CENTRAL SILO UNLOADER WARRANTY ValMetal Incorporated (ValMetal) warrants the new CENTRAL SILO UNLOADER to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Obligation under this warranty shall extend for a period of 12 months following the date of delivery to the original purchaser and shall be limited to, at the option of ValMetal, replacement or repair of any parts found, upon inspection by ValMetal, to be defective. Normal wear parts such as the auger, knives, wall knives and belts are not covered. WARRANTY CLAIMS The purchaser claiming under this warranty shall submit a warranty claim in the prescribed form to ValMetal or an Authorized Dealer, for inspection by an authorized company representative. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY This warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied and all other obligations or liabilities on our part of any kind or character, including liabilities for alleged representations or negligence. We neither assume nor authorize any other person to assume on our behalf, any liability in connection with the subsequent sale of the SILO UNLOADER. This warranty shall not apply to any SILO UNLOADER which has been altered outside the factory in any way so as, in the judgement of ValMetal, to affect its operation or reliability, or which has been subject to misuse, neglect or accident. This warranty does not cover parts and accessories which are under separate guarantees from the manufacturers and where service can be obtained from their service facilities. No warranty is extended to regular service items such as knives, belts, lubricants, paint and the like. OPERATOR S MANUAL The Purchaser acknowledges having received training in the safe operation of the SILO UNLOADER and further acknowledges that ValMetal does not assume any liability resulting from the operation of the SILO UNLOADER in any manner other than described in the Operator s Manual supplied at the time of purchase. 5 SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your choice of a ValMetal SILO UNLOADER to complement your farming operation. This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet the needs of a discerning livestock industry. Safe, efficient and trouble free operation of your ValMetal CENTRAL SILO UNLOADER requires that you and anyone else who will be operating or maintaining the SILO UNLOADER, read and understand the Safety, Assembly, Adjustment, Operation, and Maintenance information contained in the Operator's Manual. This manual covers the CENTRAL SILO UNLOADER manufactured by ValMetal. Keep this manual handy for frequent reference and to pass on to new operators or owners. Call your ValMetal Dealer or Distributor if you need assistance or information. 1

7 SECTION 2 SAFETY SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL This Safety Alert symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! The Safety Alert symbol identifies important safety messages on the Valmetal SILO UNLOADER and in the manual. When you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal injury or death. Follow the instructions in the safety message. Why is SAFETY important to you? 3 Big Reasons Accidents Disable and Kill Accidents Cost Accidents Can be avoided SIGNAL WORDS: DANGER - An immediate and specific hazard which WILL result in severe personal injury or death if the proper precautions are not taken. Note the use of the signal words DAN- GER, WARNING and CAUTION with the safety messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the following guide-lines: CAUTION - A specific hazard or unsafe practice which COULD result in severe personal injury or death if proper precautions are not taken. WARNING - Unsafe practices which COULD result in personal injury if proper practices are not taken, or as a reminder of good safety practices. 3

8 IMPORTANT! YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation and maintenance of your Valmetal CENTRAL SILO UNLOADER. YOU must ensure that you and anyone else who is going to install, operate, maintain or work around the SILO UNLOADER be familiar with the installation, operating and maintenance procedures and related SAFETY information contained in this manual. This manual will alerts you to all good safety practices that should be adhered to while operating the SILO UNLOADER. Remember, YOU are the key to safety. Good safety practices not only protect you but also the people around you. Make these practices a working part of your safety program. Be certain that EVERYONE oper- ating this equipment is familiar with the recommended operating and maintenance procedures and follows all the safety precautions. Most accidents can be prevented. Do not risk injury or death by ignoring good safety practices. SILO UNLOADER owners must give operating instructions to operators or employees before allowing them to operate the machine, and at least annually thereafter per OSHA regulation The most important safety device on this equipment is a SAFE operator. It is the operator's responsibility to read and understand ALL Safety and Operating instructions in the manual and to follow these. All accidents can be avoided. A person who has not read and understood all installation, operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the machine. An untrained operator exposes himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or death. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function and/or safety and could affect the Iife of the equipment. Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 4

