Attempt this task only with full permission from your supervisor/instructor and follow all the guidelines exactly. Caution: If you are working in an area where there could be brake dust present (may contain asbestos, which has been determined to cause cancer when inhaled or ingested), wear and use all OSHA-approved asbestos protective/removal equipment. Lifting equipment such as vehicle jacks and stands, vehicle hoists, and engine hoists are important tools that increase productivity and make the job easier. However, they can also cause severe injury or death if used improperly. Make sure you follow the manufacturer s operation procedures. Also make sure you have your supervisor/instructor s permission to use any particular type of lifting equipment. Comply with personal and environmental safety practices associated with clothing; eye protection; hand tools; power equipment; proper ventilation; and the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals/materials in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. 2 Always wear the correct protective eyewear and clothing and use the appropriate safety equipment, as well as fender covers, seat protectors, and floor mat protectors. Make sure you understand and observe all legislative and personal safety procedures when carrying out practical assignments. If you are unsure of what these are, ask your supervisor/instructor. Performance Standard 0 No exposure: No information or practice provided during the program; complete training required 1 Exposure only: General information provided with no practice time; close supervision needed; additional training required 2 Limited practice: Has practiced job during training program; additional training required to develop skill 3 Moderately skilled: Has performed job independently during training program; limited additional training may be required 4 Skilled: Can perform job independently with no additional training TASK Verify operator s concern, review past maintenance documents, and record condition on appropriate document. 7-3D9 7-3D18 1. Inspect U-joints, yokes, drivelines, and center bearings for looseness, damage, and proper phasing. 3 2. Inspect axle housing(s) for cracks and leaks plus inspect axle breather(s). a. Inspect the serviceability and condition (including any damage) of rear axle housing(s): b. Inspect axle breather(s): 3. Lubricate all drive train grease fittings. a. With reference to vehicle manufacturer s workshop manual, research the lubrication requirements for the drive train/axle componentry. b. Following the procedure from workshop manual, lubricate the appropriate components identified. 4. Check drive axle(s) oil level, type, and condition. With reference to the manufacturer s workshop manual, follow the procedural guide from the workshop manual and all OSHA safety/environmental protection requirements. a. Clean around axle filler plug(s) to ensure no contaminants can enter the rear axle assembly. b. Remove the filler plug(s) and check fluid level and type. Good: Requires maintenance: c. Collect an oil sample in a clean, sterile container(s) to be sent for analysis from each axle assembly and clearly label the sample(s) identifying which axle assembly it is from. d. Clean the filler plug and replace; torque filler plug to manufacturer s specifications: 5. Change drive axle(s) oil and filter; check and clean magnetic plugs. With reference to the manufacturer s workshop manual, follow the procedural guide from the workshop manual and all OSHA safety/environmental protection requirements. a. Using a collection container adequate for the amount of oil to be drained, clean around the drain plug(s). b. Remove drain plug(s). c. Collect an oil sample from each axle assembly in a clean, sterile container(s) to be sent for analysis from each axle assembly and clearly label the sample(s) identifying which axle assembly it is from. d. Inspect magnetic drain plug(s) for any signs of foreign particles. e. Clean drain plug(s). f. Replace drain plug(s); torque filler plug to manufacturer s specifications: Under-Vehicle Inspection Drive Train Part 2 3
4 g. Change axle assembly oil filter(s), if applicable. h. Clean around axle filler plug(s) to ensure no contaminants can enter the rear axle assembly. i. Remove the filler plug(s) and refill differential housings with the correct type and quantity of oil: Specified oil type: Specified oil quantity: pints (liters) j. Clean the filler plug and replace; torque filler plug to manufacturer s specifications: 6. Check two-speed axle unit, range change and differential locks, wiring, operation, and oil levels operation and oil level, if applicable. a. With reference to the vehicle manufacturer s workshop manual, research the two-speed axle unit, range change and differential locks operation, and service checks, plus any lubrication requirement(s). b. Check operation, serviceability, and condition for the two-speed axle unit, range change and differential locks, and associated wiring: Operational within manufacturer s specifications: Fails to meet manufacturer s specifications: If fails to meet manufacturer s specifications: List areas and recommendation(s): c. If applicable, check the two-speed axle unit s oil level. 7. Change transmission oil and filter; check and clean magnetic plugs.
