6 2 DESCRIPTION AND TECHNICAL MEASUREMENTS 2.1 Description Forwarding trailer with single beam frame with steerable drawbar; frame with console for loading crane; hydraulically powered outriggers behind drawbar joint bolted to frame beam; loading crane, variable length wood bunk with bunks, head board; moveable axle beams with bogie axle. All individual components are welded together. Double wall frame beam construction beneath consoles. The moveable bogie axles and bunks are connected to beam frame. Rear bunk slides in and out of frame beam for variable wood bunk length. The wood bunk consists of 5 formed bunks with 10 steel stakes; 4 bunks with 8 stakes are mounted on the frame beam and 1 bunk with 2 stakes is mounted on the wood bunk extension. The crane and outriggers can be operated by 8 manual lever control or alternatively by 2+2 control from the operator stand mounted to the drawbar. The optional 2 lever electro-hydraulic control can also be mounted to the operator seat armrests. The self-contained hydraulic system and drive-pump combination can be directly attached to the PTO. Alternatively the drive-pump combination can be mounted beneath the drawbar and powered via a jointed shaft from the tractor. 4 types of brake system are available: pneumatic and hydraulic and a combination of these systems According to the German Highway Code this fully loaded forwarder trailer is classified as a transport trailer and may be used on public roads. The maximum driving speed and permitted gross weight depends on the brake system of the trailer The trailer is equipped with a lighting panel with foldaway lighting units for driving on public roads. The drawbar steering must be locked and the raised outriggers and the load properly secured before driving on public roads. 9 Brake system 1. Both wheels situated in the drive direction of the trailer are equipped with a hydraulically operated parking brake. The brake is controlled by a lever located in the tractor cab (see tractor operator manual). 2. All trailer wheels equipped with hydraulically operated parking brakes. 14 3 PRACTICAL TEST 3.1 Application field Forwarding logs between 2 6 m long, in easy to medium terrain; especially suited for forester-farmers and sideline forestry 3.2 Power The available power depends on the pulling tractor and lies within the power limits for this forwarder trailer class. Forwarding different sorts reduces power. 3.3 Recommended tractor An agricultural 4WD tractor with at least 70 kw engine power, swivelling seat and simple forestry equipment A 4WD agricultural tractor is recommended. 3.4 Drive characteristics The test did not reveal any particular shortcomings. Off-road capability and manoeuvrability: good (large ground clearance, the steering drawbar facilitates manoeuvrability) Driving speed: on roads: very good (approved for speeds up to 40 km/h) Relocation: very good (overall height 3.19m) 3.5 Loading Wood can be loaded by crane on both sides of the trailer and tractor. (Slewing angle 380 ) The lifting force at full reach is good Type 4171 Net lifting force at 4 m reach is 10 kn and at maximum reach of 7.1 m is still 4 kn; Type 3564 Net lifting force at 4 m reach is 8 kn and at maximum reach of 6.4 m is still 2,5 kn Machine stability during loading and unloading: very good (lateral stability is provided at maximum reach and lifting force with extended outriggers) The design and construction of the wood bunk is good. 15 3.6 Technical reliability, set-up and dismantling times, replacement parts, service and maintenance The reliability of the trailer is good. The forwarding trailer is sturdy and construction is durable. No damage or malfunctions were recorded during the test. The trailer can be hitched and unhitched in less than 15 minutes. Replacement part supply and service: good Maintenance: according to maintenance schedule and when required; the time required for daily regular maintenance is approx. ¼ hour and ½ hour for monthly regular maintenance. 17 5 WORK SAFETY 5.1 Work safety test certification The forwarding trailer PFANZELT Type RW 1177 (1060) has been subjected to a work safety test at the DPLF (Deutsche Prüfstelle für Land- und Forsttechnik) (Test protocol dated March 20, 2002). 5.2 Work station, attenuating forces, operation The crane is operated from the operators stand on the steerable drawbar. This task is arduous because the operator must enter and leave the cab frequently to operate the crane. The optional EHC control allows the operator to control the crane from the tractor cab. Operating the crane from the tractor cab without a swivelling seat forces the operator to adopt an extremely detrimental and therefore intolerable posture especially during stacking and loading work.