9 2.1 GENERAL SAFETY 1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and all safety signs before operating, maintaining or adjusting the SILO UNLOADER. 2. Have a first-aid kit available for use should the need arise and know how to use it. 3. Have a fire extinguisher available for use should the need arise and know how to use it. 4. Wear appropriate protective gear. This list includes but is not limited to: - A hard hat - Protective shoes with slip resistant soles - Protective glasses or goggles - Heavy gloves - Hearing protection 5. Install and secure all guards before starting. 6. Wear appropriate ear protection for prolonged exposure to excessive noise. 2.2 OPERATING SAFETY 1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual and all safety signs before operating, servicing, adjusting, repairing or unplugging. 2. Install and secure all guards and shields before starting or operating. 3. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts. 4. Never climb onto SILO UNLOADER. 5. Clear the area of bystanders before starting. 6. Review safety instructions with all operators annually. 7. Never go into a silo to work on a moving silo unloader. Stay in silo chute to observe operation 8. Shut off and lock up main power switch before entering silo. 7. Clear the area of people before starting the unit. 8. Review safety related items annually with all personnel who will be operating or maintaining the SILO UNLOADER. 9. Always call upon a qualified electrician for electrical problems. 10. Do not get near the Unloader auger when it is in operation. The auger is equipped with very sharp knives. These knives can seriously injure anyone who gets close to the auger. Keep hands and feet away from auger. Also, make sure no one is near the auger when it is operating. 5

10 2.3 MAINTENANCE SAFETY 1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safety information in the manual. 2. Never go into a silo to work on a moving silo unloader. Stay in silo chute to observe operation 3. Shut off and lock up main power switch before entering silo. 4. Be sure electrical outlets and tools are properly grounded 5. Use adequate light for the job at hand 6. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts. 7. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothing when working around or on any of the drive system components. 8. Clear the area of bystanders, especially small children, when carrying out any maintenance and repairs or making any adjustments. 2.4 SAFETY DECALS 1. Keep safety decals and signs clean and legible at all times. 2. Replace safety decals and signs that are missing or have become illegible. 3. Replaced parts that displayed a safety sign should also display the current sign. 4. Safety decals or signs are available from your Dealer Parts Department or the factory. How to install Safety DecaIs : * Be sure that the installation area is clean and dry. * Decide on the exact position before you remove the backing paper. * Remove the smallest portion of the split backing paper. * Align the decal over the specified area and carefully press the small portion with the exposed adhesive in place. * Slowly peel back the remaining paper and carefully smooth the remaining portion of the decal in place. * Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and smoothed out using the piece of decal backing paper. 6

11 2.5 SIGN-OFF FORM Valmetal follows the general Safety Standards specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Anyone who will be operating and/or maintaining the SILO UNLOADER must read and clearly understand ALL Safety, Operating and Maintenance information presented in this manual. Do not operate or allow anyone else to operate this equipment until such information has been reviewed. Annually review this information before the season start-up. Make these periodic reviews of SAFETY and OPERATION a standard practice for all of your equipment. We feel that an untrained operator is unqualified to operate this machine. A sign-off sheet is provided for your record keeping to show that all personnel who will be working with the equipment have read and understand the information in the Operator's Manual and have been instructed in the operation of the equipment. 13 SECTION 3 INSTALLATION INSTRU CTIONS 3.1 DRIVE RING 1. Assemble drive rings with Ω " x 1Ω " hex. bolts, washers and nylon lock nuts (do not tighten bolts until all ring segments have been assembled). 2. Install the 3 main ring supports under the suspension cables and the 3 auxiliary ring supports to the other splice plate, use Ω " x 1º " hex. bolts, (do not tighten bolts until suspension arms have been assembled). IMPORTANT: Outside splice plates must be installed as show 9

14 3.2 COLLECTOR RING SUPPORT 1. Bolt vertical supports to the hub with Ω " x 1 1/2" hex. bolts as shown in figure below. 2. Bolt the 3 vertical supports to the triangular bracket with Ω " x 1 1/2" hex. bolts. TRIANGULAR BRACKET 1/2 LOCK WASHER VERTICAL SUPPORT 1/2 x 1 1/2 HEX. BOLT 1/2 x 1 1/2 HEX. 15 3.3 SUSPENSION ARMS 1. NOTE : Do not tighten bolts until all pieces have been assembled. 2. Assemble the suspension arms as shown with 1/2îx 3 1/2îhex. bolts (3/8îx 3 1/2îhex. bolts for wall sliders). Insert the suspension arm extension inside lower suspension arm and secure with a lock pin. Note: The long brace is only for 30íunloader 11

