11 2013 DVN Personality of the year Rainer Neumann is now almost 30 years in automotive lighting. He started at Bosch 13 years ago, has been in Italy at Magneti Marelli for 3 years, for 12 years with Visteon, and now in Varroc Lighting Systems. He has been contributing to a lot of innovations during that time, most of which you can see today on the road. His name is associated to around 120 patents, where he is the inventor/co-inventor of, and he has worked out some of them together with various car manufacturers (luxury as well as standard car levels) to end up in final series production. He thinks the combination of being creative and also having the ability to make it really happen is very important. Rainer Neumann Vice President Global Technology at Varroc Lighting Systems. DVN interviewed Rainer Neumann, the DVN personality of the year, about the future of automotive lighting How do you see LED technology in the future? R.N.: LED is definitely the light sources of the future. The reduced energy consumption, long life time, small packaging, new styling opportunities and green environmental contribution (less CO2) are the main drivers. Exterior lighting is extensively used as a way of differentiating vehicles and brands. DRL is a good example. More and more new configurations and shapes determine the styling of the DRLs which typically uses LEDs. Also, the overall trend in using LEDs as light sources for both rear lamps and headlamps is clearly visible. However, for LED headlamps it will take a few more years to achieve reasonable take rates in all vehicle segments. LED light sources offer tremendous opportunities to design unique and attractive lamps. It can create a signature light, which identifies the vehicle brand and type. In the future, it will also lead to improved light performance for headlamps. Headlamps show a different color vs Xenon or Halogen bulbs. LED from its white light, creates the impression to have a bluish light rather than the yellowish halogen bulbs. The recognition of the road obstacles illuminated by LEDs at night does not create any colour fringes or complaints with respect to visible colors. On the contrary, the driver appreciates the clear and white light impression that he can see. LED efficiency Lm/W will increase in the next 10 years. We will have more than 1,000Lm with one module but with not much higher luminance. Varroc has created the Opti-LED solution for applications in lower vehicle segments: Great possibilities to compete with Halogen HL cost: 35 for Halogen vs 60 for LED. Varroc sees LED in entry model and Adaptive Driving Beam in option. What will be the main LED challenges? R.N.: The main challenge of LEDs is the cost of the application. Whereas the need for LED technology for rear lamps and the third stop light applications generally has been accepted, LED headlamps are still only seen on a few vehicles of the premium segment today. Varroc s target is to develop LED modules in high volumes and with best in class performance for competitive costs. This will lead to a real volume increase in the automotive world with LED headlamps in all segments. DVN: How do you see the future of LED Matrix beam R.N.: We do see various kinds of concepts when talking about Matrix headlamp systems I see a great future for these systems (either mechanically or static philosophy) but after The major task is to realize such systems in a way that the change of the light pattern due to geometry of the road or/ and with oncoming traffic has to be as smooth as possible. The standard driver has to see reasonable light control when driving. This is not yet optimally realized, but on the way. Individual controlled LED chips in a reasonable package will be the final step to be reached. DVN: How do you see the rear lamps in the future? R.N.: Yes, Rear Lamps started to be equipped with LED light sources years ago. More and more sophisticated design was introduced, pin pointed LEDs, smooth light pipes and three dimensional appearances with inner lenses 11

12 and prisms, which increase the entertainment value for the consumer. Variable intensity of the stop function for emergency cases, rear fog control and car to car communication will support this styling driven changes with technical aspects. This trend will be visible in all kind of vehicle segments in the future. DVN: When do you think it will be possible to have with LED, a better performance than Xenon at lower cost? R.N.: Very interesting question. First, we need to define what better performance means. There is obviously an indication that the color temperature has some influence on the performance rating of a consumer. Here, LED has some advantage. You need less light volume to satisfy the customer than with Xenon. On the other side, we are happy that we have consumers being able to see the difference between Halogen and Xenon, where we do have twice as much light on the road. This factor is not visible with LEDs in the next years. Maybe it is also not necessary. I think, that we will have improvements with LED light sources, when we are able to integrate our ideas of addressable light arrays into the automatic activation of different light modes and camera assisted light control. This will take around ten years. The affordable LED solution with comparable light performance to Xenon of today will be seen in 4 years. Varrocs Opti-LED headlamp concept will assist to realize reasonable costs with modularization concept and good light performance. DVN: When do you think LED will totally replace the 130w Halogen? R.N.: Not in the next 25 years. Of course, the energy consumption is an argument and as I already said will promote LED applications in the future. But as with Xenon light, we will also not manage to achieve a comparable cost level between LED and Halogen, so that we would replace totally Halogen by LED. DVN: How do you see the OLED technology in the future? R.N.: OLED is an alternative with extremely homogenous lighting surfaces, which the customers appreciate. Additionally, separate illumination of brand image signs etc. are also of interest. In terms of successful future we need to get the three dimensional parts and the automotive reliability in terms of temperature load. Finally, one has to study if the upcoming LED based solutions with grained material etc. can be realized with similar smoothness but with lower costs than OLED. DVN: How do you see the Laser technology in 2025? R.N.: This is a very cool idea which will have some opportunity as a hybrid solution between LED and Laser. The advantage already realized is the high luminance one can achieve which gives the chance to generate a type of pencil high beam which results in a range of m. This is not the design we need to improve safety at night, but with more intelligent applications in the future there is a good chance to play an interesting role in automotive forward lighting. DVN: How do you see the future of Adaptive Lighting? R.N.: Adaptive Driving Beam will have a great future but we have to be prudent with the endless movement of the light. The driver assistance systems are the future to offer improved light automatically. Adaptive Driving beam today is best, if the light control is as conservative as possible. The driver needs to detect the changes as a reasonable solution. The permanent modification in dense traffic situations will not realize this feeling. How do you see the NA market? R.N.: The North American market has always been very different from Europe or Japan. In North America, styling of the lamp has always been important and in the past we have seen some very exciting and specific styling solutions which we have not seen in Europe. Today, the availability of LEDs is supporting this approach even more. In the future, as the vehicles are getting closer in design to European cars, the demands for better light have been adopted more and more. The adaptive driving beam will also be introduced in US very soon and LED will be the main light source. How do you see the regulations in the future? R.N.: We are still a long way away from reducing and harmonizing regulations in the lighting business. More than one third of the current ECE regulations are dealing with lighting applications. We did see some progress in the harmonization between SAE and ECE regulations about ten years ago but this was unfortunately halted. Today GTB working group runs some initiatives that serve to summarize certain regulations with similar content with the objective of reducing the number of ECE lighting regulations, but this will take a few more years. In parallel, we need to make sure we include new technologies such as glare free high beam and other driver assistance systems into the regulation process as quick as possible. We cannot accept that the car industry is developing new lighting systems and the regulatory approval takes a few more years. Here, we can see real improvements with LED light source for Front Lighting, Adaptive Driving beam and others. 12
