6 Function and Principle Site Suitability Placement opportunities are determined by an assessment of the site determining soil conditions and suitability for installation. Full details are available in Appendix: Drainage Trench Construction Guidelines. System Design, for cabins and homes in rural locations, is a compact grey water filtration system consisting of an integrated sludge chamber, pump, bio filter and clearance chamber built into the same tank. The tanks design consists of a top compartment containing a bio filter and a lower compartment containing a sludge chamber, pump sump and a clearance chamber. Waste water is led by gravity from the cabin/house to the sludge chamber where solid particles are retained. The remaining waste water flows through the sludge chamber to a time controlled pump. The pump then pumps waste water in short bursts through the bio filter by means of a control system. The waste water is disbursed through spray nozzles over the surface of the filter mass. The water flows by gravity through the filter mass and a clearing chamber and is discharged from the tank. The combination of pre-treatment in the sludge chamber, even distribution through spray nozzles, permeation of the filter mass in the bio filter and flow through the clearance chamber causes the organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen and pathogenic organisms to be withheld in the treatment plant. The pump is connected to a control cabinet located inside the tank. The control cabinet is connected to 230V (2 x 2.5mm² + PE) supply inside the cabin/house. A clamp to secure an alarm sensor for high water level is included. An alarm sensor is built in and can be connected to a variety of alarm types. (A) Level Sensor, Complete - provides a high water signal to an - Alarm (optional - not included in delivery) (B) Control Cabinet - supplies power from the power outlet to the - Heating Cable - Pump (C) Power Supply (indoors) 2 5

7 (A) Main Hatch (B) Inspection Hatch (C) Control Cabinet A02 (D) Level Sensor, Complete (E) Pump (F) Clearing Chamber (G) Flushing Hose, Complete (H) Heating Cable Easy to Install Enclosing the entire system in one tank results in a small and compact plant, with minimal requirement for site excavation. The treatment plant is delivered ready for installation in the constructed pit. Installation is limited to connection of the inlet and outlet pipes and connection of the electrical supply. This ensures fast and easy installation. Application - Grey Water Treatment The treatment plant is designed to process grey water and is not designed to process black water/effluent from toilets. Note that cabin/household pipes must be check prior to installation to ensure that they transport only grey water to the treatment plant. Application - What is Grey Water? The term grey water refers to household wastewater that is collected from showers, sinks, dishwashing and laundries. Wastewater from toilets and urinals is not defined as grey water. Grey water is not to contain solvents, paint or high concentrations of detergents. In addition, normal grey water production does not contain discharge from whirlpools, swimming pools and/or hot tubs. Supply from sources other than those that the plant is designed for will result in reduced treatment and can lead to system failure. Instructions for Use Oil and Fat: Cooking oil, fat, and grease (all types) should not be processed in the grey water tank. Fat, oil and grease can lead to blockages in piping, odors and reduced function of drainage systems. It is recommended that fats be collected in a container and disposed of thoughtfully with solid waste (i.e. household rubbish). Outlet Devices/Drainage Trench Assuming that treatment plant has been installed and maintained according to the manufacturers instructions, the plant will not cause an unacceptable risk in the spread of gastrointestinal infections. The drainage trench with soil filtration can be constructed to within 30m of a well/ water source. See Appendix: Drainage Trench Construction Guidelines. No Use of Chemicals All treatment plant filtration consists of expanded lightweight clay aggregate. No chemicals are used. Cold Climate Site Locations is designed with cold climate site locations in mind. The treatment plant has a built in heating cable ensuring function of the tank in frost/freezing conditions. It is important to leave the electrical supply turned ON when leaving the cabin/household in such conditions, in order for the heating cable to prevent freezing in the tank. 9.9 Warning DO NOT disconnect power when leaving the cabin. 3 6

It is recommended that the control cabinet be removed from the treatment plant during sludge disposal and placed to the side of the service hatch. To empty the sludge, position the emptying hose down in the left corner of the service hatch and down into the sludge chamber. Feed the hose in and around the chamber until it meets the partition wall inside the chamber (on the right side of the service hatch). If the emptying hose cannot be fed around the chamber, use flushing equipment to flush the sludge towards the emptying hose. The chamber is approximately 5 meters in length. During emptying, take precaution not to dislodge or damage cables, the control cabinet and the pump located within the service hatch. Note: See emptying the Clearing Chamber. (A) Service Hatch - Access for sludge removal. 9 12

