INTRODUCTION Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing a Durham Geo-Slope Indicator Composite Sampler. By following the setup, operating, and maintenance procedures, you can enjoy a lifetime of use. The TR-4001 Composite Sampler is useful for taking multiple samples of a defined amount and dispensing them into a single container. Sampling is triggered automatically by the fluid level as detected by a float switch. FUNCTION The sampler has the following user-defined functions which must be configured by the user prior to sampling: Sample Volume Number of Sample time Samples Interval The float sensor must be positioned at the appropriate level where triggering is desired. The actual sample volume collected in the bottle will vary depending on vertical lift and, to a lesser extrent, sample volume selected. The greatest accuracy is achieved in the middle of the range, i.e., with a 10 ft head and 500 ml sample. Sample volume may vary up to 20% at the end of the range (0 ft and 20 ft of head). NOTE The controller will not keep the history of every sampling event for a given sampling cycle. Therefore, the user must record separately the sample (aliquot) volume, number of samples desired, and time interval between samples. Customer is responsible for keeping a written record of the configuration values input into the controller for a given sampling cycle. In particular, record on paper the sample (aliquot) volume, number of samples desired, and time interval between samples. The controller will provide a date/time stamp only for the start of the sampling cycle, i.e, the start of the first sample. The time at which subsequent samples occur must be deduced from the input values. The controller will not keep the history of every sampling event for a given sampling cycle. 3

OPERATION Chapter 2 SET UP Setting up the TR-4001 Composite Sampler is very simple. First, open the box, and remove the sampling hose and any extra packing material. Insert the sampling hose in the white coupling on the side of the box. Plug the water level sensor into the 4-pin plug on the side next to the sampling hose inlet. Ensure the flow switch has not come loose from its mounting. It is located just above the bottle filler, on the pump housing. Mount the sampler upright. NOTE The Sampler must be in an upright position to operate. This is required because the flow switch as well as the sample bottle and its internal float switch must be in the vertical position to operate correctly. Avoid drilling holes in the watertight sampler box. If you must drill holes, make sure to seal the openings with silicone sealant to prevent moisture or water from penetrating the sampler and damaging electronic components. BATTERY The supplied battery is a 12 volt, 7.5 Ah gel cell rechargeable battery. To work correctly, the battery must be fully charged before use. See Battery Care and Maintenance in Chapter 4. NOTE DO NOT STORE YOUR GEL CELL BATTERIES IN AN UNCHARGED CONDITION OR LET THEM DISCHARGE PAST 10.5 VOLTS. 4

OPERATION OPTIONAL SOLAR PANEL The optional solar panel prevents the battery from self-draining and helps ensure that expensive replacement is not required. Although it will generate power even under cloudy conditions, it should be mounted in a clear area (not under a tree canopy), preferably pointing to the south. WATER LEVEL SENSOR The sampler uses a water level sensor to activate the sampling process. A sample will be taken only when the float in the water level sensor is in contact with the water source and has risen to the activation point. ON OFF Positioning the sensor. The body of the sensor is grooved. The water trip ( ON ) level of the float corresponds to the top of the groove. The bottom of the groove corresponds to the OFF position. Knowing this will help you position the sensor at the desired level. Operating Suggestion: Secure the water level sensor the appropriate level using the built in groove. PICK UP TUBE WITH STAINLESS STEEL STRAINER The sampler comes with a 20 foot by ¼ ID reinforced clear PVC pick up tube with a weighted stainless steel strainer. This is attached to the case using a quick-connect connection and weighted for strength against strong currents or debris. Locate the sampler within 15 ft the pick up area. The groove in the body is to make it easier to secure the strainer to a rebar, post or other support. 5

OPERATION SAMPLE BOTTLE The sampler is provided with a single high-density polyethylene* sample bottle with a capacity* of 10 liters (2.5 gal). Its cap is an integral part of the sampler because it has the fill inlet, air vent and high water shut off sensor permanently attached to it. In use, the cap from a new bottle will be used to seal the full sample bottle taken from the sampler. *Other bottle sizes and materials are available. High Water Shut-off Sensor FLOW SWITCH A flow switch is mounted in the pump discharge tube, between the bottle cap and the pump body. The purpose of the switch is to sense the arrival of fluid and control the amount of time the pump is turned ON which in effect controls the sample volume. There is no setting or calibration required for the switch. Just as the High Water Shut Off Sensor requires the sampler to be operated upright, this switch also requires the sampler to be operated with the bottle in the vertical position. CONTROL PANEL The control panel allows you to: Configure your sampler, i.e, define certain conditions such as when to take a sample, how large the samples must be, and more. Display readings such as the date and time when a sample was taken. Chapter 3 describes how to configure the controller. 6

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Chapter 4 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Battery Care SMART BATTERY CHARGER The battery charger is fully automatic. The charger output depends on the condition of the battery it is charging: After reaching peak 14.4 V (dc), charger automatically switches to 13.2 V (dc) float voltage. When voltage drops below 12.6 V (dc), charger resumes charging back to 14.4 V (dc). NOTE: If the battery is damaged or its voltage is 5 V or less, it cannot be recharged properly with this charger. Indicator Lights: the GREEN and RED lights indicate the status of the charge. If the light is not lit, the battery is not properly connected and/or the charger is not plugged into AC Power. RED: The battery charger is in the process of fully charging the battery. This process may take a full day or more on some batteries. GREEN: The battery charger is in the storage mode of charging. In this mode, the charger will maintain the battery at full charge. If the battery becomes discharged due to an external current draw or excessive internal battery losses, the charger will automatically switch itself back to the charge mode of operation. If the charger is charging but the light does not turn green, the battery may be defective. Take the battery to be tested. 14

