1 Wolverton Carriage and Wagon s List Main Series WOLV 3/ Description: These drawings span LNWR, LMS and BR periods and cover a vast range of subjects. These are differentiated from early locomotive drawings because they are of different format, follow different numbering systems and relate to carriages, whilst earlier drawings relate to engines and related equipment. Some are not technical drawings but copies of letters, charts and other information that has been transferred onto waxed. System of Arrangement: s are not currently arranged in any clear order. s have been mixed up during the transfer from Wolverton to the National Railway Museum and in subsequent moves, as there are still drawings waiting to be processed it is not yet possible to arrange them in any logical order. See Design sub fonds description on the Wolverton Archive List for more information on drawing numbers. s can however be interpreted using their drawing number, drawings follow several different numbering systems demonstrated in drawing registers (WOLV 3/4) The numbering system designed by Works Superintendent C.A. Park This was a system that ran sequentially from the number one onwards, with each drawing produced being given the next number in the register. This system did not use codes/prefixes to differentiate size of drawings. In 9 a new numbering system was introduced by Works Superintendent Henry Earl. numbers are prefixed with a number -8 that indicates the size of the drawing. These range from -8 and indicate the sizes as follows. - 53" x 30" - 40" x 7" 3-7" x 0" 4-0" x 3 /" 5-3 /" x 0" 6-3 /" x 8" 7-8" x any length 8 - s of odd sizes The main drawing number began at one again and the numbers increased sequentially. In the 960s drawing numbers start to begin with a combination of WN (Wolverton), DE (Derby) and SC (Standard Carriage) but maintain the Earl system of sizing. After this a new system of sizing was introduced that did not use prefixes, instead certain number ranges related to certain sizes, an example is shown below. At present drawings are stored in what appears to be a number of systems, rolls relating to size, sometimes in numerical order and sometimes in themes. Layout of Office (WOLV 3// W3/33) dated 944 shows where members of staff sit and where drawings are stored. This gives an indication of original order; it shows separate cabinets for ambulance train drawings, royal drawings, container drawings, road vehicle drawings, non corridor stock drawings, Euston drawings, underframe drawings, sleeping saloons, government drawings and sections named by members of staff, it also shows drawings arranged in size (prefixed -8 to show size representing the Henry Earl drawing system); drawings from an earlier system designed by Park where there were new prefixed numbers. s were originally stored flat but have been rolled for storage purposes after their transfer from Wolverton. Physical Characteristics: s have been given a condition rating -4. Good- generally good condition, few marks or tears, generally in tact, reasonable dirt coverage. Fair- some light damage, tears and markings but still comprehensible/legible 3. Poor- Heavy accumulation of dirt, large rips or tears, some areas illegible 4.
