4 Important Safety Information These are common practices that may or may not be applicable to the products described in this manual. Use Safety Lights and Devices Slow moving tractors, selfpropelled equipment, and towed implements can create a hazard when driven on public roads. They are difficult to see, especially at night. Flashing warning lights and turn signals are recommended whenever driving on public roads. Transport Machinery Safely Comply with state and local laws. Maximum transport speed for implement is 20 mph. DO NOT EXCEED. Never travel at a speed which does not allow adequate control of steering and stopping. Some rough terrain require a slower speed. Sudden braking can cause a towed load to swerve and upset. Reduce speed if towed load is not equipped with brakes. Use the following maximum speed - tow load weight ratios as a guideline: 20 mph when weight is less than or equal to the weight of tractor. 10 mph when weight is double the weight of tractor. IMPORTANT: Do not tow a load that is more than double the weight of tractor. Use A Safety Chain A safety chain will help control drawn machinery should it separate from the tractor drawbar. Use a chain with the strength rating equal to or greater than the gross weight of the towed machinery. Attach the chain to the tractor drawbar support or other specified anchor location. Allow only enough slack in the chain to permit turning. Do not use safety chain for towing. Practice Safe Maintenance Understand procedure before doing work. Use proper tools and equipment, refer to Operator s Manual for additional information. Work in a clean dry area. Lower the implement to the ground, put tractor in park, turn off engine, and remove key before performing maintenance. Allow implement to cool completely. Do not grease or oil implement while it is in operation. Inspect all parts. Make sure parts are in good condition & installed properly. Remove buildup of grease, oil or debris. Remove all tools and unused parts from implement before operation. 2 FDR3590 Rear Discharge Grooming Mowers M 4/08/13

See Torque Values Chart on page Front Roller Assembly Figure 2-1 Cutting Blades There are four blade choices to select from depending on soil condition, density of grass, and tractor horsepower. The appearance of the finish cut may vary between low lift and high lift blades. See your Land Pride dealer for blade availability. Low Lift Blades Land Pride s low lift blades are designed for mowing over sandy soil terrain where high suction lift is not crucial. Sand sucked into the blades accelerates blade wear. Low lift blades are recommended because they produce a lower suction keeping sand uplift and blade wear to a minimum. Medium Lift Blades (Factory Standard) Land Pride s medium lift blades are great when horsepower is a concern. They produce a medium suction to lift grass and require less horsepower than high lift blades. High Lift Blades Land Pride s high lift blades develop the greatest suction for lifting grass before cutting for that fresh clean cut look. However, they may require more horsepower especially when cutting tall dense grass. They are not recommended for sandy soil conditions. Mulching Blades Land Pride s mulching blades are designed to chop leaves and/or grass into smaller parts leaving your lawn looking fresher and cleaner than ever before. Using deck as a working platform can cause serious injury or death.! DANGER Do not use deck as a fan. Cutting blades are not properly designed or guarded for this use. Using the deck as a fan can result in injury or death.! WARNING Always disengage PTO, engage parking brake, shut tractor engine off, remove switch key and wait for blades to come a complete stop before dismounting from tractor.! CAUTION Do not over speed PTO or machine damage may result. This mower is designed to be used only with a tractor having a 540 RPM rear PTO. 1. Clear the area to be mowed of rocks, branches and other foreign objects that might be picked up and thrown by the mower blades. Mark any potential hazards that can t be cleared. IMPORTANT: Do not exceed rated PTO speed of mower. Excessive engine speed will cause damage to the power train components. IMPORTANT: Stop PTO rotation immediately if vibration occurs during operation. Wait for mower to come to a complete stop. Follow all tractor shut down procedures before dismounting from the tractor to check for probable causes. 2. Lower mower to ground. Set tractor throttle at idle. Engage PTO to start blades rotating. 14 FDR3590 Rear Discharge Grooming Mowers M 4/08/13

