4 SAFETY WARNING OPERATOR SAFETY DANGER TRIMMER USERS RISK INJURY TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS IF THE TRIMMER IS USED IMPROPERLY, AND/OR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED. PROPER CLOTHING AND SAFETY GEAR MUST BE WORN WHEN OPERATING TRIMMER. Read this Trimmer Operator s Manual carefully. Be sure you understand how to operate this unit properly before you use it. If you have any questions or problems, please contact your ECHO dealer. Start the unit on the ground with the throttle set at idle. Do not start if the blades are obstructed by the ground or any other object. Inspect area that trimmer will be used in. Remove stones, metal objects and any other object that could jam or damage the trimmer. Never allow children to use the machine. Do not allow anyone to hold the material you are cutting. Keep a firm grip on the trimmer with both hands, the right hand on the front handle, the left hand on the rear handle. Be familiar with all the controls and the proper use of the machine. Wear proper clothing to protect legs and other exposed parts of your body. Wear non-skid sole shoes. Do not wear open-toed shoes or operate unit while bare footed. Wear eye and hearing protection devices. Use caution when handling fuel. Put the caps back tightly on both the fuel can and the trimmer fuel tank. Move at least 3 m from the re-fuelling point and be sure there is no leakage of fuel from the fuel tank cap or the fuel system before starting the engine. WARNING DANGER ALWAYS STOP THE ENGINE WHEN A BLADE JAM OCCURS. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE AN OBJECT CAUSING A BLADE JAM IF THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. PHYSICAL INJURY CAN OCCUR IF A BLADE JAM IS REMOVED AND THE BLADES START MOVING. 3 m Do all cutting at full throttle speed. Cutting at less at than full speed can damage the clutch by allowing it to slip. Operate this petrol engine powered equipment in a well-ventilated area only. WARNING DANGER USE A FIRM GRIP WITH THUMBS AND FINGERS ENCIRCLING THE HANDLES. A FIRM GRIP WILL HELP YOU KEEP CONTROL OF THE TRIMMER. NEVER OPERATE THE TRIMMER ONLY ONE HAND OR BODILY INJURY CAN OCCUR. Always carry the trimmer with the engine stopped and the HOT silencer away from your body. 4

5 PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Always wear protection goggles that meet the national standards. Wear hearing protection. If you use the unit for less than two hours per day, we recommend that hearing protection be worn at all times. Dress properly! Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery, they can be caught in moving parts. Use of sturdy gloves, non-skid footwear, and safety glasses is recommended. While operating the machine be always sure of a secure position. Wear non-slip, heavy-duty work gloves to improve your grip on the trimmer handles. The gloves also help reduce the transmission of machine vibrations to your hands. PROTECTING OTHERS Spectators, children, fellow workers and animals must be warned to come no nearer than 10 m while the trimmer is in use. People working in the area near you should wear the same protective equipment as the operator. Never allow children to use the machine. Always be aware of your surroundings and stay alert for possible hazards that you may not hear due to the noise of the machine. WARNING DANGER PRECAUTION AGAINST VIBRATION AND COLD IT IS BELIEVED THAT A CONDITION CALLED RAYNAUD S PHENOMENON WHICH AFFECTS THE FINGERS OF CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS IS BROUGHT ABOUT BY EXPOSURE TO COLD AND VIBRATION. ACCORDINGLY, YOUR ECHO TRIMMER HAS SHOCK MOUNT AND RUBBERED GRIP. DESIGNED TO REDUCE THE INTENSITY OF VIBRATION TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE HANDLES. EXPOSURE TO COLD AND VIBRATION MAY CAUSE TINGLING AND BURNING, FOLLOWED BY LOSS OF COLOUR AND NUMBNESS IN A PERSON S FINGERS. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS BECAUSE THE MINIMUM EXPOSURE WHICH MIGHT TRIGGER THE AILMENT IS UNKNOWN. KEEP YOUR BODY WARM - ESPECIALLY HEAD, NECK, FEET AND ANKLES, AND HANDS AND WRISTS. MAINTAIN GOOD BLOOD CIRCULATION BY PERFORMING VIGOROUS ARM EXERCISES DURING FREQUENT WORK BREAKS, AND ALSO BY NOT SMOKING. LIMIT THE NUMBER OF HOURS OF OPERATION. TRY TO FILL A PART OF EACH WORK DAY WITH JOBS WHERE OPERATING THE TRIMMER OR OTHER HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS IS NOT REQUIRED. IF YOU EXPERIENCE DISCOMFORT, REDNESS AND SWELLING OF THE FINGERS, FOLLOWED WHITENING AND LOSS OF FEELING, CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE EXPOSING YOURSELF FURTHER TO COLD AND VIBRATION. PHYSICAL CONDITION Your judgement and dexterity may be impaired if you are ill or have taken alcohol or other substances known to affect the way you would normally function. Painful or numb fingers? See your doctor 5

6 OPERATING TECHNIQUES Before trimming, check the area and remove all obstacles and objects that could be thrown. Do not force the blades and only move as quickly as the blades will allow. Stop the engine and disconnect from ignition cable before: - cleaning or when clearing a blockage; checking, maintenance or working on the machine. Handle fuel with care; it is highly flammable. Never add fuel to a machine with a running or hot engine. Do not attempt to repair the machine unless you are qualified to do so. Do not operate the machine with a damaged or excessively worn cutting device. Plan to trim regularly to make it easier to keep neat edges and to avoid having to make more than one pass. When starting to trim, run the engine at full throttle. WARNING DANGER BEFORE TRIMMING, BE SURE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE OPERATOR S MANUAL TO AVOID THE CHANCE OF SERIOUS INJURY. Always ensure all handles and guards are fitted when using the machine. Never attempt to use an incomplete machine or one fitted with an unauthorized modification. When transporting or storing the machine always fit the blade cover. To reduce fire hazard keep engine and silencer free of debris, leaves or excessive grease. Handle blade with care, contacting with metal blades may cause injury. 6