14 Emptying the Clearing Chamber At the time of sludge removal, it is also necessary for the sludge removal company to remove the contents of the Grey Water Treatment Plant, Ecomotive A02 clearing chamber (C). The clearing chambers recommended emptying interval is the same as that for sludge removal. Access to the clearing chamber (C) is through the main hatch on the treatment plant (B). Position the emptying hose into the central section. Feed the hose directly downwards. Note that there is an internal hose within the clearing chamber (D). Position the sludge removal hose so as to ensure that the internal hose (D) in the clearing chamber is not sucked into the sludge removal hose during waste removal. (B) Main Hatch - Access for the Clearing Chamber (C) Clearing Chamber (D) Internal Hose Alarm High water levels in the treatment plant may be caused by the following factors. If an alarm has been fitted to the level sensor, and the alarm indicates, it is recommended to refer to the troubleshooting guidelines. The supply of grey water exceeds the treatment plants capacity. That the spray nozzles are blocked. Malfunction of the pump. Disassembly Instructions Disassembly and reassembly of the tank components is required during routine periodic maintenance. See document appendices for detailed step by step information regarding maintenance routines. Appendix: Service and Maintenance - Spray Nozzle Cleaning/Replacement Appendix: Service and Maintenance - Pump Maintenance 10 13

Once per year (annually). Each five years. Troubleshooting Replace the filter in the pump assembly. Loosen the filter mass in the tank. Control check and clean/replace the nozzles on the Flushing Hose, Complete. For residential houses only: Sludge removal. For cabins/recreational houses only: Sludge removal. See appendices for further information. Insert a rake (or similar) into the top of the filter mass and turn the surface of the filter mass to loosen it. This allows the grey water to drain through the bio-filter. See appendices for further information. Problem Cause Action The tank does not operate. Power has been disconnected. Re-connect the power to the treatment plant. Check that power is connected to the outlet. If the power is on, check the fuse box and/or contact a licensed electrician. Water rises above the filter mass in the top section of the tank. Level sensor is activated (i.e. alarm indicates) - Water level is rising and not draining from the tank. The filter mass is obstructing flow (blocked). Control Cabinet is OFF. The nozzles are blocked. The pump does not start. More grey water is entering the system than it is dimensioned for. Outlet pipe is blocked. Insert a rake (or similar) into the top of the filter mass and turn the surface of the filter mass to loosen it. This allows the grey water to drain through the bio-filter. Check the control cabinet under the inspection hatch to ensure it is turned to "ON" position. Clean or replace the spray nozzles. For further information, see Appendix: Service and Maintenance - Spray Nozzle Cleaning/Replacement. Carry out the Start Up Procedures in this document to check the function. 20 Appendix: Drainage Trench Construction Guidelines Construction of the Drainage Trench This guide is designed to aid in assessment of the local soil conditions in order to establish placement opportunities for a Grey Water Treatment Plant, Ecomotive A02 tank and drainage trench. The outlet drainage trench is the final step in a complete filtration process, therefore it is important that these instructions are followed carefully. The study results can in turn be used in an application for a discharge permit for the treatment plant. It is therefore recommended that the location of the treatment plant with discharge trench be plotted on maps and survey results recorded. Step 1: Location of the Drainage Trench and Control of Safe Distances to Drinking Water Sources 1. Begin by selecting a location for the drainage trench where you have reason to believe that there is terrain based on gravel of a reasonable depth and width. 2. Ensure that the proposed position of the drainage trench is a minimum of 30 meters upstream from any drinking water sources. 3. Refer to principles for placement in figure 5 and figure Check local regulations determining distances allowable between the drainage trench and a neighbors boundary. Jets Vacuum AS recommend a minimum of 4 meters to meet general established regulations in a number of countries. Step 2: Check the Minimum Distance to Bedrock/Groundwater 1. Use a crowbar or similar pressed into the ground surface to asses depth to bedrock and/or ground water. Carry out this check at intervals along the length of the proposed site. 2. If bedrock or groundwater is found with 45cm from the surface, the location is unsuitable for the discharge trench. Another suitable location on the site must be located. 3. If neither bedrock or ground water are found within 45cm from the surface continue to step 3. Step 3: Measuring the Soil Conductivity (K - value) K - value is a measure of how quickly water can be transported in the soil at the site. This value can be measured using an infiltration test kit. Jets Vacuum AS supplies a test kit specifically design by Ecomotive AS for this purpose. Contact Jets Vacuum AS or your local supplier for further information. 1. Dig a square test pit (25 cm x 25 cm), down to 30 cm depth from the ground surface at the planned position of the discharge trench (Figure 1). Figure 1: Explanation of a sample pit for filtration testing with placement of test sponge 1 and test sponge 2 from the test kit. (A) Test Kit Sponge - Part 1 (B) Test Kit Sponge - Part 2 2. Insert the "Test Kit Sponge - Part 2" (no hole in the center) into the base of the test pit. Ensure that the sponge fits securely (fills the pit snugly to the sides) and is located on the bottom surface of the pit. There are not be gaps between the bottom/sides of the pit and the sponge. Position the "Test Kit Sponge - Part 1" (with a hole in the center) on top of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 2". Ensure that there are no gaps between the sides of the pit and the sponge and that there is no gap between the two sponges. 3. Fill water gradually into the center of the test kit to the top level of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 1". Maintain the water level at the top of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 1" for a period of at least 30 minutes by adding water as necessary. 4. After 30 minutes with water level maintained to the top of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 1", record the time taken (in minutes) for which it takes for the water level to reduce (drain) from the top of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 1" to the upper edge of "Test Kit Sponge - Part 2". The K-value (m/d) is provided according to the chart provided (Figure 2). 1 19

