4 Patented Apr. 2, ,19,631 O 4 UNITED STATES 4. Claim. Thi invention relate to plow and more par ticularly to large plow adapted to plow Very deep furrow. A general object of the invention i to pro vide a practicable plow contruction or deign for ue in plow of extremely large ize for plow ing extremely deep. Another object of the invention i to provide a imple and effective mechanim for raiing and lowering extremely large and heavy plows. Still another pecific object i to provide a imple mechanim for raiing and lowering two wheel on a plow different ditance by mean of a ingle actuating mechanim. The manner in which the foregoing object, together with other more pecific object of the invention are accomplihed, will be explained by decribing in detail, with reference to the drawing, a pecific embodiment of the inven tion. It ha recently been dicovered that in Sone agricultural region it i very beneficial to OC caionally, at interval of everal year, turn the land to a ubtantial depth of the Order of from 3 to 6 feet. The only practicable way of doing thi i by plowing, and it neceitate the ue of a plowhare and moldboard of extremely large ize for turning the oil to uch depth. The building of extremely large moldboard type plow introduce a number of new problem. Thu, becaue of the ize of the plowhare and moldboard, relatively great traction force i re quired to move it through the Soil and pecial frame and connecting member, together with pecial plowhare, moldboard and landide con truction i required to obtain the trength that i eential without unneceary Weight and ex pene. Another problem encountered in the con truction of extremely large plow i that of ma nipulating the plow in the field. Thu the plow mut be conveyed to the field while in inopera tive poition and then manipulated to adapt it for plowing. The ordinary hand plow, becaue of it relatively mall ize, can be readily manipu lated by the operator through the guide handle. The ordinary ulky plow, on which the driver ride, can be readily raied or lowered out of or into plowing poition by mean of lever manipulated directly by the operator. How ever in the cae of extremely large plow of the type dealt with herein, uch hand manipulation of the plow i out of the quetion becaue of the great weight of the plow and the force to which it i expoed. We therefore provide a power actuated lifting and lowering mechanim where PATENT OFFICE 2,19,631 Norman R. Pot and Charle R. Pot, Santa Ana, Calif. Application July 31, 1937, Seria No. 16,716 (C ) by the manipulation of the plow i under the control of but not dependent upon the phyical trength of the operator. Inamuch a large plow of the type herein dealt with are uually drawn by tractor, which can be readily fitted with pump for providing fluid under preure, we preferably provide a fluid preure-actuated mechanim for raiing and lowering the plow. We have alo found it deirable, in the con truction of large plow, to provide two wheel on oppoite ide of the plowhare, which wheel upport the plowhare clear of the ground when no plowing i being done. However when the plow i in operation and turning a furrow, One of the wheel ride in the furrow while the other one ret on the ground urface. Thi necei tate the poitioning of one wheel ubtantially higher than the other during plowing operation wherea when the plow i raied clear of the ground the two wheel are preferably at ub 20 tantially the ame level. Of coure the two wheel could be independently actuated through different deired ditance by two eparate actuat ing mechanim. In accordance with the preent invention, however, we provide a coupling mech anim uch a to permit raiing and lowering of the two wheel by different adjutable amount by a ingle fluid-actuated piton. A pecific embodiment of the invention will now be decribed in detail with reference to the drawing, in which Fig. 1 i a plan view of a plow in accordance With our invention. 