16 3.4 AUXILIARY SUSPENSION ARMS AND CABLES 1. NOTE : Do not tighten until all pieces are assem bled 2. With a Ω " x 3Ω " bolt, fix the auxiliary suspension arms to the intermediary ring support as shown. 7. Fix the power cord loop support to the angle bracket with 3/8" x 1" hex. bolts. 8. Install the collector ring on the central support shaft and secure with the two set screws. Fix the collector ring bracket to the bottom plate of the collector ring with 3/8" x 1º " hex. bolt and 3/8" nylon lock nut and to a vertical support bolt, as shown. This will prevent the outer part of the collector ring to pivot when in operation. 3. Fix the auxiliary suspension arms to the lower suspension arms using the matching plate and Ω " x 3Ω " hex. bolts. 4. On the incoming power cord side, bolt the power cord support bracket and the ring support to the suspension arm with Ω " x 1Ω " hex. bolt. Fix the other main supports to the other suspension arms with Ω " x 1º " hex. bolts (see figures). 5. Thread the suspension cable through the power cord looping rings, through the spacer tube (incoming power cord side only), and through the eyelet at the end of the suspension arm. Fix with the wire clamps as shown. 6. Install the other suspension cables and secure with wire clamps. Make sure the whole ass is level. 12

17 3.5 FRAME 1. The small tubes welded to the main frame sides must be facing the silo wall. (see fig. below) 2. Do not tighten until all parts in this figure have been assembled. 3. Assemble main frame sides with the central support. Use Ω " X 7Ω " hex. bolts and lock nuts. 5. Square the assembly before tightening all the bolts 6. To lock the whole assembly, drill two 9/16îholes through the ends of the auger drive support and the frame side as illustrated. Secure with 1/2îx 4 1/2îhex. bolts and nuts. 4. Install the components in the following sequence: 1-Auxiliary ring drive ass support 2-Ring drive ass support 3-End auger support tubes 4-Auger drive assíy supports (cross member with 3 holes). Note : Hole closest to the end of tube must be on the right side, looking at the figure. 5-The 4 braces 13

18 3.6 ROLLER BRACKETS AND ROLLERS ASSYí 1. Attach roller brackets to the ring drive assy support with Ω " x 1Ω " hex. bolts. 2. Install roller assemblies between drive ring and roller brackets, adjust so they travel in line with drive ring, secure with Ω " x 1 hex. bolts. 3. 19 3.7 AUGER AND DRIVE SYSTEM 1. With the hoist, raise the unloader structure to facilitate the assemblage of the auger and its drive system. 2. Assemble the wall chipper wheel assembly to the auger using 1/2 x 5 hex. bolts. 3. Assemble the auger drive ass y to the auger. 4. Lower the unloader structure and secure the auger drive ass y to the cross member with 1/2 x 3 1/2 hex. bolts. 5. Install cover on the auger drive ass y using 3/8 x 3/4 hex. bolts. 20 3.8 WALL WHEELS 1. Attach wall chipper assembly and support as shown. 2. Install wheel support to frame using 3/8 x 3 hex. bolts, do not tighten bolts now. 3. Install ½" x 4" set screw and lock nut and adjust to push wall wheels out until chipper blades clear silo wall by 1/8"-1/4 for concrete silo. See figure. NOTE : For steel silo, adjust by 1 (to clear bolt heads). 4. On 30 unloader only, adjust the gliding block 1/16 from wall using 1/2 x 2 bolts (see figure). 5. 21 3.9 PRESSURE WHEEL 1. NOTE : Do not tighten bolts until all pieces have been assembled. 2. Fasten pressure wheel tube arm using 1/2îx 6î hex. bolt, 1/2îx 9 1/2îthreaded rod and spacer block. 3. With hex. bolts 3/8îx 1 1/2îand nylon lock nuts, fix the handle to the pressure wheel tube arm. Do not tighten. 7. Close all ends of Sì îhooks using pliers, except at the handle. See figure below. 8. On a 30íunloader, Add the pressure wheel brace. Fix one end, as shown, to the pressure wheel tube arm and the other end to the opposite corner of the frame. 4. Place pressure wheel tube on pressure wheel tube arm and fix with a 1/2îx 3 1/2îhex. bolt. 5. Install wheel on wheel swivel axle and wheel swivel axle in pressure wheel tube using 1î washers and 3/16îx 1 1/2îcotter pins to secure. 6. Install 3/8îeye bolt at the other end of pressure wheel tube. Add springs, coupling plates, chain and Sîhooks, as shown. 17

