1 Carboset 7733 Acrylic Copolymer Emulsion TECHNICAL DATA SHEET General Description Carboset 7733 is a versatile acrylic binder designed for high performance interior and exterior low VOC water borne gloss, semi-gloss, satin or flat architectural latex paints. Carboset 7733 is easy to formulate, and has excellent compatibility with dry or slurry grade titanium dioxide, various rheology modifiers and other additives. Carboset 7733 is designed to yield outstanding alkyd adhesion, resistance to block, stains and exterior durability. Blending with Carboset 7733 can enhance scrub, block and adhesion performance properties of conventional vinyl emulsion paints. 9 Page FORMULATION SUGGESTIONS AND RAW MATERIAL INFORMATION RHEOLOGY Carboset 7733 exhibits exceptional inherent flow and leveling characteristics. Typically, for optimum rheological profile in architectural enamels, two rheology modifiers should be used. One is used to develop medium shear-rate viscosity (Stormer) which is an indication of in-can consistency. The other develops high-shear viscosity (ICI) which affects application characteristics such as film-build and brushability. Several such systems are: Rheolate 30 Rheox Rheolate 40 Rheox Acrysol RM-2 Rohm & Haas Acrysol RM-2020 Rohm & Haas Aquaflow NHS 300 Hercules Polyphobe P-102 Dow Sud-Chemie TVS Reduction of thickener cost can often be achieved by using cellulosic or alkali-swellable thickeners to develop medium shear-rate viscosity. However, their use is discouraged because cellulosics can reduce gloss and leveling while alkali-swellable thickeners can increase water sensitivity. DISPERSANTS Dispersant optimization is required to attain maximum titanium dioxide efficiency; rheology, gloss and stability in paint formulation. If too little dispersant is used, gloss, hiding and color acceptance may be compromised. If too much is used, water sensitivity of the dry film can result. Often, 0.7% to 1.3% active dispersant on titanium dioxide weight is effective. Recommended dispersants include: Tamol 16A Tamol 731 Tamol 61 Byk 1 Byk 16 Disperbyk 10 Strodex PK-0 Rohm & Haas Rohm & Haas Rohm & Haas Dexter PIGMENTS The choice of suitable titanium dioxide grade is an important factor in achieving desired balance of appearance and critical performance properties. 10 Page 10 COALESCENTS AND COSOLVENTS For brushing enamels, a blend of cosolvents is generally used. A fast evaporating, water miscible cosolvent increases wet edge and improves freeze/thaw stability. For this application, propylene or ethylene glycol is recommended. Slow-evaporating coalescents are used to improve cold temperature coalescence. A blend of water-miscible and water immiscible, slow-evaporating coalescents shows distinct advantages. Texanol / Dowanol DB in a 3/1 ratio is recommended at ~ 7% on CARBOSET 7733 solids as a starting point to achieve maximum gloss without sacrificing block resistance. When the blend is made richer in Dowanol, gloss and wet edge are increased, but cold temperature coalescence and freeze thaw stability are decreased. For each formula, coalescent levels and ratios should be carefully optimized to achieve the desired balance of properties.
