Thank you for purchasing this product from ERM Products. We appreciate your interest in our unique product line as we try to offer our customers an alternative to today s traditional products. This universal headlight flasher is programmed with 28 flash patterns to choose from. Using the provided pushbuttons, simply scroll through the list and leave the flasher on the desired pattern. The flasher displays your selected pattern every time it s powered up. This document describes: How to change the flash pattern How to connect the High Beam Override How to utilize the Night-time Cutoff Our exclusive One-Touch deactivation/activation How to install in a Positive Switched or Ground Switched headlight system How to install in a single fuse or dual fuse headlight system Wire Color and Meaning: Orange: Connect to a switched +12 Volt source with a 1 amp fuse Green: Connect to a reliable ground Yellow: Positive input for flasher override Yellow with a Green stripe: Negative input for flasher override Red: Relay s common terminal wired to headlight Black: Relay s normally open terminal (seee setup diagram) White: Relay s normally closed terminal (see setup diagram) Specifications: Input Voltage: 12 VDC Operating Current: 0.05 Amps Override Mode Current Draw: 0.02 Amps Current Draw While Off: 0 Amps Relay Current: Rated to 10 Amps each (402) Page 1 of 7 info@ermproducts.net
Programming your flasher: Make sure that all override inputs are turned off and then apply power to your flasher. The flasher will display the last pattern viewed Changing the Flash Patterns When power is applied and the flasher is in operation, pressing Button 3 will advance the flasher to the next flash pattern. Pressing Button 2 will return the flasher to the previous flash pattern. Using just these two buttons will scroll the flasher through its 28 flash patterns. When reaching pattern 28 in the pattern list, another scroll forward will loop around to pattern 1 again. Likewise, when scrolling backwards past pattern 1, it loops to pattern 28. Pressing button 1 will always return the flasher to flash pattern 1. Flash Pattern List 1) 300 Alt. FPM 2) 200 Alt. FPM 3) 150 Alt. FPM 4) 100 Alt. FPM 5) 75 Alt. FPM 6) 300 Alt. 3 High Beam Override One feature you should connect is the high beam override. Depending on your setup (positive or negative switching), you should connect the YELLOW or YELLOW with a GREEN stripe wire to one of the relay s WHITE wires. By doing this, when you turn on your high beam switch while the flasher is in operation, the flasher will deactivate. You will only need to connect one wire to the relay s WHITE wire in order to deactivate the flasher. Optional Cutoff Feature If your region or specific application requires the flasher to deactivate under certain conditions, then this flasher has a cutoff feature that performs this function. This flasher provides the installer with four deactivation methods. There are two positive inputs (YELLOW wires) and two negative inputs (YELLOW wires with a GREEN stripe). Each input is isolated from each other and has reverse polarity protection. To use this feature, connect the appropriate cutoff wire to the triggering source. If your flasher must be disabled for night-time operations, then simply connect the cutoff wire to your parking lamps. If the parking lamp switch supplies a positive voltage, connect that wire to one of the flasher s YELLOW wires. If your flasher must be disabled when the vehicle s transmission is put into Park, then connect the cutoff wire to your parking brake or Park transmission signal. This is usually (but not always) a ground switched system and would be connected to one of the YELLOW wires with a GREEN stripe. The flasher resumes operation when all inputs (positive and negative) are removed from the cutoff wires. One-Touch Deactivation/Activation You can deactivate/reactivate the headlight flasher by using your Flash-to-Pass (FTP) switch. A single pulse of your FTP in any 2 second period will toggle the flasher s operation. Multiple pulses do not trigger this feature, only a lone pulse in a two second period will turn the flasher on/off. As long as the High Beam Override setup is utilized, this feature is available to you. You no longer need a dedicated switch to deactivate your headlight flasher or turn off a group of lights (i.e. grille lights), should the flasher s activation wire share the same supply. When would you need this feature? This would be useful when responding in fog at night, when onscene or even when driving through kicked up dust on dirt roads. All of these conditions would warrant low beam operations. Current methods prevent the deactivation of your headlight flasher without an external switch, and their high beam override only works when you turn on your high beams. Connecting Your Lights Each relay has three 12 inch wires exiting the flasher (a RED, a BLACK and a WHITE wire). Your connection to these wires depends on your vehicle s wiring style (positive or negative switched), which must be determined by you or a qualified installer. You can also download our manual on how to determine what switching system your vehicle uses if you need help. Page 3 of 7