22 3.10 RING DRIVE SYSTEM 1. Attach ring drive ass to the support with the dia. rods, flat washwers and cotter pins. 2. Install the back-up roll. 3. Fix the proximity switch bracket to the reducer with M10 x 20 hex. bolts. Install the proximity switch in its support and adjust to get a 1/8îgap between switch and teeth of drive sprocket. 23 3.11 MICRO-SWITCHES 1. Install micro-switch assemblies as shown on the first figure. 2. Adjust refering to the second figure. 24 3.12 HOLE FORMER 1. Install a latch ass y on the central support and the other one on the hole former arm using 5/16 x 1/2 hex. bolts and washers. 2. Install hole former arm on central support. Insert pin and lock with 3/16 x 1 1/2 cotter pins. 3. Bolt hole former at the end of hole former arm using two 1/2 x 3 1/2 hex. bolts. 4. Fix handle on door with 1/2 cable clamps. Install handle retainer using the spring on a 3/8 x 2 hex. bolt. 5. Bolt angle brackets on tube and door bracket on door using 3/8 x 1 hex. bolts. Joint brackets with 1/2 x 1 hex. bolts. 6. Insert lock pin on hole former arm for further use. 20

25 SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE OPÉRATION SAFETY 4.1 TO THE NEW OPERATOR OR OWNER 1. You are responsible for the safe use and care of your silo unloader. 2. Do not let anybody use, adjust or lubricate a silo unloader without reading and understanding this manual. 3. Do not let a child or a non-experimented person operate a silo unloader. 4. Never leave running unloader unattended. 5. Never allow anyone in a silo while silo unloader is being raised, lowered or suspended. 6. Never work on a silo unloader that is suspended. Always lower silo unloader to silage level to work on it. 7. Keep hands, feet and clothing AWAY from power driven parts. 8. Make sure that there is nobody in the silo before starting-up. Stay vigilant and alert when using a silo unloader. It is the responsibility of the owner or operator to read this manual and to train all other operators before they start working with the machine. Follow all safety instructions exactly. Safety is everyone's business. By following recommended procedures, a safe working environments is provided for the operator, bystanders and the area around the worksite. Untrained operators are not qualified to operate the machine. Many features incorporated into this machine are the result of suggestions made by customers like you. Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate the machine safely and how to set it to provide maximum efficiency. By following the operating instructions in conjunction with a good maintenance program, your Surface Drive Silo Unloader will provide many years of trouble-free service. 9. Leave all guards and warnings in place. 10. Always shut off and lock out main power switch before entering silo. 11. Always shut off and lock out main power switch after use. 12. Be sure main switch is off before resetting motor thermals. 13. Always inspect suspension cables carefully before you raise unloader to top of silo. 14. Beware of silo gases. FAILURE TO HEED MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. 21

27 4.3 STARTING UP INSPECTION TO BE MADE BEFORE STARTING UP : -Check oil in gearboxes. -Check oil in worm gear hoist. -Grease central hub. -Grease drive ring rollers. -Grease auger universal joint. ATTENTION DO NOT TAKE CHANCES, MAKE SURE NOBODY IS INSIDE THE SILO BEFORE APPLYING POWER To maintain a good ventilation of the gearboxes, the breather hole in the filler plugs (air-vent) should be kept clean at all times. Check oil in gearboxes, add EP oil if necessary. Oil level 4.4 MONTHLY LUBRICATION ATTENTION MAKE SURE THE POWER IS LOCKED OFF BEFORE INSPECTION. Ring drive gearbox Grease central hub. Do not over grease, the seal could be damaged (GREASE BEFORE AND AFTER FILLING). Auger gearbox Central support 23

28 4.5 BI-ANNUAL LUBRICATION (before and after filling) Grease drive ring roller. Oil level 4.6 CHANGING LUBRICANT Grease universal joint. Drive ring gearbox : -After 100 hours of operation, a new worm gear reducer should be drained, flushed and refilled with proper oil. -Oil should be changed at least every 2500 operating hours. -Use EP oil type. -Never mix 2 different types of oil. Be sure to drain and wash before using another type of oil. Auger drive gearbox -Oil should be changed at least every 5000 operating hours. -Use EP oil type. -Never mix 2 different types of oil. Be sure to drain and wash before using another type of oil. Check oil level in worm gear hoist, add EP oil if necessary. Change oil once a year. The hoist cable assembly will have a much longer life if it is lubricated once or twice a year with motor oil.you should do this when the unloader has been raised to the top of the silo and most of the cable is wrapped on the drum. 24
