4 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of an Effects Master Series Fixture by Wildfire. These powerful and versatile ultraviolet fluorescent lighting fixtures feature twin lamps, polished everbrite reflectors and state of the art electronic universal voltage ballasts. Each Effects Master Fixture is precision engineered to provide you with years of trouble free service. Please take a moment to read this manual thoroughly before attempting to operate this fixture. Improper set-up, use or servicing may cause damage to the fixture and/or lamps and void the unit s warranty. Unpacking Unpack the fixture and carefully inspect it for any signs of physical damage. Report any damage to Wildfire or your local distributor immediately. Included with each unit should be the following items: 1. Two L shaped mounting brackets with one 1/2 mounting hole for mounting the fixture to a standard c-clamp and two 3/8 mounting holes for mounting the fixture to Unistrut or a flat surface. 2. Two rubber friction washers that are to be placed between the mounting brackets and the end caps on either end of the fixture allowing it to be held firmly in place upon tightening the locking knobs 3. Two locking knobs with ¼-20 threaded studs that screw into the end caps. Accessories: UVT Protective Lens Kit - This kit consists of an acrylic plastic lens that slides into the housing to protect the lamps. Included in this kit are two small brackets that mount on either end of the fixture holding the lens in place. This protective lens is made from a special UV transmitting plastic and is designed not to yellow or become brittle under normal operating conditions. Contact Wildfire or your local distributor for pricing Transverse Louver Kit- This aluminum louver features 1 long blades spaced 2 apart that run perpendicular with the lamps. Included in the louver are two small brackets that mount on either end of the fixture holding it in place. Contact Wildfire or your local distributor for pricing. Setup The first step is to install the mounting brackets on either end of the fixture (see fig. 2 in the Diagrams section of this manual). Next install the lamps refer to Lamp Replacement on page 7 for correct installation. New fluorescent lamps have impurities in them which lamp manufacturers cannot eliminate completely. Lamps must be operated at full intensity for 100 hours before dimming to neutralize the harmful effects of these impurities. Although this may be inconvenient, it is necessary for good dimming performance, and achieving normal lamp life. Without the 100 hours at full intensity, the impurities may cause the lamp to fail within a week (or failure may take months depending on usage and the amount of impurities) Plug the fixture into the appropriate power source. If you are controlling the unit with a lighting control board you will need to make sure it is plugged into a non-dim circuit. Because the Effects Master Series fixtures are equipped with electronic power factor correction ballasts they will not operate correctly when plugged into a dimmable circuit. 4
5 Operation & Features WF-EM2B & WF-EM4B: Two and four foot basic units. These units are designed to be a simple high output source for fluorescent light. They have no control functions. WF-EM2M & WF-EM4M: Two and four foot manual control units. Mode Selection Switch - this switch is used to select the mode of operation. There are three modes of operation. 1. FLASH - Selecting this mode allows the unit to flash at a 50% duty cycle; in other words, the lamp(s) will be off and on for equal periods of time. The speed of flash is adjustable using the Rate knob. 2. STROBE - Selecting this mode allows for a fixed amount of lamp on time while the amount of off time is adjustable. The speed of the strobe is adjustable using the Rate knob. 3. ON - Selecting this mode allows for steady on operation of the lamp(s) per the setting of the lamp select switch. Lamp Selection Switch - This switch allows the user to select which lamp is to be controlled. There are three selection options. 1. SINGLE - Allows one lamp to work per the setting of the Mode selection switch. 2. ALT - Allows the two lamps to alternate their on times when the Mode selection switch is set to either Flash or Strobe. If the Mode switch is set to "On", then the lamp that is not on in the "Single" position will be on. While in flash or strobe mode, the Rate knob determines the speed at which the lamps alternate between each other. 