The key factors for this success are productivity gained by manufacturers in Spain, consolidation of the components industry and the rise in sales recorded in Western Europe. Presently, the automotive systems and components industry is made up of about 1,000 companies, that generate 248,300 jobs in Spain. For a few years now, producers of components have focused on foreign markets, in order to balance the bad situation of the domestic market. This was the case of the 1993 downturn that lasted a few years.. The great acceptance of the new generation of the Ibiza model resulted in producing vehicle number 2,500,000 last June. This model, known as the most charismatic of the brand, was the first to be developed wholly at the Seat Technical Centre, which employs 1,250 people, corresponding to 8% of the total workforce. Martorell is a flexible plant, and allows assembly on 3 different platforms, 8 different bodyworks and 11 engines, with its corresponding variations. It was initially designed to produce 1,500 daily units. In 2000, however, Martorell achieved a monthly maximum of 2,290 vehicles per day, 53% above its planned capacity when it set up operations in In April 2000, Seat started production of the Cordoba model in the VW plant located in Pacheco, Argentina. Seat s total Purchasing reached 5,100 million and, over the last 5 financial years, volume has increased by 10%. It is estimated that only in Catalonia 40,000 workers are employed by Seat suppliers. 4 Survey on Spain / Autoindustria.com 18/04/01 Pag. 4 Ford _ There has also been good news for the Almussafes (Valencia) factory: It has been chosen to produce the new Ford Fiesta, together with the Köln plant. Similarly, Mazda Motor Corp elected this plant to produce its segment B models for Europe. As well as these models, the plant will continue to assemble the Ka and Focus. These projects will contribute to promote the set up of new suppliers at the Ford industrial park, which currently employs people. The rise in production will amount to between 150,000 and 200,000 units of the new Fiesta (production will start in the first quarter of 2002) and 40,000 units of the Mazda, intended to replace the Demio. During 2000, Ford Almussafes has beaten its record, with 343,790 units produced, of which. 197,000 correspond to the Focus and 146,000 to the Ka. Renault Renault España exceeded production of half a million vehicles in both its factories. At its Valladolid plant, 280,600 Renault Clio were manufactured, whereas at Palencia, production of the Mégane model, reached 255,600 units. Important investments have taken place in Valladolid, which involve a number of inlaying presses and a new raboutage system, used for welding bodyworks with different widths. This, in turn, results in reductions in total weight of the vehicle. As part of its cost reduction strategy, Renault is driving the introduction of supplier parks. To this end, conversations have already taken place with Spanish suppliers, in order to bring them nearer to production lines. Operations have already started in Sandouville and Flins. Nissan, partner of Renault, has announced production in Barcelona of the X-83 van, jointly developed with GM. 5 Survey on Spain / Autoindustria.com 18/04/01 Pag. 5 Mercedes Benz The Daimler Chrysler management has ventured Vitoria and Barcelona plants for production of the NCV2 project (New Concept Van 2), that will enter production in mid The Vitoria factory produced 89,673 units in 2000 of the Vito and Viano models. In addition, the works for a new assembly unit have progressed, which will occupy 80,000 sq.m. A new supplier estate will also be set up in the surroundings of the new unit. This year the set up of a new supplier estate was decided, in the surroundings of the new final assembly plant in Vitoria. The results of this agreement will be reductions in logistics costs (by postponing assembly of variations) and production time cycles, as well as further involvement of suppliers in operations. Six suppliers will set up subsidiaries, on a surface of 20,000 sq.m., and will provide the most important complete modules for the NCV2. Production in the industrial estate will start in summer 2002, and the suppliers involved are Benteler, SAS (Sommer-Allibert- Siemens) and SAI (Sommer-Allibert-Industrie), providing dashboards and interior panels. Hella-Behr, in turn, will produce fronts for vehicles, and Faurecia and Antolin will distribute seats. The Vitoria plant currently relies on 470 direct suppliers, 45% of them Spanish. Its policy of ordering complete modules will result in a drop in its number of direct suppliers to 200. The Villaverde (Madrid) factory will start production of two new vehicles based on the A platform: The A8, as it is known internally, and the Pluriel, which has already been presented at various motor shows and will be produced exclusively at this plant. Production of these models will take place together with current production of the Citroën Xsara and Peugeot 306. With a production of 437,349 vehicles, PSA Vigo has set an example for the rest of the group. Furthermore, it is dispatching CKD modules to other PSA plants in Palomar (Argentina) and Porto Real (Brasil), of the Berlingo, Partner and Picasso models. It employs 10,300 people and relies on 1090 direct suppliers, 60% of them Spanish. 7 Survey on Spain / Autoindustria.com 18/04/01 Pag. 7 Spanish Suppliers At present, Spanish suppliers are undertaking an important international growth process, with investments in Central Europe (Poland and Czechia), Brasil, Mexico and Argentina. Corporación Mondragón plans opening 13 plants abroad over the next five years, with which it forecasts quadrupling its turnover by 2004, reaching 1,500 million. Grupo Antolin has presence in 17 countries. Recently, Antolin penetrated in Corea and Tailand and will penetrate China and is also considering starting up in Japan. Meanwhile, Ficosa has set up its headquarters for the Mid East in Turkey. Regions The 280 companies in the Basque Country recorded a total turnover of million in 2000, generating 43,200 direct jobs. On the whole, 21% of business comes from replacements (aftermarket). We can find important groups operating in the region, such as Dalphi Metal, Grupo Copo, Aludec Ibérica, Viza, and other medium sized ones like Pirelo S.L. In 2000, construction of an

Virtual photo of Galician Automotive Technological Center E-procurement In Spain, both companies and institutions have joined in the search for new techniques that allow cost reductions and competitiveness gains. Odette España is testing the benefits of the VPN (virtual private network), that will enhance data transmission in the sector, together with Nissan, Aceralia, Citroën, Dalphi Metal and Cad Tech. Automotive assemblers are presently in the process of introducing e-procurement practices. Mercedes Benz, beside Diebold and Debis, started operating under the Covisint Purchasing Platform, being the first European supplier in doing so. Seat, in turn, progressed in the introduction of a system for sending bid requests via the internet During 2000, Autoindustria.com has deve loped a network of component manufacturers from Spain and Portugal. They use a system for sending requests for quote on the internet, that not only allows to assess new suppliers but to maximise information flows.