5 SS 2 2,19,681 Referring firt to Fig. 1, our plow comprie a it eential element, a frame or chai, and a drawbar aembly 2 for applying traction to the chai f, a plow 3, rigidly attached to the chai f, a right wheel 4, a left wheel, and a mechanim for connecting the wheel 4 and to the chai for vertical adjutment rela tive thereto. The chai comprie a pair of relatively O long frame member 6 and 7, preferably con iting of a pair of channel iron member poi tioned back to back in paced relation on oppo ite ide of a plate 8 which upport the plow 3. The plate 8 doe not extend the full length of the member 6 and 7 but i poitioned between the rear portion of the latter. The channel member 6 and 7, however, are parallel to each other throughout their length and paced apart at their front end by a uitable pacing plate 9. The two channel member 6 and together contitute one ide of the chai f. The other ide of the chai comprie a ingle channel. member Somewhat horter than the channel member 6 and 7 and poitioned with it front end oppoite the front end of member 6 and 7. Thi member O i connected at it front end to the front end of the channel member 7 by a front cro member if and the rear end of the chan nel member 10 i connected to the rear end of channel member 7 by a rear diagonal frame member 2 which may alo be a channel Section element. The connection between the rear end of the member 0 and diagonal member 2 may be reinforced by a plate f3 welded thereto and the connection between the rear end of the di agonal member 2, and ide member 7 i re inforced by a ubtantially triangular plate f4 welded thereto. A clearly hown in Fig. 1, the plate 3 and 4 lie on top of the member O and 2 and the member 2 and 7, repectively. To further reinforce the frame and particularly to increae it reitance to twiting, a plate 90 i ecured to the bottom of the member fo, f2, 7 and f, thi plate being preferably welded all along it outer edge to the member O, 2, 7 and f and forming a olid bottom wall for the frame. The hitch or drawbar aembly 2 comprie a main drawbar f pivotally connected at it rear end by a pin 6 to a link 7 which i in turn rotatably mounted on the left end of a heavy haft 8 which extend tranverely below the front end of the chai and i rigidly ecured thereto. Thu the left end of the haft f8 pae through and i welded or otherwie e cured to the Spacer plate 9 which extend a Subtantial ditance below the frame member 6 and. Adjacent it right end the Shaft 8 extend through and i ecured to a plate 20 which (Fig. 6) i ecured to and extend below the chai member 0. In addition to the main drawbar which extend approximately in the ame direction a the frame member 6 and 7, we provide an auxiliary drawbar 22 which i pivotally connected at it rear end by a pin 23 to a link 24 which i rotatably mounted on the right end of the haft 8. The front end of the auxiliary drawbar 22 i pivotally connected by a pin 2 to a plate 26 rigidly ecured to the front end of drawbar. Thi plate 26 may be pro vided with everal aperture 27 to permit lateral adjutment of the front end of the main draw. bar. In ue, traction i applied to a coupling member 28 on the front end of the drawbar. The plow 3 conform in general deign to the tandard practice, compriing a plowhare 30 which merge into a moldboard and a land ide 32. The rear end of the landide 32 may be provided with a tep 33 for an operator to ride upon. A upporting brace 34 may alo be provided extending from a point on the landlide 32 adjacent the rear end thereof to ubtantially the midportion of the moldboard 3 to maintain thoe part in rigid paced relation to each other. A previouly indicated, the plow 3 i connected to the chai frame by plate 8 clamped between the member 6 and 7. The plate 8 i irregularly haped, and, (referring to Fig. 8), comprie an upper portion of ubtantial length, which i clamped between the chai member 6 and and riveted thereto. From the rear end of the upper portion i the rear edge of plate 8 ex tend ubtantially vertically, paing alongide and ubtantially to the bottom of the landide 32. The forward edge of the plate 8 below the upper portion 3 i curved forwardly and down Wardly and extend fluh with and i welded to the advance or cutting edge 37 of the moldboard 3. In fact the lower portion of the front curved edge of plate 8 extend between the edge of the moldboard 3 and the advance edge of the land ide 32, being welded to both of thoe element along it line of contact therewith. The plate 8 i further reinforced by a plate 40 of ubtantially