More and more contractors are considering spraying brine solutions, rather than spreading, for winter maintenance applications. And SnowEx is ahead of the curve by introducing a complete line of innovative de-icing sprayers. 23 HOW TO CHOOSE BRINE There are several manufacturers of brine solutions, each offering multiple formulas. Many solutions claim to be universal, but there are others that are only ideal for specific uses, such as pre-wetting material. Check with the manufacturer for more details. EUTECTIC POINT. Each solution should list a eutectic point in its specs meaning the lowest temperature it can endure before freezing. Bear in mind that already present precipitation can water down the brine solution effectively raising its eutectic point. LOCATION. Some brine solutions are easily tracked into buildings by pedestrian traffic where they can create indoor slip-and-fall hazards. If maintaining sidewalks, entryways or storefronts, be mindful of the ideal solutions for these areas. CORROSION. Many brine solutions on the market contain some sort of corrosion inhibitor or are nonchloride based to limit vehicle damage or other steel structures/ reinforcements. ENVIRONMENT. Organically based materials are designed to limit environmental impact. These are particularly useful when addressing areas in close proximity to vegetation, such as sidewalks, trails and residential applications. Non-chloride solutions also reduce vegetation damage.
