4 2. INTRODUCTION The Permaquip Brake Test Tools are designed for use to facilitate testing of brakes on Permaquip equipment with braked wheels. The Ø6 Brake Test Tool is designed to be used on the Permaquip Link Trolley, Link Trolley with permanent Light Brackets, Ironman, Scaffold Trolley and Scaffold Trolley Plus. The Ø10 Brake Test Tool is designed to be used on the Permaquip Type A and B Trolleys fitted with aluminium wheels and those fitted with steel wheels (Drum Trolley, Railman, Type B Towing Trolley, Personnel Carrier and Gas Bottle Trolley). 3. SAFE AND CORRECT USE Please keep this User Guide for future reference. To ensure safe and correct use of the Brake Test Tools the following should be noted: Wear feet protection when using the Brake Test Tool. Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn according to local regulations. During transit Brake Test Tool should be retained in a tool bag or similar container, and kept away from all electrified lines. The Brake Test Tool must be replaced if any component becomes damaged. Store the Brake Test Tool in a secure position. Do not use the Brake Test Tool for any other purpose than as described in the introduction. MAN/M/O/166_02 4

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Note that: The Maintenance and Testing of the Brakes, Wheels and Axles are defined as Railway Safety Critical under CoP0010, Railway Safety Critical Maintenance Elements of Small Plant and Equipment. The Maintenance and Testing of the Brakes are covered under CoP0018, Rail Mounted Manually Propelled Equipment. The brakes must be maintained and tested at a periodicity of no greater than 3 months. The Brake Test Tools should be used to ensure that the brakes fitted on Permaquip equipment with braked wheels operate correctly. 1. Ensure that the brake linkage on the product under test is in good condition and that all moving parts are lubricated with general purpose grease. 2. Check that the brake linkage operates correctly and that the brakes are applied when the Brake Handle is released. Please refer to the appropriate product User Guide for more detail. 3. Position securely the product under test so that the braked wheels are clear off the ground and the brake handle can remain fitted. 4. If you are using the Brake Test Tool to test nylon wheels, lightly abrade each Brake Test Tool brake pad with emery cloth (grade 120) before use to remove any surface contaminant. 5. With the Brake Test Tool brake pads positioned over the wheel tread, rotate the hexagonal bar until the pads act on the tread surface, thus locating it in position. 6. Using a calibrated torque wrench, set at the required torque and fitted with a 24mm A/F socket, rotate the torque wrench. The required torque is defined in the appropriate product User Guide. 7. When the brake is operating correctly the wheel will not rotate under the torque applied. If not check the following: Brake adjustment Brake Pad wear Brake Pad cleanliness and contamination Wheel cleanliness Brake Spring Replace and clean as appropriate. Retest. 8. Repeat the test for all four quadrants and in both directions of rotation, for each braked wheel. MAN/M/O/166_02 6

7 Note that for testing Link Trolleys that have been fitted with permanent corner light brackets, different Brake Test Tool brake pads will need to be fitted to the Ø6 Brake Test Tool. Three of these smaller brake pads are required for each Brake Test Tool. The photo below shows the correct position in use when this is required. 7. MAINTENANCE The internal gears should be cleaned and lightly oiled after use. Check for damage and replace as required. MAN/M/O/166_02 7
