 - Rotor: Soft plastic and metal materials. 70 mm diameter x 17 mm thickness. Disk general form. 10 attached magnets on the top; 8 cogs cogwheel attached on the bottom. Part made by assembling cut parts and magnets. Used to vary the magnetic fields in front of the coil to produce electricity. 3 - Using the test bench to produce electricity and turn on the LED Let students use the test bench. Ask them to describe what happens. Answers below : - The LED lights up when you turn the handle. - It doesn t matter which direction the handle is turned, the result is always the same - The faster you turn the handle, the more light the LED produces. - The LED illuminates thanks to electricity (presence of wires). The wheel rotation produces electricity. The magnet displacement produces a current. These practical observations about the test bench can be followed up with a simple course about electrical current production. A parallel can be seen with a cycle dynamo, a hand crank torch, a car alternator, an electric power plant Function mapping: energy transformation Identify on the drawing the main parts and type of energy with which they are associated. Identify movements of the main parts and their functions.