21 Figure 2: K-value readings based on drainage time in the test pit. (A) K-value Reading (m/d) (B) Recorded drainage time (in minutes) Step 4: Drainage Trench Dimensions 1. Terrain Slope Calculate the slope of the terrain over a minimum distance of 50 meters as per the example provided (Figure 3). If there is no map with contour intervals* available (1 meter intervals) slope must be measured in the actual site area. Use the value along with the K-value gained when measuring soil conductivity (Figure 2) in order to gain the required trench length in meters (see Figure 4). Figure 3: Example of measurement and calculation of the terrain slope. In this example, the terrain falls 10m over a 50 meter distance. Thus the slope calculation is: 10/50 = 0.2 * Contour: the distance measure of "curve of the land" showing the difference in height on a map. Figure 4: Dimension Calculation of the Drainage Trench based on K-value and terrain slope. (A) Terrain Slope (m/m) Reading - see Drainage Trench Dimensions - step 4. (B) Measured K-value (m/d) Reading - see Measuring the Soil Conductivity (K-value) - step

22 2. Drainage Trench with Filtration The areas between the curves in Figure 4, are referred to as fields. If the values of terrain slope and K - value intersect in field 1 in Figure 4, a 10 meter drainage trench can be constructed for filtration of the grey water from the grey water treatment plant. If the values intersect in field 2 a 15 meter drainage trench can be constructed and so forth. For construction of the drainage trench with filtration, see Figure 5 (Site Plan: Drainage Trench with Filtration) and Figure 6 (Section Plan: Drainage Trench with Filtration). 3. Filtration Trench with a Drainage Outlet If the values of terrain slope and K - value intersect in box 5 in Figure 4, it is necessary to construct a trench with filtered grey water being led away via drainage to a farm drainage, creek, dyke, marsh, canal, or equivalent, after has passed through the sand layer in the drainage trench. The minimum trench length for a trench with drainage outlet as described is 10 meters. For construction of the trench with a drainage outlet, see Figure 7 (Site Plan: Drainage Trench with a Drainage Outlet) and Figure 8 (Section Plan: Drainage Trench with a Drainage Outlet). Note: A drainage trench with an outlet can also be established where conditions are condusive to filtration, but only if at the available site location, it is impossible to establish a filtration trench. Drainage of outlet water from such an installation must not cause problems at the site. 24 Appendix: Overload Effect Information Overload Effect Information - for Cabins Only A drainage trench system in use for short periods of time (i.e. private cabins) is able to cope with short-term increased load corresponding to an occupancy of 12 persons/beds. The curve below shows the treatment effect of the plant as a percentage as determined by the number of beds/occupancy. (A) Treatment Effect (%) (B) Number of beds/occupancy As the graph shows, the filtration effect is dramatically reduced with use over 12 persons/simultaneous occupancy over 12. For use over 12 persons, multiple 's must be installed. Drainage Trench: Measures to mitigate the increased effluent resulting from maximum load (between 9 and 12 persons/simultaneous occupancy) requires building a larger outlet trench with a drainage trench whereby the bottom of the trench is increased to 1 meter wide, and the trench length is increased to 15 meters. For construction of the drainage trench refer to Drainage Trench Construction Guidelines (Drainage Trench with a Drainage Outlet). In cases where the plant is subjected to repeated overload over a period of one year, it is to be expected that increased demand for service and maintenance will be necessary for the plant to function properly. 1 23