17 Section 3: Operating Instructions 3. At first, begin mowing in a low gear and shift up until the desired speed is achieved - always maintain 540 PTO rpm regardless of gear selection. Mower blades will cut better at a faster blade speed than at reduced throttle. 4. After mowing the first 50 feet, stop and check to see that the mower is adjusted properly. 5. Do not make sharp turns or attempt to back up while mower is on the ground. 6. Do not engage PTO with mower in the fully raised position. Do not engage or disengage PTO at full throttle. 7. Grass is best cut when it is dry. Mowing wet grass can cause plugging resulting in grass clumps behind the mower. 8. Grass should be mowed frequently as shorter clippings deteriorate faster. 9. If mowing extremely tall grass, it is best to raise cutting height and mow the area, then lower cutting height and mow a second time at the desired height. 10. Periodically check for foreign objects wrapped around the mower blades. Remove foreign objects only after following Tractor Shut Down Procedure on page Frequently inspect the mower for loose bolts and nuts. Tighten all loose bolts and nuts as indicated in the Torque Values Chart page 27. Un-hooking the Mower The following steps should be done when un-hooking the Grooming Mower from the tractor. 1. Park on a level solid surface. 2. Shut tractor engine off and engage parking brake. 3. Lower deck to level ground or onto blocks supporting the deck just above ground level. 4. Follow all tractor shut down procedures outlined on page 13 before dismounting from the tractor. 5. Unhitch Grooming Mower from tractor. 6. See Storage Instructions on page 20 if mower is not going to be used for a long time. General Operating Instructions By now you should have thoroughly read your FDR Grooming Mower Operator s Manual, properly attached your Land Pride FDR3590 to your tractor, and reviewed the operating checklist. You should have also inspected the area where you intend to mow and cleared it of safety hazards and foreign objects. If you have not yet completed all of these functions, it is an absolute must that you do so now before proceeding. Now that you are properly briefed and prepared, its time to start the tractor and move to your starting point. When transporting to your mowing site, select a safe ground transport speed. When traveling on roadways, transport in such a manner that faster moving vehicles can easily see you and pass you safely. When travelling over rough and hilly terrain, reduce your speed and avoid quick or sharp steering corrections. Take extra care to insure that the mower doesn t come into contact with obstacles such as trees, buildings or fences. When you have arrived at the mowing site, start the tractor, raise the deck to make sure that everything is properly attached and that the driveline is not in a bind or in contact with the mounting frame. Also make sure the tractor tires aren t in contact with the deck. With the deck still in the raised position, proceed to your starting point and lower your deck to the ground in mowing position. Reduce your tractor engine rpm to idle and engage PTO. Gradually raise tractor engine rpm to achieve the 540-rpm PTO speed. Now begin mowing at a ground speed of approximately 4-5 mph. The proper mowing speed will ultimately be determined by ground conditions, desired finish, common sense, and good safe mowing practices by the operator. Grass is best cut when it is dry. Mowing in wet grass can cause plugging resulting in grass clumps behind the mower. Grass should be mowed frequently as shorter clippings deteriorate faster. When mowing in tall grass it is best to raise the cutting height, mow the area, then lower the cutting height, and mow a second time. After mowing approximately 50 ft., stop the tractor, disengage the PTO, set the brake, turn off the engine, remove the key, and dismount the tractor to see if the mower is adjusted properly. If you need to dismount the tractor on a hill or incline to inspect, adjust, or park the mower for any reason, place wheel chocks under the rear tires for added safety. Once you have made necessary adjustments, you may continue mowing. Do not engage the PTO at high engine rpm and avoid making sharp turns if at all possible. If some one approaches while you are mowing, disengage the PTO and stop the tractor. With a little practice and experience you will become very good at operating your Land Pride FDR3590 Rear Discharge Grooming Mower. Always remember that there is no substitute for proper maintenance and good safe operating practices. See Specifications & Capacities on page 23 and Features & Benefits on page 25 for additional information and performance enhancing options. 4/08/13 FDR3590 Rear Discharge Grooming Mowers M 15

