3 Components BALLAST OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2 Important: When ballast is operating, always provide proper ventilation and never remove the lamp cord without completely disconnecting the ballast from the power supply. Failure to do so may cause damage to the lamp and/or ballast. LOCATION This ballast is intended for indoor or greenhouse use only. Avoid contact with liquids or excessive heat. It is important to keep temperatures around the ballast cool as excessive heat can shorten the life and inhibit the performance of the ballast. Extra cooling and monitoring may be necessary in the region where ballasts are located. LAMP CHOICE This product must be used with the proper HID DE lamp to ensure optimum performance, lamp life, and safety. Auto-ignitor lamps or external ignitors are not to be used with this ballast. Improper lamps may void the warranty. If you have any questions about lamp choice, please contact your sales representative. Always connect the ballast to the reflector/socket with the lamp installed prior to plugging the light into a power supply. BALLAST IGNITION AND RESTART Ballast should be operated within its rated input voltage range at all times. Ensure that maximum voltage is never exceeded or damage to the ballast will occur. When using with a generator, ensure that adequate voltage regulation is present to maintain input power within specification. TEMPERATURE Maximum allowable case temperature is 70 C (150 F). GENERAL OPERATION INFORMATION WARNINGS Use this ballast in greenhouses or indoor applications only. Position it in an area away from excessive heat or contact with liquids. This ballast does not rely on the luminaire enclosure for protection against accidental contact with live parts. For remote operations, use this ballast with a maximum lamp cord of 15 feet. Disconnect the ballast from the power supply before performing any maintenance, lamp changes, or other modifications. Contact the distributor for service if the ballast does not work after confirming the power connection, output connection, and bulb operation. Opening the ballast will void the warranty. Lamps with built-in ignitors will not work with this ballast. Not for use with external ignitors. ALWAYS DISCONNECT BALLAST S POWER CORD BEFORE MOVING THE UNIT OR CHANGING LAMPS. DIMMABLE NOTES When starting a cool lamp, the ballast will apply 100% power for 15 minutes to properly heat the gasses in the lamp. The dimming feature will not operate during this initial start-up period, but you can preset the dimming ratio during this time without impacting the warm up. After the warm up is complete, the ballast will run at the set dimming ratio. Press the dimming button to cycle through the dimming levels (IMAGE RIGHT). The appropriate LED indicator will light up to indicate selected dimming level (60%, 75%, 100%, Super). This ballast has built-in hot-restrike programming to protect the lamp and ballast in the event of the ballast turning off unexpectedly. The ballast will not attempt to restart a hot lamp for at least 15 minutes. If your lamp fails to start immediately, DO NOT cycle the power on and off. This can damage the lamp and ballast. If after 30 minutes your lamp is still not lit, shut off power to the ballast, and reconnect. This will begin the start-up sequence again. There are three ways to utilize this ballast. Simply sit it on the floor in a convenient location; use the holes in the end plate flanges to hard-mount the ballast into place with included lag bolts; or hang the ballast from a strut of chain with attached reflector.

4 INSTALLATION MANUAL 3 REFLECTOR ASSEMBLY 1 - Remove reflector and hardware from plastic bags and ensure you have all parts are shown in Photo A. 2 - Install the two eyebolts into the tapped holes on top of the reflector as shown in Photo B (for remote operation only). 3 - Install lamp into reflector connectors as shown in lamp instructions. 4 - Connect your ballast to the reflector using CSXCORD (sold separately) in Photo C (for remote operation only). PHOTO B PHOTO C PHOTO A ATTACHED SYSTEM INSTALLATION 1 - Install only one eyebolt into the tapped hole in the top of the reflector opposite the input lamp connector (see Photo B). Install second eyebolt into ballast hanging bracket as shown below in Photo D. 2 - Attach the reflector hanging bracket to the rear of the DE 1000Lh Reflector using 3 of the included machine screws as shown in Photo E. 3 - Insert reflector and bracket assembly into hole in slot on back of ballast. Slide down into end cap and secure with 2 included machine screws as shown in Photo F & G. 4 - Slide ballast hanging bracket into top cap of ballast and secure with two of the included machine screws as shown in Photo H & I. 5 - Plug reflector into ballast and install lamp as shown in Photo J. 5 INSTALLATION MANUAL 4 LAMP INSTALLATION 1. Open both lamp holders by sliding them outwards and away from the center of the fixture as shown in Photo A. 2. Begin by installing the double-ended lamp within the lamp holders shown in Photos B & C. Please note: When installing lamp do not apply any excessive force. The wire end/lead must be fully seated as shown (Photos D & E) before sliding both socket ends closed. During installation try to minimize excessive handling of the lamp to minimize fingerprints and oils left on the lamp. If the lamp needs cleaning, use a soft dry cotton cloth to wipe off fingerprints. PHOTO A PHOTO B PHOTO C PHOTO D PHOTO E 3. Once lamp is positioned correctly slide the lamp holders inwards toward the center of the bulb to secure and lock the lamp in place as shown in Photos F & G. PLEASE NOTE: Do not force the lamp holders closed. This could cause damage to either the lamp or lamp holders. PHOTO F PHOTO G HANGING YOUR FIXTURE 1 - Make sure your unit is unplugged. 2 - Hang the fixture from a strong cord or chain from both ends. Make sure you have hooks screwed solidly into the studs in the ceiling. If you cannot locate the studs, insert expansion anchors into the ceiling. The hooks should be rated to hold at least 50 lbs. each.

