4 Hazardous conditions; extreme caution. Extreme cau+on in the opera+on of a commercial motor vehicle shall be exercised when hazardous condi+ons, such as those caused by snow, ice, sleet, fog, mist, rain, dust, or smoke, adversely affect visibility or trac+on. Speed shall be reduced when such condi+ons exist. If condi+ons become sufficiently dangerous, the opera+on of the commercial motor vehicle shall be discon+nued and shall not be resumed un+l the commercial motor vehicle can be safely operated. Whenever compliance with the foregoing provisions of this rule increases hazard to passengers, the commercial motor vehicle may be operated to the nearest point at which the safety of passengers is assured.

16 JACKKNIFING When the drive wheels lose traction, they cause the tractor-trailer to skid. This skid can result in a jackknife. Be careful not to make things worse by putting on the brakes or adding power in a skid. Skidding and Jackknifing Causes! Overacceleration! Overbreaking LOSS OF TRACTION! Oversteering! Speed too fast for conditions = JACKKNIFE

17 2.3.4 Retarders Some vehicles have "retarders." Retarders help slow a vehicle, reducing the need for using your brakes. They reduce brake wear and give you another way to slow down. There are four basic types of retarders (exhaust, engine, hydraulic, and electric). All retarders can be turned on or off by the driver. on some vehicles the retarding power can be adjusted. When turned "on," retarders apply their braking power (to the drive wheels only) whenever you let up on the accelerator pedal all the way. Because these devices can be noisy, be sure you know where their use is permized. Cau+on. When your drive wheels have poor trac+on, the retarder may cause them to skid. Therefore, you should turn the retarder off whenever the road is wet, icy, or snow covered.
