1 May 1, 2011 Volume 9, Issue 4 Page 1 Southern Alameda County Radio Controllers President: Bob Freshwater (510) Secretary: Jim Newman Vice President: Rico Dalmau Treasurer: Jim Utley (510) Minutes of the April 9th General Membership meeting by Jim Newman Minutes Accepted as published. New Members/Prospects None. Treasury Report Due to technical error, there was not treasury report. Field Report Bob Freshwater asked for volunteers to help with cleaning out the Field s out-flow. The out-flow needs to be cleaned out to help with the drainage of the flying field and surrounding acreage. Two Club members vol- unteered to come out on Thursday to help Bob with the task. Bob Freshwater proposed increasing the the Club dues from $60 to $65 starting next year. He stated that the $5 from each member would be donated to the Viola Blyth fund. There was no further discussion and no action was taken. Art Vargas asked members to please pick up all aircraft parts after a crash. Large amounts of plane pieces are being found around the flying field. Safety Report Art Vargas stated with respect to safety that flyers need to communicate when flying. For example, flyers need to call out when they Again this month.general Membership Meetings will be held At the Field May 14th. Meeting time will be 11AM followed by a free BBQ

2 Page 2 are walking onto the flying field. Also, electric flyers need to call out that they are walking on the flying field side of the flight line after arming their plan on the arming table or after recovering their plane and walking to the disarming table. Art s main emphasis was that the flyers need to communicate to prevent problems. Old Business Scott Clinton asked members to please be careful when locking the gate at the entrance to the flying field. The lock on the gate is being found to be only looped through the first bar and not through the cut area in the chain-link portion of the gate. The problem is that the bar can be pulled up freeing the chain with the lock allowing anyone to enter without needing a key. Bob Freshwater reminded members that the locks need to be daisy chained together. That is, the lock need to be locked together lock to lock to lock so that any lock can b e opened to open the gate. A Club member brought up the recent decision by the Club s Board of Directors to make our flying field open to fixed winged aircraft exclusively. This was primarily brought up because this means that you can no longer fly helicopters at our flying field. After a long discussion as to why the Board made this decision, followed by an open discussion by the Club members, who were present, Art Vargas made a motion to make this club open to fixed winged aircraft only. The motion was seconded and passed by a show of hands. Of the members present, 15 members voted to make this club open to fixed wing aircraft only and 5 keep the Club open to all types of aircraft. After the vote, a comment was made that the desire in bringing up this issue was to make this decision democratic as if the Club s Board of Directors did something that wasn t democratic. First off, every member on the Club s Board of Directors was duly elected by an open vote of all Club members. Secondly, the Club s Constitution and By-Laws states in section V. subsection E. that [t]he primary duty of the Board is to set policies. The Club s Board of Directors, which was duly elected by the Club members did what the Club s Constitution and By-Laws states is within their authority by setting the Club s policy of being a fixed wing only club. The Club s Constitution and By-Laws are available on the Club s website at for anyone who is interested in reviewing it. New Business Bob Freshwater stated that the Club would like to send a Club Roster to each of the Club s members. The roster would include the name of each member along with the member s phone number and address. No member present objected to having this sent out with their information on it. If you would like to be excluded from the roster that gets mailed our, please contact Jim Utley and let him know as soon as possible. Bob Freshwater informed the Club that Gordon Case passed away recently and that his wife would like to dispose of his RC collection. He suggested that the Club hold a

3 Page 3 flea-market at the Hanger on the first weekend of June to sell this collection. He stated that the flea-market would also be open to anyone else who would like to sell RC equipment and planes that they no longer need. The cost of the flea-market would be $10 to non-club members and free to Club members. A motion was made to hold the flea- market, seconded, and passed by voice vote. Announcements None. Dummy of the Month None. Show and Tell None. People Behaving Badly Last week, I was watching a couple of our new members and they seem to think that when the call landing they can just land. That isn t always the case. One of them landed and there was another plane on the field.not good! Look before you land and make sure it is clear, then say landing so that other can hear you. If you have to go around until it is clear, GO AROUND! Dead-stick is another story. If someone yells dead-stick, clear the field for them..and quickly. When taking off, make sure no other flyers are on final approach. Look at the other flyers and you will know if it is clear.then announce taking off so all can hear. When bringing your plane back to the pit area, park it parallel. If you approach the pits straight in, you could bump the throttle causing injury to yourself or others in the pit area. Take a look at the above pictures and you will see what I mean. Scott Clinton is helping me out as Deputy Safety Officer. He is at the field more than anyone else and will be a lot of help. (Bob Dutra, Safety Officer)

5 Page 5 Battery History From Although Alessandro Volta in Italy is usually credited with being the inventor of the modern battery (Silver-Zinc), ancient cells have been discovered in Sumerian ruins, origin around 250 BC. The first evidence of batteries comes from archaeological digs in Baghdad, Iraq. This first battery was dated to around 250B.C. and may have been used in simple operations to electroplate objects with a thin layer of metal, much like the process used now to plate inexpensive gold and silver jewelry. Possibly one of the first uses for batteries, although there is some dispute among scholars. Batteries were re-discovered much later by Alessandro Volta after which the unit of electrical potential was named, the volt. The jar was found in Khujut Rabu just outside Baghdad and is composed of a clay jar with a stopper made of asphalt. Sticking through the asphalt is an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder. When filled with vinegar - or any other electrolytic solution - the jar produces about 1.1 volts.
