Attempt this task only with full permission from your supervisor/instructor and follow all the guidelines exactly. Caution: If you are working in an area where there could be brake dust present (may contain asbestos, which has been determined to cause cancer when inhaled or ingested), wear and use all OSHA-approved asbestos protective/removal equipment. Lifting equipment such as vehicle jacks and stands, vehicle hoists, and engine hoists are important tools that increase productivity and make the job easier. However, they can also cause severe injury or death if used improperly. Make sure you follow the manufacturer s operation procedures. Also make sure you have your supervisor/instructor s permission to use any particular type of lifting equipment. Comply with personal and environmental safety practices associated with clothing; eye protection; hand tools; power equipment; proper ventilation; and the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals/materials in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Always wear the correct protective eyewear and clothing and use the appropriate safety equipment, as well as fender covers, seat protectors, and floor mat protectors. Make sure you understand and observe all legislative and personal safety procedures when carrying out practical assignments. If you are unsure of what these are, ask your supervisor/instructor. Inspect key condition and operation of ignition switch. a. Inspect the key blade to ensure that it is not bent, severely worn, or cracked: Is the key blade in good condition? b. Fit the key into the ignition barrel and turn the key to each of the ignition positions: Does the ignition key bind in any position? If yes: List the problems and your recommendation(s): c. Lock and unlock the vehicle cabin door: Do the door locks operate in accordance with manufacturer s specifications? 2. Check warning indicators. a. Carry out a visual inspection of the warning indicator components and check manual operation of these warning devices. List any damage observed during visual inspection. Are the warning devices working in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications? Cab Inspection Instruments and Controls 2

3 3. Discuss the finding(s) with the instructor. Performance Rating 2007 NATEF Reference Number: 7-1B1 7-1B Supervisor/instructor signature Date TASK Continued Verify operator s concern, review past maintenance documents, and record condition on appropriate document. 7-1B1 7-1B7 ENGINE ON 4. Check instruments; record oil pressure and system voltage. a. Turn the dash lights and ignition switch on, but do not start the engine. Are all the dash gauges illuminated and activating and working in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications? Start the engine and record the engine oil pressure and battery voltage, then shut the engine down: Engine oil pressure at idle: psi Battery voltage at idle: Volts 5. Check mechanical, electronic, and emergency shutdown operation. a. Reference vehicle manufacturer s workshop manual and record the standard and emergency shutdown devices fitted to the model vehicle you are working on. List the shutdown devices fitted to this vehicle: Check the devices listed (where possible that they are activating and working in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications). Are they operating as described in the workshop manual? 6. Check mechanical and electronic engine speed controls. a. Reference the vehicle manufacturer s workshop manual and record the recommended idle and governed RPM: Engine idle RPM: RPM Governed RPM: RPM Cab Inspection Instruments and Controls 3

4 b. Before starting the engine, ensure the throttle/accelerator pedal is full to move without any hesitations. Throttle/accelerator movement is without any binding or hesitations: If no: Rectify the throttle/accelerator pedal movement to ensure smooth operation. c. Start the engine and record idle RPM: Engine idle RPM: RPM d. Depress the acceleration until the governor control is activated: Governed (full throttle) RPM: RPM e. Check that the devices listed (where possible) are activating and working in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications: Are they operating as described in the workshop manual? 7. Check heater, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls. a. With the engine at operating temperature, turn cabin heater on. Heater controls movement without any binding or hesitations? If no: Rectify heater control movement to ensure smooth operation. With the control lever in the maximum heat position, is the heater delivering hot air through the vents? If no: Inspect heater circuit to ascertain where the problem lies. Results of inspection: b. Turn heater off. c. Are all vent outlet louvres free to move/rotate? If no: Rectify to ensure smooth operation. d. Move ventilation controls to on position. e. With the fan speed control on each speed level, check the air flow through the vent outlets. Low speed: Good: Inadequate: Intermediate speed: Good: Inadequate: Full/high speed: Good: Inadequate: f. Turn ventilation fans off. Cab Inspection Instruments and Controls 4