CARE AND MAINTENANCE CHARGE METHOD High performance and long service life of batteries in the Durham Geo Slope Indicator Storm Water Samplers depend upon correct charging. Improper charging modes or inadequate charging equipment result in decreased battery life and/or unsatisfactory performance. Any of the conventional charging techniques may be used, but to obtain maximum service life and capacity, along with acceptable recharge time, constant current/constant voltage charging is recommended. A charge quantity of % of the previous discharged quantity is needed for fully charging the battery. The charging voltage of battery decreases with increasing temperature and increases with decreasing temperature. At a temperature below 5 C (41 F) or above 35 C (95 F), temperature compensation for charging voltage is necessary. At ambient temperature the compensation will not be necessary. Overcharging should be avoided: As a result of too high a charge voltage, excessive current will flow after reaching full charge, causing decomposition of water in the electrolyte and, hence, premature aging. Undercharging should also be avoided: If too low a charge voltage is applied, the charger current output will essentially stop before the battery is fully charged. This allows some of the lead sulphate to remain on the plates, which will eventually reduce capacity. STOREAGE TEMPERATURE RECHARGE INTERVAL AND METHOD Below 20 C (68 F) 9 months, charge for 16 hrs at 14.4 V 20 C - 30 C (68 F - 86 F) 6 months, charge for 16 hrs at 14.4 V above 30 C (86 F) 3 months, charge for 16 hrs at 14.4 V (avoid this storage condition) CHECKING BATTERY CHARGE IN THE FIELD You can view the voltage by selecting the Report Screen (#8 on the controller s Main Menu) or you can measure the voltage across the battery terminals with your voltmeter. READING BATTERY CONDITION V Battery is fully charged V Battery has about 65% of its charge and needs to be recharged V Battery is discharged to the point where it must not be used on the sampler. It needs a full recharge cycle. 5 V or less Battery is totally discharged to the point where it may be damaged or may not be able to be recharged fully. 15

CARE AND MAINTENANCE HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS Do not short the terminals. Do not reverse polarity. Do not let the battery be discharged totally or it will damage it. Do not store gel cell batteries in an uncharged condition. Do not place the battery near or in fires. Do not use the battery in a container or bag without proper ventilation. Operate at a temperature between 5 C to 35 C (40 F to 90 F) for cycle use. To properly store the battery, remove battery from equipment or charger and store in a dry and cool place. Immediately recharge after discharging. If sulfuric acid from the battery is spilled on skin or clothing, wash anywhere the acid came in contact with water. If acid comes in contact with eyes, flush with large amounts of water and immediately see a doctor. NOTE Avoid mixed use of batteries. Different capacities, histories, or manufacturers of batteries may cause damage to the batteries or other equipments. 16

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Peristaltic Pump Care OPERATING TIPS: CAUTION When changing flow direction, allow the pump to come to a complete stop before starting again. Failure to do so could cause permanent damage to the motor. FOR OPTIMUM TUBING LIFE Periodically move the tubing so that a different segment is in the pump head, or change the tubing link. This will avoid excessive tubing wear at any specific point. Always move the worn tubing to the suction side of the pump. RUN DRY The pump can run dry without damaging the motor or drive unit. However, the tubing life will be reduced. PRIMING The peristaltic pump is self priming and will hold vacuum when turned off. TUBING REPLACEMENT Change the pump tubing as soon as any signs of cracking, wear, swelling or stiffness are seen. Replacing worn tubing before it leaks will help avoid spillage, and possible costly repairs. Turn the pump OFF. Disconnect the battery or the external power cord if it is being used before removing or installing tubing. Fingers or loose clothing could be caught in the pump mechanism. Always wear safety glasses and use appropriate measures to protect operator and equipment. Make sure the pump tubing is drained to avoid spills. 17

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Procedure for replacing the pump head tubing: 1. Disconnect power to the pump. FIG Disconnect the suction and discharge tubing from the pump tubing. 3. Remove the pump cover. 4. Pull out the old pump tubing and discard. GRIPPER (INLET PORT) OUTLET PORT FIG. 2 FIG. 3 FIG. 4 FIG Clean the roller race, removing any particles that could damage the tubing. 6. Using the extra bracket (Fig. 1) rotate the roller bracket assembly until it is in the position shown in Fig. 2. (make sure the power is still disconnected). 7. Push the new tubing into the inlet port, anchoring the tubing in grippers (see Fig. 3). If using a 9 piece of tube, 1½ should extend outside of the inlet port. 8. Continue to rotate the roller bracket assembly using the extra the extra bracket while pushing the tubing into the roller race (Fig. 4). 9. Insert the tubing in the outer port (Fig. 5) and secure the cover. 10. Reconnect the suction and discharge tubing and use tie fasteners approximately ¼ from the end. Be sure the fastener is on the outside of the pump housing and is not interfering with the roller assembly. Tube / Sleeve Assembly: Insert the suction tubing to the pump tubing and secure the assembly with a tie fastener placed approximately ¼ from the end of the pump tubing (the larger tubing). Be careful to not over tighten and collapse the inner tubing. Install the tubing with the tie fastener on the inlet side of the pump. Note: make sure the fastener is on the outside of the pump housing and is not interfering with the roller assembly. 18

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Other FLOW SWITCH The flow switch does not require adjustments or calibration. However, it is a good idea to open the case and inspect the float mechanism to make sure its travel is unimpeded. Simply pry the two halves of the case open with a screw driver and clean the interior parts of any deposits, obstructions or biological fouling. FLOAT SWITCH The float switch does not require adjustments or calibration. However, it is a good idea to inspect the float mechanism to make sure its travel is unimpeded. Clean the interior parts of any deposits, obstructions or biological fouling. 19