3. DUAL - Allows both lamps to work together per the setting of the "Mode" switch. Rate Knob - Allows for adjusting how fast or slow the fixture will flash or strobe. WF-EM2D & WF-EM4D: Two and four foot DMX control units Connecting The DMX model fixtures are supplied with a pair of 5 pin XLR connectors and a pair of RJ-45 connectors for the DMX signal. Pin configuration for the XLR connectors is: Pin 1 Common, Pin 2 Data Minus and Pin 3 Data Plus. Pins 4 and 5 are not used at this time. Pin configuration for the RJ-45 connectors is: Pin 4 (blue wire) Common, Pin 6 (green wire) Data Plus and Pin 3 (green and white wire) Data Minus. Addressing - Set the three rotary switches on the back of the unit to the desired DMX address (001 to 512) this will be the address for lamp A. Lamp B will be the next address number in sequence. For example if you set lamp A for DMX address 10 lamp B will be DMX address 11. When either lamp A or lamp B receives a DMX 512 data signal of 6 to 255 on their assigned address that lamp will switch on at an intensity level determined by the data signal, 6 being the dimmest 255 being the brightest. At a data signal of 0 to 5 the lamp will remain off. By default the fixture will remain off if power is applied and no DMX signal is present. Setting the rotary switches to DMX address 702 forces the fixture on manually regardless if there is DMX signal present or not Programming - The unit can be programmed in a sequence via a DMX lighting control board or software to flash, strobe or alternate between lamps. For example to set the unit on DMX address 10 to flash both lamps at 50% intensity at an interval of on for 3 seconds off for 3 seconds you would first set the rotary switches on the back of the unit to 010. You would then program a loop sequence on your DMX lighting control board or software to provide address 010 and 011with a DMX data value of 0 for 3 seconds then 125 for 3 seconds. Cabling and grounding of DMX units Before connecting units to cable, it is important to understand that these units are designed to be connected in only one way. The DMX units are supplied with "DMX512 IN" and "DMX512 OUT" connectors allowing for daisy chaining multiple units together. If multiple units are connected in this manner you will need to insert a DMX512 terminator into the DMX512 out jack on the last fixture in each chain to terminate the DMX signal. It is important to use the correct cables when installing a DMX512 network. If you do not already have the proper cables, contact Wildfire or your local distributor. If you are building your own cables, you must use proper shielding and grounding techniques to ensure proper operation and safety. The failure to follow the correct shielding and grounding techniques could damage the fixture. We suggest following the "Recommended Practice for DMX512" available through the USITT. 5
6 WF-EM2R & WF-EM4R: Two and four foot remote control units The remote control units can only function when connected to the Music Interface Module (model WF-EMMIM). The units themselves have no functionality without the Music Interface Module connected. The two connectors marked "Remote In" and "Remote Out" Allow for connection to the Music Interface Module, as well as daisy chaining multiple units together. WF-EMMIM: Music Interface Module The Music Interface Module is designed to be connected the Remote Effects Master series models WF-EM2R & WF-EM4R only for controlling all of the standard Effects Master functions as well as additional music interface and contact closure options Master Selection Switch - This switch allows for the selection of the units to respond to music or to operate as a manual unit. 1. LO - Selecting "LO" allows the unit to respond to low frequencies in the music, such as bass tones. 2. MID - Selecting "MID" allows the unit to respond to mid range frequencies in the music, such as vocals. 3. HIGH - Selecting "HIGH" allows the unit to respond to high frequencies in the music, such as the high hat, cymbal. 4. Manual - Selecting "Manual" allows the unit s features to be controlled manually via the set of controls in line with the "Manual" indicator. Mode Selection Switch- This switch is used to select the mode of operation. There are three modes of operation: 1. FLASH - Selecting the "FLASH" mode allows the unit to flash the lamp(s) at a 50% duty cycle; in other words, the lamp will be "off" and "on" for equal periods of time. The speed of flash is adjustable using the "Rate" slider. 2. STROBE - Selecting the "STROBE" mode allows for a fixed amount of lamp on time while the amount of off time is adjustable. The speed of the strobe is adjustable using the "Rate" knob. 3. ON - Selecting "ON" allows for steady on operation of the lamp(s) per the setting of the "Lamp Select" switch. Lamp Selection Switch- This switch allows the user to select which lamp is to be controlled. There are three selection options: 1. SINGLE - Allows one lamp to work per the setting of the "Mode" switch. 2. ALT - Allows the two lamps to alternate their on times when the "Mode" switch is set to either "Flash" or "Strobe" mode. If the mode switch is set to "ON", then the lamp that is not on in the "Single" position will be on. When in "Flash" or "Strobe" mode, the "Rate" slider determines the speed at which the lamps alternate between each other. 