25 Appendix: Grey Water Purification Why purify grey water? The term grey water refers to waste water from showers, sinks, dishwashers and laundry facilities produced under normal household conditions. It does not include effluent from toilets. Grey water forms the largest volume of waste water from a household; however, it contains the least amount of contamination. Pollutants and disease-causing organisms are found mainly in toilet effluent. By separating grey water and black water (effluent from toilets), it is possible to purify grey water to a quality that eliminates the danger of an unacceptable risk of infection or contamination when released in nature. Discharging Grey Water versus Black Water Risks of Infection Most pathogenic organisms that cause gastro-intestinal infections are excreted in feces from infected persons. By separating black water from other waste water (grey water) the amount of pathogenic organisms is reduced in the grey water. It is estimated that only a very small proportion of pathogenic organisms are released into grey water during hand washing, showering, etc. The gastro-intestinal infections with the highest frequency in the population are most likely spread by discharge of effluent. Some viral infections are very common in the general population. In addition, Campylobacter infections are also relatively frequent. The various disease-causing organisms are excreted in different concentrations. EHEC-infected persons (a dangerous form of E. coli) produce separate bacterial cells per. gram of feces, while Rotavirus infection can produce up to 100 billion viruses per gram of feces. Another important factor when assessing the risk of infection is the infectious dose. It is to be expected with Salmonella bacteria that the bacteria must be consumed in relatively large quantities (> ) to provide a 50% chance of infection. Some viruses have a low infectious dose. Rotavirus provides a similar 50% chance of infection even at an intake level of 6 viral particles. Assuming that is installed and maintained according to manufacturers instructions, the plant will not cause unacceptable risks in the spread of gastrointestinal infections. For further information regarding drainage trench construction refer to Appendix: Drainage Trench Construction Guidelines. 9.2 Danger Disease Hazards: Effluent is a common mode of transmission for parasitic organisms. Some of these may be pathogenic, meaning that they may have the capability of causing serious communicable disease. Good personal hygiene, use of disinfectant soap and avoidance of hand to mouth transfer are necessary for all working in contact with the equipment. Skin abrasions, punctures or wounds of any other nature require immediate and proper medical attention. What is a waste free toilet? When black water is collected in for example, a septic tank, and is not thereafter released into nature, it is said that this is a waste-free toilet. The illustration (Figure 1.) shows the total purification factor by combining the treatment of grey water with black water collection in a septic tank. The bars show the degree of purification. in Combination with a Waste Free Toilet Figure 1. (A) Degree of Purification (%) (B) Degree of Purification Degree of Purification 1) Theoretically calculated on the basis of test results from the Grey Water Treatment Plant, Ecomotive A02 and the estimated concentration in raw sewage mixed: Tot P = 12mg P/L, BOD5 = 300 mg O2 /L, SS = 220mg/L 2) Based on measured amounts of fecal contamination in the grey water and including the effect of the drainage trench. In addition, there will be retention and inactivation during transport away from the drainage trench and dilution. This is not taken into account. 1 24