18 Section 4: Adjustments Section 4: Adjustments Leveling the Mower NOTE: Tractor & mower should be on level ground. 1. Set lower hitches and upper floating hitch, as shown below in Figure Start tractor and raise mower while watching tractor draw bar (if not removed) to make sure it does not interfere with driveline and mower. 3. Slowly lower mower until gauge wheels touch the ground and the lower mower 3-point hitch bars are parallel to the ground in floating position. Set tractor 3-point stop. 4. Set park brake, turn off tractor and remove key. 5. Rotate blades parallel to direction of travel as shown in Figure 4-2 below. 6. Measure clearance from the blade cutting edge to the ground at the front and rear of the mower. These two measurements should be equal or the blade at the front should not be more than 1/2" lower than the blade at the rear. The rear blade should not be lower than the front blade. Upper Floating Hitch Linchpin Gauge Wheel Spacers Lower Hitches Spindle Tube Cutting Height Adjustment Refer to Figure 4-1:! CAUTION Engage parking brake, shut off tractor, remove key and disengage PTO before making any height adjustments! 1. Using the tractor, raise mower off the ground and support under it with secure blocking to keep the mower from drifting down during maintenance. 2. Holding wheel and yoke assembly up, remove quick-lock pin from top of gauge wheel spindle. 3. Position 1 spacers, 1/2 spacer and 1/4 spacers as required. All spacers on top of spindle tube allows for approximately 3/4" cutting height. Adjustments range from 3/4" to a maximum of 3-1/4" in 1/4" increments. For a guide on measuring cutting height refer to Cutting Height Chart below. 19 Section 4: Adjustments Belt Tension Refer to Figure 4-3:! WARNING Excessive tension on the belt may shorten the useful life of belt and drive components. Excessive tension on the belt may also lead to a safety hazard to the operator or bystanders.! CAUTION Belt drive system under spring tension; use care to avoid bodily harm! 1. To check tension, apply force at arrow A with a tension tester and deflect belt 1/4". The force required to get this deflection should range from 7to10lbs. 2. To adjust belt tension, adjust eyebolt (#1), as necessary. This adjustment will increase or decrease tension on spring (#2). 3. Excessive tension on the belt may lead to premature failure of belt and drive components. Excessive belt tension may also be a safety hazard to the operator or bystanders. Not enough tension on the belt may lead to premature failure of the belt due to excessive slipping. Belt Tension Figure /08/13 FDR3590 Rear Discharge Grooming Mowers M 17

20 Section 5: Maintenance and Lubrication Section 5: Maintenance and Lubrication Maintenance Proper servicing and adjustment is the key to the long life of any implement. With careful and systematic inspection, you can avoid costly maintenance, time and repair.! CAUTION For safety reasons, each maintenance operation must be performed with tractor s PTO disengaged, mower lowered completely to the ground or on safely supported blocking, tractor in park or park brakes set, tractor engine shut off and key removed. Check all hardware for tightness and drive belt tension before using the mower. Refer to Belt Tension in the Adjustment section on page 17. After using the mower for several hours, recheck all bolts to be sure they are tight and drive belt tension. Lubricate items as listed under Lubrication, this section, starting on page 21. Replace any worn, damaged or illegible safety labels by obtaining new labels from your Land Pride Dealer. Information about labels is located under Safety Labels in the Important Safety Information section starting on page 1. Service Mowing Blades Blade Inspection Refer to Figure 5-1: Check blades for wear. Blade performance will be reduced as blades wear and are resharpened. Check blades to see if they are bent, deformed or split. DO NOT attempt to straighten or weld blades for reuse. They should be removed and discarded.! DANGER Bent, Deformed or Split Blades should be removed from unit and discarded. Never weld a broken or cracked blade. DO NOT attempt to straighten to reuse such blades. ALWAYS replace with a new Land Pride blade to assure safety.! WARNING DO NOT attempt to modify blade, such as hard surfacing, heat or cold treating or by any other method.