the thickne of the landide 32 which extend from the upper edge of the landide 32 flat againt the left ide of plate 8 up to the lower ide and pat the rear end of the chai member 6. The reinforcing plate 40 i preferably welded at it edge to the landide 32 and the plate 8. A reinforcing rod 4 preferably extend from the rear edge of the plate 8 and 40 direct to the drawbar acro haft. 8 to apply a portion at leat of the draft directly to the plate 8 and 40 and relieve a portion of the train between the chai member 6 and 7 and the plate 8. Referring now to the wheel and wheel-up porting tructure, the wheel on the left ide of the implement i relatively wide and intended to ride upon the unditurbed earth to the left of the furrow during a plowing operation, wherea the right wheel 4 i hown omewhat narrower and during a plowing operation ride in the furrow made during the previou lap of the plow. Both wheel are rotatably mounted on arm which in turn are rotatable about a common axle. Thu the wheel i rotatably mounted by any uitable bearing tructure on a hort axle 0 ecured between the outer end of a pair of parallel arm, which arm traddle the wheel 4 and are fixed at their upper end to a leeve 2 which i ro tatably mounted on the right end of a rigid axle 3, which axle extend through a tationary leeve 4 attached at oppoite end to the chai member 0, 7 and 6, repectively, aperture being provided in the member 0, 7 and 6 for the paage of the axle 3. A collar 44, ecured to the right end of axle haft 3 and a pacing col lar prevent longitudinal motion of the leeve 2 on axle 3. Sleeve 2, in addition to being rigidly connected to the arm alo ha rigidly connected thereto an actuating arm 6. Wheel i alo mounted by any uitable bear ing mean on a hort axle 7 upported between the Outer end of a pair of arm 8 which traddle the wheel and are rigidly ecured at their upper end to a leeve 9 mounted on the left end of the axle haft 3. Sleeve 9 i retrained againt movement along the axle 3 by collar 60 on the O

6 O (0 70 2,19,681 outer end of the axle and a pacer element or waher 6 poitioned between the inner end of leeve 9 and the frame member 6. Sleeve 9 ha rigidly attached thereto and extending up wardly therefrom an arm 62. By moving the arm 6 and 62 the leeve 2 and 9, repectively, can be rotated on the axle haft 3 to wing the wheel 4 and about the axle and thereby vary the vertical poition of the wheel with repect to the axle 3 and the chai. The mechanim for moving thee arm 6 and 62 will next be decribed. Referring to Fig. 1 it will be oberved that the arm 6 i connected by a pin 63 and a pair of link 64 to an arm 6, which arm i rigidly Se cured to a cro-haft 70 rotatably mounted in bearing T and T2 on the chai, pivotal con nection being effected between the link 6 and arm 6 by pin 66 paing through aperture pro vided therefor in the link and arm. It will be oberved from an inpection of Fig. that a plu rality of hole 67 are provided at Spaced interval along the arm 6; a plurality of hole 68 are pro vided at paced interval along the link 6 and a plurality of hole 69 are provided at paced interval along the arm 6. By inerting the pin 63 in different hole 67 and inerting the pin 66 in different hole 68 and 69 the wheel 4 may be adjuted to different poition with repect to the axle 3 for a given fixed poition of the arm 6. Referring again to Fig. 1, the arm 62, aociated with wheel on the left ide of the implement, i connected by a pin 73 to a pair of link 4 which link are alo connected by a pin 7 to a econd arm 76 rigidly attached to the cro-haft TO. Now referring to Fig. 3 howing the left ide of the implement, it will be oberved that the arm 62 ha a plurality of paced hole 77; the link 74 having a plurality of paced hole 78; and the arm 76 ha a plurality of paced hole T9; o that by poitioning the pin T3 in different hole T7 and poitioning the pin 7 in different hole T8 and 79, variou poition of the wheel may be had for a given poition of the haft 0 and the wheel can be made to repond in different de gree to a given movement of the haft 70. The haft 70, in addition to the arm 6 and 76 thereon, i provided with a pair of parallel arm 80 which are connected by a pin or bolt 8 to the outer end of the