1 2012 Dry Edible Bean Variety Trials, Scottsbluff and Mitchell Ag Labs Jim Schild, Extension Educator Robert Hawley, Extension Technician The 2012 dry bean variety trials were planted at two locations this past year. A Great Northern, Kidney and Pinto trial was planted at the Mitchell Ag Lab. All market classes were planted at the Scottsbluff Ag Lab. The Mitchell Pinto, Kidney and Great Northern trials were planted with a Hege cone planter on June 4. The Scottsbluff trial was planted on June 6. Seeding rates of 85,000 seeds per acre were used for all market classes except the kidneys which were planted at the rate of 100,000 seeds per acre. The herbicides Sonalan and Eptam were incorporated prior to planting. Treatments were replicated 4 times. Fertilizer was applied according to soil test recommendations. Row width was 22 inches. Plot size was 4 rows wide by 25 feet long. Stands were good at all sites. Bacteria wilt and other leaf diseases developed at the Scottsbluff site on the east end of the field causing severe stunting and plant death. At Mitchell, the north end experienced regrowth in early September. The Scottsbluff sites were furrow irrigated and the Mitchell site was sprinkler irrigated. every 7 to 9 days from late June to late August. Fields were irrigated The Mitchell Pinto, Kidney and Great Northern trials were undercut on September 10 and the center two rows of each plot were harvested with a Wintersteiger plot combine with a finger pickup attachment on September 27 and 28. The Scottsbluff trial was undercut on Sept. 10. The Great Northern material was harvested on September 17, the CDBN and Pinto on September 18 and the variety trial on September 19. MC Yield- lbs per acre corrected to 14% moisture, DTF- Days to Flower, DTM Days to Maturity, Test WT lbs/bu, Growth Habit 1A Determinate upright, 2b indeterminate upright, 3a indeterminate prostrate short vine, 3b indeterminate prostrate long vine.
