1 West Metro Fire Protection District Developing Firefighter Instructions The following is an outline of what you are to achieve in relation to a Brush Truck (Type 6). You may or may not be assigned to a station during your rotations that has a brush truck; if not, then please arrange a time with your officer and district chief to get there. This task book can be completed at the same time as the other task books. during your assignment to an Engine Company. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure the tasks are completed. 2 Task #1 A. Meet with your Evaluating Officer and get his/her expectations of you. B. Discuss your task book with them come up with a game plan to complete the tasks. Page 2 of 12
3 Task #2 Meet with the Engineer and demonstrate ability to ensure vehicle stays in proper working order. 1. Daily/Weekly Check-Off Sheet 2. Lights check 3. Troubleshooting Demonstrate the ability to perform a vehicle inspection to ensure vehicle is safe for travel. 1. Discuss the pre and post vehicle inspection process while at an incident. 2. Explain the concept of noxious weed abatement following an incident and describe how it s performed. Page 3 of 12
4 Task #3 After taking some time to look at a Brush Truck, locate at least five items as requested by your Officer Be able to describe the use of every tool, adapter, fitting and appliance found on the brush truck. Page 4 of 12
5 Task #4 Locate and describe the entire hose compliment: feet pre-connect weeping hose reel Reeltex hose with field repairable couplings to 25 bumper line with separate shut-off at front supply line 5. 2 BLUE hose packs with BLACK hose pack with 100ft 1 inch and ft of 1.5 hose 8. Mop-up packs with 200 garden hose 9. Different size hard suction hoses for pump and Portable pumps Page 5 of 12
6 Task #5 Demonstrate safe and effective driving. 1. Observe traffic laws 2. Verbalize proper emergent driving skills 3. Match vehicle speed for conditions 4. Awareness of vehicle height and weight 5. Awareness of Brake Fade 6. Demonstrate good situational awareness and defensive driving techniques. Discuss with and demonstrate to your Officer your knowledge of cab controls and gauges: 1. VHF and 800 MHz radios 2. Emergency lights and sirens 3. All dash gauges 4. Go light (B9 and B11 only) 5. Winch controls Page 6 of 12
7 Task #6 Demonstrate safe and effective off-road driving during a training session with your Officer. Demonstrate and/or verbalize knowledge with the following: 1. Verbalize off-road considerations 2. Demonstrate placing apparatus into 4-wheel drive mode 3. Demonstrate safe side-slope driving and describe methods to avoid rolling the truck. 4. Explain angle of approach and departure 5. Verbalize long wheel base considerations 6. Demonstrate method(s) of removing wedged debris between duals 7. Explain traction and momentum concepts 8. Explain why to park in the black or cut line around the truck 9. Explain why to avoid parking on hot ash 10. Explain Bridge Load Limits and methods of determining strength of un-marked bridges a. Risk benefit analysis; If bridge load cannot be assured, choose another route 11. Explain the need to park for escape Page 7 of 12
8 Task #7 Describe mobile attack on fire and explain all crew responsibilities and tactics to include: 1. Driving practices during mobile attack 2. Windows up 3. Emergency lights on 4. Drive in black 5. Have a communication method with nozzle operator 6. Explain dangers of using this tactic 7. Explain when this tactic is not appropriate 8. Describe pump operations during mobile attack 9. Explain how angle of truck affects pumping 10. Explain spray bar use and limitations Page 8 of 12
9 Task #8 Discuss and practice with your Officer how to draft with vehicle pumps and portable pumps: 1. The truck/portable pump is positioned properly 2. The hard-suction hose and strainer are properly assembled 3. The strainer is properly positioned. 4. All drains and valves are closed, and all unused openings are capped tightly 5. The pump is primed in less than 30 seconds 6. The hose line is flowed for 5 minutes 7. The pumping operation is shut down safely 8. The truck/portable pump is placed back in service 9. Explain how elevation affects drafting Page 9 of 12
10 Task #9 Have your Officer show you the foam operating system to include: 1. Explain foam system components 2. Describe recommended foam settings 3. Explain use of foam nozzles 4. Problem with flow when using Mop-Up nozzles 5. Foam solution should not be pumped back into water tank 6. Troubleshooting foam system 7. Describe what happens if the re circulator is left open with the foam Blizzard Wizard (or other) foam system on 8. Show how to drain concentrate tank 9. Describe batch mixing using correct calculations 10. Mixing different brands should be avoided Always flush plumbing afterwards Page 10 of 12
11 Task #10 Demonstrate proper method of preparing pump and plumbing for freezing weather conditions. 1. Drain all plumbing 2. Place all valves at ½ open position 3. Remove all discharge caps 4. Drain water tank to below the level of the tank to pump line 5. Describe how to drain the plumbing to the front of the truck and the hose reel. Page 11 of 12
