8 Training a belt in motion by adjusting the idlers: Before any work commences a risk assessment must be conducted to ensure all risks are identified and that adequate controls are put in place. Ensure to do a visual inspection on all tools and equipment to be used prior to starting the task. Ensure to use correct PPE as required at the area to be worked at. Never attempt to train a belt with lose of free hanging clothing (lose reflector vest or overall witch is too long or over size). When arriving at the area it is required to check for uneven ground, trip hazards, sharp objects, spillage on walkways, open moving machinery and wet slippery surfaces. Identify the area of the belt to be trained. Where the belt is longer than 100m a spotter should be placed 50m up stream (the direction from which the belt is coming) to check for lose flaps or strands so that a warning can be given before it reaches the person training the belt. To move the belt away from you, adjust idler frames in the same direction of belt travel. To move the belt towards you adjust idlers or frames against the direction of travel. Set the idler on the same side as the fault. If the belt runs out to the left, set left side of the idler by placing it forward steering the belt to the centre. Copyright reserved, S.A.C.E.A,

9 Training a belt in motion by adjusting the idlers: Look in the same direction of travel as the belt, if the belt is still misaligned, start to train the top idlers. Steer the idler in the direction the belt needs to go to centralize. The idler frame may only be adjusted by using a hammer with a long reach while the belt is in motion, allowing no part of the body to enter the structure. Never allow the hammer to go past the bracket used to fix the idler frame to the structure/stringer. The hammer shall only be allowed to make contact with the idler frame. For any adjustments to be made, where you are required to enter the structure perimeter or behind a guarded area, the belt must be stopped, isolated and locked out. This includes the tail-end, drive- or head-end and take-up pulleys or where loosening of idler frames on top or bottom have to take place. Where any training at or near pulleys are required the belt shall be stopped, isolated and locked out. Only a trained person, accompanied by a second person (spotter) will train conveyor belts. The spotter will be required to stand in a position that he can safety monitor the task and stop the belt immediately in an emergency. Never enter or work under or enter on maintenance side of belt, unless conveyor is stopped, isolated and locked out. Copyright reserved, S.A.C.E.A,

10 Training a belt on a hydraulic adjustable take-up Before any work commences a risk assessment must be conducted to ensure all risks are identified and that adequate controls are put in place. Ensure to do a visual inspection on all tools and equipment to be used prior to starting the task. Ensure to use the correct PPE as required at the area to be worked at. When arriving at the area it is required to check for uneven ground, trip hazards, sharp objects, spillage on walkways, open moving machinery and wet slippery surfaces. Start the hydraulic power pack and operate the required hydraulic cylinder to obtain adjustment. If the belt is running to the right side you must tension the right side and if the belt is running to the left side you must tension to the left side. Leave the belt to run a view cycles and check if the belt is still running straight. Only a trained person, accompanied by a second person (spotter) will train conveyor belts. The spotter will be required to stand in a position that he can safety monitor the task and stop the belt immediately in an emergency. Ensure all guards are in place. When training is complete, report to relevant supervisor that training is complete or if other deviations were found. Copyright reserved, S.A.C.E.A,

11 Training a Magnet belt: Before any work commences a risk assessment must be conducted to ensure all risks are identified and that adequate controls are put in place. Ensure to do a visual inspection on all tools and equipment to be used prior to starting the task. Ensure to use the correct PPE as required at the area to be worked at. Only a trained person, accompanied by a second person (spotter) will train conveyor belts. The spotter will be required to stand in a position that he can safety monitor the task and stop the belt immediately in an emergency. When arriving at the area it is required to check for uneven ground, trip hazards, sharp objects, spillages on walkways, open moving machinery and wet slippery surfaces. Ensure all guards are in place. Get the correct hand tools to fit the nuts on the adjusting rods and ensure secure footing. When the magnet belt runs out to the right it must be tensioned on the Left Adjusting Rod and if it runs out to the left it must be tensioned on the Right Adjusting Rod. The belt must be observed for at least 20 minutes after each adjustment to ensure the belt doesn t run to much out to either side and create an opportunity to damage the belt if let run on the structure for extensive periods at a time. When a belt is trained to satisfaction, over inspection should be done after two hours of training. When training is complete, report to the relevant supervisor that training is complete or if other deviations were found. Copyright reserved, S.A.C.E.A,
