2 Getting Started These cable joints and terminations must be installed by a skilled and competent tradesperson. Check the kit contents to ensure the termination will fit the cable to be terminated. Check the kit contents against Bills of Materials (BOM), to ensure that the kit is complete. The heat shrink tubes should be smooth and free from wrinkles, scratches, jagged cuts and damage. Read the instructions before commencing as procedures could change. This instruction contains 7 pages. General Tips and Instructions Always keep the work area and cables clean. When shrinking, always use a propane [preferred] or butane gas torch. Apply heat circumferentially around the tubes, ensuring correct heat application so that the tubes shrink evenly to the correct material wall thickness. Only use the gas torch in a properly ventilated and safe environment. Ensure that the shrunk tubing are free from wrinkles and air bubbles during and after heating. Cable Preparation Tips Always keep the cable outer sheaths clean and free from dust, oil and mud. Take extreme care not too cut or nick the cable insulation during preparation. When sanding XLPE cable, abrade circumferentially around the core insulation. Only use presoaked cleaning tissue supplied with this kit to clean XLPE insulation and heatshrink tubes. Clean and degrease all surfaces that will have mastic applied. DISCLAIMER The information provided in these instructions is for the use of competent trained installers. 3 1. Cut cable to required distance. Remove the outer sheath to dimension L in table 1. Degrease and clean the outer- sheath 100mm below the L measurement. L= Minimum Length of Tail NOTE; For Armored Cables, use Instruction PJT A in the Power Joint Range. Table 1 Cable voltage L = (Min.) Indoor Dimension L = (Min.) Outdoor Dimension 6.37/11kV 500mm 700mm 2. Remove the bedding ( if required), at dimension L1= 10 mm as shown in fig. 2. Remove the release paper and wrap one layer of red mastic tape [RSM], lightly stretching and overlapping on to the outer sheath from the cut to around 80mm. NOTE; If Double Brass Tape is used in termination, physically connect the screen wires to the Double Brass Tape with 3 raps of copper binding tape. 3. Bend the screen wires onto the cable outer sheath and secure with a PVC tape to the outer sheath about 150mm past the cut back. Remove release paper and apply red mastic tape [RSM] over the top of the copper wire screens, lightly stretching achieving a 50% overlap. Marker Red Sealing Mastic Make a marker reference at dimension L2 200mm, as shown in fig.3, and in table 2 below. Table 2 Cable voltage L2 6/37/11kV 200 mm 4. Place the breakout glove [MV] in position, pushing it well down into the cable crotch. Shrink the cable breakout glove starting in the center of the body, working down circumferentially and finally shrink the fingers (spouts). After shrinking the breakout boot onto the cable, remove the PVC tape holding the screen wires against the outer sheath and gather the screen wires. Secure the screen wires just below the breakout boot with a copper wire binder. Trim to suit, and either crimp or use a mechanical lug to create an earth lead. PJT001-14A Page 3 of 7

4 Insulation 5. Remove semi-conductive(insulation) screen in an approved manner to measurement L2 in table 2. Clean the insulation thoroughly with cleaning tissue [CTISSUE]. Do not wipe past the semi-conductive (insulation) screen. The insulation MUST be clean, free from nicks, scratches, conductive material, smooth and also free from irregularities before moving to the next step Cleaning tissue mm Marker reference line 40 Separation line 6. Make a marker (reference) 40mm below the separation line of the semi-conductive (insulation) screen. This is your marker for the positioning of the stress tube in the next step. Remove the release paper and apply the yellow stress mastic tape [SCM] to the separation line edge of the semi-conductive (insulation) screen, lightly stretch achieving a 50% overlap. The yellow stress mastic tape should overlap 10mm onto the core insulation and 20mm onto the semi-conductive (insulation) screen as shown. The yellow stress mastic tape [SCM] must be applied evenly with a straight profile. After completing the yellow stress mastic tape [SCM] procedure, apply a thin layer of silicone grease [SG] for a length of 100mm from the end of the mastic profile up towards the lug. DO NOT allow any silicone grease to make contact with the semiconductive (insulation) screen Place the Stress Control Tubing [SCT] into position on the marked reference line. Shrink the tube starting at the bottom, working upwards. Heat in a circumferentially motion as shown in fig.9. Shrink one core at a time. Note, If you have used PVC tape as a reference line, remove this and remove and any residue left behind, from the tape. PJT001-14A Page 4 of 7

5 8 8. Cut core insulation at dimension K+5mm, where K=lugs barrel depth. Ensure there is a 5mm gap between the insulation and the crimp lug. Crimp the lug using the correct die. For Shear Bolts, install the mechanical lug according to manufacturer s insulation instructions Install Lug either via crimp or mechanical means Maximum Lug barrel length = 100mm Note Remove sharp burrs from the surface of the lug. Clean and degrease the lugs Remove the release paper and apply red mastic tape [RSM] to the lug barrel lightly stretching to a 50% overlap. 10mm Cover the lug to the top of the barrel just below the palm. Overlap onto the core insulation for about 10mm. Fill any voids between the insulation and cable lug with red mastic tape [RSM] Remove the release paper and apply a layer of red mastic tape [RSM] lightly stretching to a 50% overlap, 20mm from the top of the breakout finger of the boot. 20mm This must be applied prior to shrinking down the Anti-Tracking Tube [AT] Red mastic Tape PJT001-14A Page 5 of 7

6 Position the anti-track tubing [AT] onto the cores. Ensure that the tubes have a 20mm clearance from the breakout body, as shown in figure 11. Using a soft yellow tip flame, shrink the tubing starting at the breakout fingers, working circumferentially upwards as shown in fig a 11a. If necessary, trim any excess anti-track tube just below the lug s palm as shown in 10a. The minimum of 450mm indoor and 650mm outdoor, is required for the length of the anti tracking tubes. DO NOT cut below these measurements Position sheds [ATR] on the cores as shown in fig.11. Dimensions for the sheds are in table 4 on the following page..
