1 Section 1-1 Page 1 CRABI 12 Month Old Infant Dummy NHTSA 49 CFR, Part 572, Subpart R FMVSS-208 Frontal Occupant Protection FMVSS-213 Child Restraint Systems The CRABI 12 Month Old was developed at First Technology Safety Systems, Inc. to evaluate small child restraint systems in automotive crash environments, in all directions of impact, with without air bag interaction. Basic anthropometry f this imptant new test device was taken from the University of Michigan Transptation Research Institute Rept Weight distribution and scaling methods f the infant were approved by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Infant Dummy Task Group. The FTSS design meets the SAE Infant Dummy Task Group anthropometry, biomechanical and instrumentation requirements. The instrumentation design incpates six load cells to provide load measurements at the occipital condyles, cervical vertebrae-7, lumbar vertebrae-5, shoulders and pubic locations. Accelerometers are used to measure head, chest and pelvic acceleration and head angular acceleration. All instrumentation is easily accessible. Dummy Features Head The skull is manufactured from fiberglass with a steel weldment insert, and the head skin is molded urethane. An upper neck load cell simulat is assembled with the head to alllow f installation of three uniaxial accelerometers in a triaxial configuration at the center of gravity (CG). A separate uniaxial accelerometer can be installed at the rear of the accelerometer mount to measure angular acceleration in the sagittal plane. Neck A flexible molded rubber neck is used to give the head assembly human-like flexion and extension characteristics. A six-axis load cell can be mounted at both the upper and lower ends of the neck assembly. Tso Chest foam and a chest foam suppt assembly mounted on a thacic spine box make up the upper tso. The shoulders are made of flexible rubber joints. A two-axis load cell can be mounted in each shoulder to measure X and Z-axis loading. The thacic spine is a welded aluminum structure that provides a mounting location f the triax configuration accelerometers at the T 1 vertebrae. The pelvis/lumbar assembly includes a welded aluminum pelvic structure and a flexible molded rubber lumbar spine. A six-axis load cell may be mounted between the base of the lumbar spine and the top of the pelvis. The pelvic aluminum structure also provides space f triax configuration accelerometers which are mounted at the bottom of the lumbar load cell simulat. The pelvis also can accommodate an optional two-axis pubic load cell to measure X and Z- axis loading. The abdominal insert is made of an open cell urethane foam. The tso flesh is molded urethane with nylon netting reinfcement. Limbs The arms and legs are molded urethane around an aluminum structure. The hip joint is a flexible rubber joint like the shoulder. The elbow and knee joints have stops to provide the crect range of motion.
