Engine cooling: Parts and consumables for the repair work CONSUMABLES Use GLACEOL RX (TYPE D) coolant. Ready-to-use coolant or antifreeze must be diluted with distilled water in accordance with the guidelines marked on the container. -1
Engine cooling: Precautions for repair When a faulty vehicle arrives, check: IMPORTANT The circuits are designed to be pressurized; take care at high temperatures (risk of serious burns), Never remove the valve from the expansion bottle while the engine is hot. Similarly, take care when working under the bonnet, as the radiator fan(s) may start up unexpectedly. Do not open the bleed valve(s) while the engine is running. The coolant helps to keep the engine running properly (heat exchange). The system does not operate using pure water. Drain the oil when the engine is warm. Flushing and refilling should be carried out with a warm or cold engine. Never flush a hot engine (risk of serious thermal shock). When carrying out a repair that requires a complete circuit drain, it is essential to flush the circuit with clean water, blow compressed air through the circuit to eliminate water, fill and drain the circuit and then measure the effective protection. -the condition and tension of the water pump drive belt, - that the fan, the radiator and the radiator grille are not obstructed by an object which may impede the flow of air. Vehicles in the current range have cooling circuits with the following basic characteristics: - Pressurized sealed circuit (expansion bottle valve), Summary of expansion bottle valve ratings. Expansion bottle valve with: a brown circle: 1.2 bar a blue circle: 1.4 bar a yellow hand: 1.4 bar a white hand: 1.6 bar a grey hand: 1.8 bar - circuit using only type «D» coolant. Ready-to-use coolant or antifreeze must be diluted with distilled water in accordance with the guidelines marked on the container. The parameters to be observed are: - Protection down to - 25 C ± 2 for cold and temperate climates, - Protection down to - 40 C ± 2 for very cold climates. Refer to the vehicle's maintenance service booklet for information on cooling circuit service intervals. For any further information, refer to the Workshop Repair Manual of the vehicle concerned. -2
Engine cooling circuit: check Special tooling required Mot Cooling circuit filling and diagnostic tool I - RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REPAIR IMPORTANT The circuits are designed to be pressurized; take care at high temperatures (risk of serious burns). Never remove the valve from the expansion bottle while the engine is hot. Similarly, take care when working under the bonnet, as the radiator fan(s) may start up unexpectedly. Do not open the bleed valve(s) while the engine is running. II - CHECKING THE CIRCUIT SEALING The expansion bottle valve must be replaced if coolant is leaking from the valve. -3
Engine cooling circuit: check Checking the cooling circuit and the expansion bottle valve Check the cooling circuit and the expansion bottle valve using the cooling circuit diagnostic and filling tool (Mot. 1700). For guidance on the use of this tool see TN 3857A, How to use the cooling circuit diagnostic and filling tool For any further information, refer to the Workshop Repair Manual of the vehicle concerned. -4
Cooling circuit: Draining - Refilling Car Mot Mot Mot Mot Special tooling required Trim removal lever Clip pliers for hose clips (large model) Clip pliers for hose clips (small model) Remote operation pliers for cooling system hose clips Cooling circuit filling and diagnostic tool When carrying out a repair that requires a complete circuit drain, it is essential to flush the circuit with clean water, blow compressed air through the circuit to eliminate water, fill and drain the circuit and then measure the effective protection. The parameters to be observed are: - Protection down to - 25 C ± 2 for cold and temperate climates, - Protection down to - 40 C ± 2 for very cold climates. IMPORTANT The circuits are designed to be pressurized; take care at high temperatures (risk of serious burns). Never remove the valve from the expansion bottle while the engine is hot. Similarly, take care when working under the bonnet, as the radiator fan(s) may start up unexpectedly. Do not open the bleed valve(s) while the engine is running. Before doing any work, protect electrical equipment using plastic bags. The engine must be switched off and the air conditioning system deactivated to prevent the engine cooling fans operating as soon as the engine is started. The coolant helps to keep the engine running properly (heat exchange). The system does not operate using pure water. DRAINING Use the following tools: - (Car. 1363), - (Mot ), - (Mot ), Drain the oil when the engine is warm. Cleaning and refilling should be carried out with a warm or cold engine. Never flush a hot engine (risk of serious thermal shock). - (Mot. 1448). Remove the expansion bottle valve. Open the cooling circuit at the cooling radiator bottom hose using (Car. 1363). Blow compressed air into the circuit through the expansion bottle valve aperture to remove as much liquid as possible. CLEANING For flushing (see, Cooling system, Engine cooling circuit: Cleaning, page -7). FILLING Use GLACEOL RX (TYPE D) coolant. -5
Cooling circuit: Draining - Refilling Refill the cooling circuit using the cooling circuit diagnostic and filling tool (Mot. 1700). For guidance on the use of this tool see TN 3857A, How to use the cooling circuit diagnostic and filling tool. Fill up the expansion bottle until the coolant overflows. Refit the expansion bottle valve. Bleed the circuit (see, Cooling system, Cooling circuit: Bleeding, page -8). -6
Engine cooling circuit: Cleaning IMPORTANT The circuits are designed to be pressurized; take care at high temperatures (risk of serious burns). Never remove the valve from the expansion bottle while the engine is hot. Similarly, take care when working under the bonnet, as the radiator fan(s) may start up unexpectedly. Do not open the bleed valve(s) while the engine is running. Drain the oil when the engine is warm. Cleaning and refilling should be carried out with a warm or cold engine. Never flush a hot engine (risk of serious thermal shock). CLEANING THE COOLING CIRCUIT To flush the cooling circuit, fill with water via the expansion bottle. In some cases it will be necessary to disconnect the radiator top hose to correctly flush the engine cooling radiator. Blow compressed air into the circuit through the expansion bottle valve orifice to remove as much water as possible. Connect the top and bottom hoses. -7
Cooling circuit: Bleeding pedal press Equipment required IMPORTANT The circuits are designed to be pressurized; take care at high temperatures (risk of serious burns), Never remove the valve from the expansion bottle while the engine is hot. Similarly, take care when working under the bonnet, as the radiator fan(s) may start up unexpectedly. Do not open the bleed valve(s) while the engine is running. BLEEDING Use tool pedal press. Start the engine. Degas the cooling circuit in accordance with the procedure described in the vehicle's Workshop Repair Manual. Check that the heating is operating correctly. Allow the engine to cool until the coolant temperature is less than 50 C. Top up the coolant level in the expansion bottle if necessary. -8
