3 Introduction CUI is a common threat for Statoil s installations onshore and offshore; Despite the CUI threat was identified more than 30 years ago the industry is still lacking robust, efficient non-intrusive detection and inspection methods; Stripping and visual inspection is the most common method used by asset owners to detect CUI; Expensive, time-consuming and often appears unnecessary (piping/vessel in good condition); à What should we do to mitigate CUI? à Initiation of CUI management project in Statoil in Q Classification: Open

7 Preventing CUI We do not accept CUI, it can be prevented Technology toolbox Best technical solutions always Statoil uses coating and insulation systems which reduce considerably the CUI risk Solutions based on experience implemented in our Technical Requirements TR0042 gives requirements for coatings à Insulated piping and vessels: use Norsok M501 system 2A or 2B (if T 120 C), except class 3 (personnel protection) which uses system 1A and 1B TR1660 gives requirements for insulation systems à Insulation and weather protection selected according to table 1 and App B à These requirements are updated with company s knowledge 7 Classification: Open
8 Preventing CUI We do not accept CUI, it can be prevented Company competence High company competence/knowledge Tests were run in Statoil CUI rig in 2014 to range the effect of insulations Tests were run in Statoil CUI rig in 2015 to range the effect of coatings Root causes of CUI: Company will collect experience from the different operating units to identify the root causes of CUI and quantify their relative importance (planned in 2016) à Lessons learnt from testing and experience should be implemented in next revision of TR Classification: Open
9 Preventing CUI We do not accept CUI, it can be prevented Maintenance Right maintenance at right time Requirements for maintenance of insulated piping available in TR1987 à Intervals between usual GVI based on location and classification of the piping à Stripping off insulation only if consequence classification is high or higher; interval between inspection determined with RBI assessment GL0560 new RBI tool for determination of stripping off intervals (internal workshops ongoing) 9 Classification: Open
10 Detect CUI We can detect CUI Technology Detect without stripping Detect without stripping = cost saving Participation to CUI Dog JIP run with FDTA, Gassco, CoP, Beerenberg and Oceaneering (still place for one more company) à Gas samples pumped under insulation à Samples sent to dog lab à Dogs identify «odour» of corrosion à Can dog differentiate slightly and highly corroded spots? à How far from corrosion spots can samples be taken and still be identify by dogs? Technology watch à HOIS, communication with technology suppliers, experience exchange with other oil companies 10 Classification: Open
11 Detect CUI We can detect CUI Commercial Inspection strategy Inspect at right level at the right time, Cheap and smart solutions to detect CUI Statoil inspection strategy: strip of and perform GVI This is the only 100% reliable method to detect CUI Statoil doesn t believe that NDT methods can replace strip-off +GVI (always some limitations in NDT methods) Projects on new NDT development on hold (except dog project) Results of inspection can be implemented as input to our RBI tool to increase interval between inspections 11 Classification: Open
12 Efficient Rectify after CUI We do it right the first time. Technology toolbox Best technical solutions always Re-insulate with compliance to TR0042 and TR1660 TR0042: TSA is required as coating under insulation à No good methodology to repair this type of coating à Aluminium has a tendency to corrode under organic coatings in presence of chlorides (crevice corrosion mechanism) à TSA reparation JIP has just started (with Sintef and Conoco Phillips). à Testing of TSA reparation solutions 12 Classification: Open
13 Efficient Rectify after CUI We do it right the first time. Company competence Performance indicators Define performance indicators Statoil SAP system will be used in order to define KPIs à Reporting of notifications, follow up expenses à Goal: quantify the effect of changes in strategy on costs AND technical integrity 13 Classification: Open
14 Summary concerning the way forward Prevention of CUI New installations should have the focus on insulating only when needed TRs continually updated with regards to our knowledge and experience Detection of CUI Main philosophy is to rely only on strip-of +GVI Inspection interval should be assessed by RBI approach Conventional NDT methods can be used as input to the RBI models (extend inspection intervals) Rectifications after CUI occurred Existing installation should optimize their insulation Study is ongoing on TSA reparations KPI will be defined to have better control on CUI management 14 Classification: Open
