8 EC technology history Since the middle of the 80 s, ZIEHL-ABEGG has been performing pioneering work in the development and manufacturing of efficient EC external rotor motors for fans. Nearly 30 years later, a new era is dawning in EC technology: ECblue. ECblue is ZIEHL-ABEGG s third generation of EC motors. This latest EC technology is setting new standards for control, efficiency and reliability. EC means electronically commutated. EC motors are synchronous electric motors which have electronic commutation systems, rather than mechanical commutators and brushes. The speed of the fans or motors depend on the electronically generated rotating field in the stator. The rotor with its permanent ma- gnets follows this electronically generated field inside the fixed stator. Due to the permanent magnets no magnet field has to be generated by induction to the rotor. This increases the efficiency of an EC motor compared to a standard asynchronous motor. The history of EC motors at ZIEHL-ABEGG extends all the way back to 1985 when the first samples were built and tested. In the past, the special motor with integrated permanent magnets and electronic circuitry, for motor control, were two separate units. In 2005 the European Union passed the EuP Directive (Energy using Products Directive), which was replaced in 2009 by the ErP Directive (Energy related Products Directive). With this directive the scope was enlarged from energy driven to energy relevant products. The goal of the directive: Increase energy efficiency to preserve our environment. The ECblue are already exceeding the efficiency criteria set out in the ErP 2015 Directive. 11 ECblue Reliable Premium Quality 100% of fans are tested and the test data recorded before they leave the factory. Encapsulation Encapsulation is a process of filling a complete electronic assembly with a solid compound for resistance to shock and vibration, and for exclusion of moisture and corrosive agents. It also provides much more protection against dust, humidity and aggressive environments. Better protection results in another advantage, power density, the life of the electronics and making it more robust. ZIEHL-ABEGG is testing the latest generation of the FE2owlet-ECblue axial fans at 9800 ft above sea level and temperatures below -4 F on Schilthorn Mountain in Switzerland 11

12 ECblue Flexible Add on Modules Wireless programming standard in ECblue With their modular construction, the functions in the EC116 and EC152 motor frame size ECblue fans can be expanded by simply plugging in additional modules. The add-on modules can be tailor-made to cover various applications. This means the ECblue fans have precisely the functions you need. Nothing more and nothing less. Even if the requirements placed on the ECblue happen to change later on no problem. When considering the functionality of the motors, our engineers have taken things one step further. The fans can be programmed without a hardwired connection using wireless technology. The casing which houses the electronics on ECblue motors is permeable by radio waves, providing the ability to program and configure the fans without having to spend time wiring an operating terminal. Connecting a terminal is unnecessary even during service. Status LED Service friendly It shows you the status, 24 hours a day - 7 days a week! An integrated LED, visible through the translucent cover on the ECblue motors, constantly indicates the operating condition of the fans. This means you can always see the operating status. The time-consuming connection of a terminal to check the status of the EC fans can be omitted. Various flash codes indicate the current operating condition of the ECblue fans. 12

Inside, when all doors are closed, background noise is below 20 db. It feels abnormally silent. 16 How can a speed controlled fan help you to increase your system efficiency? Calculation example 50% Airflow is needed in a 10 fan condenser array, shut down 5 fans Shutting down 5 fans leads to a power consumption of 5 kw P = (5 * 1 kw) + (5 * 0 kw) = 5 kw Reduce all fans to 50% The reduction of the fans leads to a power consumption of 1,25 kw Basic datas: 1 fan has a power consumption of 1 kw at 100% Law of power consumption dependent on speed n n 3 P = (10 kw / (1000 rpm/500 rpm)³) = (10 kw/8) = 1,25 kw P1 = 10 kw; n1 = 1000 rpm; n2 = 500 rpm 75% lower power consumption! Note: Taking the controller efficiency in consideration the power consumption is about 73% 16

17 Calculation example Air-conditioning in an office building The following example, using an office building, will calculate the costs between AC and EC technology. During the day the employees need fresh air so all fans run at 100%. During the night nobody is in the office so the fans can be slowed down to 50%. To reduce AC fans to 50% you need a frequency inverter like the Fcontrol from Ziehl-Abegg. In our example we compare 20 FE071 AC fans with 20 FN071 ECblue.