piton rod 82 of a piton and cylinder aembly 83 compriing a cylinder 84 and a piton within the cylinder rigidly con nected to the piton rod 82. At it rear end the cylinder 84 i hingedly connected to the chai for ocillatory movement in a vertical plane. Fluid may be upplied to either end of the cyl inder 84 under preure and exhauted from the other end of the cylinder through hoe Con nection 8 and 86 adapted to extend through any uitable valve control Sytem to a preure fiuid ource which may be a pump and reer voir mounted on a tractor adapted to pull the... implement. A hown in Fig. 1 and 3, the piton rod 82 ha been moved into maximum outward poition by delivering preure fluid through hoe 86 and exhauting it through hoe 8. In thi poition the arm 80 on the haft 70 extend forwardly and almot horizontally and the effective length of the arm 76, 6 and link 74, 64, and the arm 6 and 62 are o adjuted by inerting the pin 73, 7, etc. in the appropriate hole in the link and arm a to caue the arm 6, link 64 and arm 6 to rotate the leeve 2 in uch a poition that 3. the arm and upporting wheel 4 extend ub tantially vertically. Likewie the effective length of the arm 76, link 74 and arm 62 are So adjuted that the arm 8 and upporting wheel extend ubtantially vertically. Since arm and 8 are of the ame length, the wheel and, repectively, are at the ame elevation and the chai i upported on a level keel at Such height above the ground a to upport the plow 3 clear of the ground. Thi i the normal poition of the plow in inoperative, or non-plow ing, adjutment. Referring now to Fig. 4, and 6 which how the implement in plowing poition, it will be ob Served that the piton rod 82 ha been withdrawn the maximum ditance into the cylinder 84 by admitting preure fluid through hoe 8 and ex hauting it through hoe 86. In thi poition the arm 80 have been rotated forwardly and rear Wardly through an angle lightly greater than 90, the haft 70 and the arm 6 and 76 being rotated through a imilar angle. In thi poition, a hown in Fig., the arm, Supporting the wheel 4, have been rotated forwardly (with re Spect to the direction of movement of the plow) through a relatively hort angle by virtue of the fact that the link 64 are pivotally connected to the arm 6 at a point thereon relatively cloe to the haft 70 and are pivotally connected to the arm 6 at a point relatively remote from the haft 3. Therefore the wheel 4 i poitioned at an elevation only lightly higher with repect to the chai frame than it occupied in the pot tion hown in Fig. 1 and 3. However the wheel (Fig. 4) ha been ele Vated a Subtantial ditance by InOWement of it Supporting arm 8 through an angle of approxi mately 90 o that the arm 8 extend forwardly Subtantially horizontally intead of vertically in the former poition (Fig. 3). Thi greater novement of wheel i obtained in repone to the ame rotation of haft 70 by virture of the fact that the link T4 are pivotally connected to arm 76 very cloe to the extreme outer end there of intead of cloe to the haft To a WaS the 4 Situation in the cae of the arm 6. It will therefore be oberved that by a ingle movement of the piton rod 82 through a fixed ditance the wheel 4 ha been moved vertically Only a light ditance o that it i properly ele 0 Wated to ride in the furrow during a plowing oper ation, wherea the wheel ha been raied a Sub tantial ditance into proper elevation to ride on the Surface of the unplowed ground during a plowing operation. Obviouly by varying the point of connection between the variou arm and link coupling the Shaft 70 to the leeve 2 and 9 the two wheel may be moved in any different deired degree to adjut the implement between nonplowing 60 poition and poition for plowing at different deired depth. Although the invention ha been explained by decribing in detail a pecific embodiment thereof, it i to be undertood that variou change and modification can be made in the particular tructure hown without departing from the invention, and the invention i to be limited only to the extent et forth in the ap pended claim. We claim: 1. A plowing implement compriing in com bination: a chai frame, a plow rigidly attached to aid chai frame, a pair of wheel poi tioned on Oppoite ide of aid chai frame