3. DUAL - Allows both lamps to work together per the setting of the "Mode" switch. Output Selection Switch - This switch allows to "Pause" or "Run" the output. "Pause" shuts off the units connected to the remote control box but allows the blue "Output" indicator LED on the control box to remain functioning. This allows the operator to set the control box for the desired effect without the units responding. When the desired effect is reached, the "Output Select" can to set to "Run" allowing the units to function per the settings on the control box. Rate Control Slider - This control allows for the adjustment of rate for the "Flash" and "Strobe" modes. Adjusting this slider will enable the user to set the "Flash", "Strobe" and "Alternate" rates to achieve the desired effects. Background Control Slider- This slider control has a dual function. First, it allows for dimming the units when the "Master Selector" is set to "Manual" regardless of how the "Lamp Select" or "Mode Select" switches are set. Second, it allows for the setting of an always-present intensity level when operating in music mode. If the operator wants the units to pulse to the beat of music without the lamps turning completely off during the lack of music, he can set the "Background" control for a dim light output level. Level Control Slider- This slide control allows for adjustment of sensitivity to the music. The bottom of the slider is less sensitive while the top is more sensitive. For example if the operator wants the units to respond to only strong beats or pulses in the music, then this control would be set toward the bottom. 6
7 Maintenance & Troubleshooting Lamp Replacement Refer to Fixtures Specifications on page 4 for information on selecting the proper replacement lamp for your fixture. Unplug the fixture. If this is not possible then steps should be taken that would allow the fixture to remain in an off state while re-lamping. If your Effects Master is equipped with The UVT protective lens option, this will need to be removed first before replacing the lamps. To remove the protective lens, first determine which end is easiest to slide the lens from the unit. Looking at that end, locate the two Phillips screws that hold the lensretaining bracket to the side of the fixture. Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the two screws that hold the bracket in place. (Do Not Remove the Screws). Once the two screws are loose, the bracket will slide out from under the screw heads. Now that the bracket is removed, slide the protective lens out of the housing. Holding the lamp firmly with two hands, one hand near each end of the lamp, rotate the lamp about its long center-line axis, one quarter (1/4) turn either clockwise or counter-clockwise. The sockets will click and the lamp will become loose. Gently lift the lamp free of the sockets. Install the new lamp by lining up the two pins on the ends of the lamp so that they will slide into the open slot in the lamp holder. Gently set the lamp into the sockets until the lamp pins rest on the lamp socket. Gently turn the lamp one-quarter (1/4) turn either clockwise or counter-clockwise, until the lamp socket makes a small click or you feel a detent position. Gently lift up on the lamp to make sure that both ends of the lamp are installed correctly, neither end of the lamp should move in the socket. Cleaning For best performance, the reflector, lamps and protective lens should be kept free of dirt and dust. At no time should any cleaning chemicals or abrasives be used to clean any part of the unit. For normal cleaning, a dry soft cloth should be used to wipe any surface free from dust and light dirt. Cleaning the reflector will require that the lamps be removed. Remove lamps by following the instructions listed under Lamp Replacement above. Always unplug the unit before cleaning. Once the lamps have been removed, gently wipe off the reflector using a soft dry cloth. In the event the reflector is heavily soiled, lightly dampen the cloth with a mild window cleaning agent and wipe. Lamps should be cleaned using the same method; first use a dry soft cloth and then proceed with a window-cleaning agent if lamp is too heavily soiled. Do not spray or apply any liquid directly to any part of the fixture. Troubleshooting Do not open the unit s case. Doing so will void the warranty and expose lethal voltages that could result in serious injury or death Other than the lamps, there are no user serviceable parts in the fixture. If the unit will not flash or strobe, place the mode switch in the "ON" position (Manual Unit) or push DMX512 control slider to "Max" (DMX Unit). If unit still does not light, check unit has power and functioning lamps. If unit still does not function, check for good grounding to the AC power outlet. The unit will not function or will function poorly if it has a poor ground connection. Two prong outlets will not work. Be completely sure that the outlet is grounded and that it is truly connected at the outlet and throughout the building wiring. A qualified maintenance person should check for proper grounding to avoid risk of electric shock. Poor grounding can lead to many problems down the road, such as intermittent behavior. 7