Both methods complete the same objective of illuminating your headlights; however, the flasher is installed differently in each setup. By installing the flasher in-line with the headlight switch, an electrical detour is created. How the Relay Terminals Work This flasher uses relays with three terminals made available to you. The terminals are: Common, Normally Closed (NC) and Normally Open (NO). Using the below diagram as a reference, when the relay is off, the Common terminal (RED wire) and Normally Closed terminal (WHITE wire) are making contact with each other completing the circuit. The Normally Open terminal (BLACK wire) is left alone and makes contact with nothing. When the relay is turned on, the Common terminal (RED wire) and Normally Open terminal (BLACK wire) are now making contact and the Normally Closed terminal (WHITE wire) is left alone making contact with nothing. The Common terminal toggles back and forth when the relay is energized and de-energized. It is this toggling that severs the connection from your headlight switch and supplies your alternate power to illuminate your headlights. To reduce clutter, only one headlight is shown since both headlights will be wired in the same manner. A Typical Positive Switched Headlight System Setup In the image below, when the headlight switch is closed, voltage will flow towards the headlight but will be diverted up into the relay (WHITE wire) and back out of the relay (RED wire) to the headlights and then to ground, completing the circuit. The relay s BLACK wire should be connected to a fused positive 12 Volts. Since the BLACK wire is bypassing your normally fused source (fuse not shown on headlight switch supply line), you must still protect the wires from an overload or short circuit. Try to match the fuse with what is currently in place for your headlight system. Page 4 of 7
A Typical Ground Switched Headlight System Setup In the ground switched setup, when the headlight switch is closed, voltage will flow through the headlight and will then be diverted up into the relay (RED wire) and back out of the relay (WHITE wire) out to ground, completing the circuit. The relay s BLACK wire should be connected to a fused ground. Try to match the fuse with what is currently in place for your headlight system. Always protect your wires with fuses. Page 5 of 7
Single Fuse vs. Dual Fuse Headlights There are two ways a vehicle s headlight system can be wired. They are a single fuse system and a dual fuse system. The easiest way to identify this is to look at your fuse panel or vehicle s operating manual. When you find your headlight fuse, a dual fuse system will indicate a fuse for the left high beam and right high beam. Different manufacturers use different abbreviations for their labels, so please reference your owner s manual for their definitions. Reviewing the picture below, compare your setup to the appropriate diagram and cut your wires where indicated by the X. Cutting the wires in the correct location will make utilizing the override features less troublesome. Regardless of which setup your vehicle is, each wire cut creates the same electrical detour in both setups. Electrical Considerations Installing this 12 Volt flasher in a vehicle that provides 24 Volts or greater will damage the relays on this product. This unit draws no current while off due to the relay connection. Each relay has a load rating of 10 Amps and should not be exceeded to prolong the life of the relays. To further protect the product, it is recommended for the installer to install a fuse for each relay input and a 1 Amp fuse for the flasher supply. Fuses protect your investments! For questions regarding any products from ERM Products or about the installation of this product, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help. Page 6 of 7
Troubleshooting Symptom: Solution: Flasher not operating when turned on Verify fuse is still intact Verify there is 12 Volts present on the Orange wire Verify the Green wire is properly grounded Verify the override inputs are not active Radio interference when flasher is operating Verify the Orange and Green wires are NOT connected to the same circuit as your radio equipment. Your radio equipment must have its own dedicated supply. Connect the Green wire close to the ground terminal of the battery Flasher stops working when parking lights or low beams are turned on If the flasher works when the lights are turned off, then the override feature has been installed and activated. To deactivate this feature, the override wires need not be connected to anything.