BALLAST WIRING TO CIRCUIT Recommended Wiring Diagram In order to minimize harmonic distortion, and for optimum ballast and lamp life, each individual ballast MUST NOT daisy chain a neutral line with any other ballasts. Each ballast s neutral line should be wired to the main s neutral line back to the circuit.

7 TECHNICAL MANUAL 6 Troubleshooting Do NOT open the chamber, try the following suggestions to diagnose a bulb or ballast issue. Should a failure occur, please contact your distributor or PARsource for replacement or repair on products with an active warranty. If it does not flicker, the original bulb is bad. Turn off power. Pull out tab from the back of the socket. Reinsert the bulb and turn on the power. Check to see if bulb is screwed in completely. Try universal bulbs. Try another bulb brand. Electronic ballast: Is line conditioned? If it does not flicker, the original bulb is bad. Check circuit panel and power cord connections. Electronic ballasts: Replace fuse. Electronic ballasts ONLY: Place bulb in known working ballast. If bulb works, the ballast is bad. Electronic ballasts: Is the line conditioned? Replacing Lamps or Ballasts Important: Never remove a lamp when a ballast is receiving power. Never have a powered ballast without a lamp inserted in the socket. STEP ONE: Disconnect power to the ballast. Removing/installing a lamp into a powered ballast can cause ballast and/or lamp failure, and is a safety hazard. Always remove power from the ballast before performing any maintenance. STEP TWO: Remove and replace the suspected bad lamp with a known working lamp. STEP THREE: If the lamp is cool, it should start immediately. If it does not ignite, allow 2 minutes for the ballast to attempt to re-strike the lamp. STEP FOUR: If the lamp does not ignite, power down the ballast and attempt another known working lamp. This reduces the possibility of a component-level incompatibility due to manufacturing tolerances of the lamp and/or ballast. 8 TECHNICAL MANUAL 7 Fixture Maintenance and Care General nit is recommended that additional ballasts, lamps, or components be kept on site for fast replacement. Ballasts nrunning lights in high temperatures will damage ballasts and void the warranty. Make sure proper ambient temperatures and sufficient air movement is available around the ballasts to reduce premature failures or voiding the warranty. ndo not run or store lights in the greenhouse unless environmental cooling systems are in operation. Greenhouses that are shut down can record excessive high temperatures resulting in premature equipment failure. nhid lighting requires special HID relays and high inrush circuit breakers. When calculating the proper number of HID lights per circuit, do not exceed 60% of the circuit breaker s current rating. nlighting sub-panels should have a fan installed to prevent high heat of the sub-panel. ndo not run lights where water will come in direct contact with the ballast or lamp. nit is recommended that a voltage monitor be installed at the lighting panel and that the lighting controller be programmed to shut down the lights if voltage levels are recorded outside the proper voltage levels. This will help eliminate any ballast failures and aid in proper diagnosis of potential ballast failures. (For more information, contact PARsource or your controller company). nwhen installing your controller, a staggered start is required in batches of 40 lights or less. nelectronic ballasts require special lamp pairings to ensure optimum performance, safety, and to meet warranty requirements. Please consult PARsource for proper pairing approval. nelectronic ballasts come with some safety shut-offs. A non-working ballast may be in shut-off mode. To reset the shut off, turn off the power to the ballast for 15 minutes. Restart the ballast to see if it is in working condition. If the ballast does not start, review basic diagnosis steps or consult PARsource for more details. Capacitor life is mainly affected by voltage and temperature. HID capacitors are typically marked 90 C or 100 C max. They are designed for 60,000 hours continuous duty at the rated voltage and average operating temperatures of 90 C. Operation over 90 C will reduce the operating life and result in premature failure. The guideline is each 6.5 degree rise over 90 C reduces the life by 50%. Lamps nit is recommended to replace your lamps at their economic life. Economic life is defined as 60% of the lamp s rated life. It is known that old lamps should be replaced to maintain optimum lamp output and to prevent premature failure to ballast components. nnever remove a lamp while it is powered. Unplug or turn of power to the ballast before removing a lamp. Failure to do so can cause damage to the ballast and lamp. non rare occasions, metal halide lamps may fail in a violent manner. The possibility of this failure is significantly reduced by group re-lamping at or before the rated end of life. In any application where lamps are operated continuously (24 hrs/day, seven days/week), the lamps should always be turned off for a period of at least 15 minutes once a week, a precaution that can reduce the possibility of violent failures. nmetal Halide lamps can cause serious skin burn and eye inflammation from shortwave ultraviolet radiation if outer envelope of the lamp is broken or punctured and the arc tube continues to operate. Do not use where people will remain for more than a few minutes unless adequate shielding or other safety precautions are used. Protective glass shielding is recommended with the reflector when using Metal Halide lamps. nrunning lamps in a lensed system will result in a shorter life. Take this into consideration when developing your lamp replacement plan and when carrying extra replacement lamps. Procedures for Replacing a Lamp ndisconnect power to the ballast. Removing/installing a lamp into a powered ballast can cause ballast and/or lamp failure, and is a safety hazard. Always remove power from the ballast before performing any maintenance. nuse gloves and safety glasses when removing the lamp. nremove and replace the suspected bad lamp with a known working lamp. nif the lamp is cool, it should start immediately. If it does not ignite, allow 2 minutes for the ballast to attempt to re-strike the lamp.
