4 1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The IMPACT TH-134 is an advanced integrated hardness tester distinguished by its very compact size, high accuracy, wide measuring range and simplicity of operation. It is suiteble for testing the hardness of all metals and widely applied in many areas of industry worldwide. The IMPACT TH-130hardness tester combines the universal impact device D and a data processor in a single unit. It automatically computes all Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell or Shore hardness values. The impact direction can be set so that accurate values can be achieved at any angle, even up-side down! Statistical mean value is automatically provided. The measuring method of the IMPACT TH-134 is defined as the quotient of the impact body s rebound velocity over its impact velocity. When the tester is connected to its associated printer it can perform real time printing or batch printing. It can also be equipped with optional accessoires such as support rings, to meet the requirements of specialised applications. 1.3 TYPICAL APPLICATIONS * In situ testing of large and/or heavy components, items already installed as parts of a machine * During manufacture, especially of mass produced components * In the stores for material identification * In locations with difficult access or in confined spaces 1.4 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS * Hardness Scales : HRC, HRB, HRA, HV, HB, HS, HL * Size : 150 x 22 x 53 mm * Impact device : Integrated model D * Impact energy : 11 Nmm * Test tip : Tungsten Carbide * Accuracy : Mean uncertainty +/- 1 percent ( corresponding to +/- 1 HRC at HRC = 58 ) * Max.hardness of sample : 980 HV * Weight : 130 g * Operating time : 8 hours continuous use / rechargable * Impact direction : Any angle * Operating temperature : 0 to +50 degrees C Criteria samples ( see chapter 2 ) * Min. weight of sample : 5 kg (less than 5 kg to 0.1 kg: coupled on solide support) * Min. thickness of sample : 5mm(coupled: 3mm) * Min. thickness of layers : 0.8mm * Min. radius of curved surface : 30mm (with support rings: 11mm) * Coupling paste is available for testing thin or small parts weighing less than 2Kg. 6 2. PRETREATMENT OF SAMPLES 2.1 GENERAL To eliminate hardness error possibly resulted from the roughness of sample surface, the test surface should be smooth (if possible polished) until its roughness Ra attends no more than 2mm (or Rz < 10mm). The test surface should be clean and free from oil stain. 2.2 MEASURING IN GROOVES, CYLINDERS AND CONCAVE SURFACES On curved surfaces having a radius of under 30mm, effective positioning on the workpiece is facilitated by the use of support rings (set of 7). The appropriate support ring is screwed on to the end of the impact device in place of the standard flat support ring. The set includes support rings suitable for bar/tube and grooves up to a radius of 11mm. Special support rings for convex or concave surfaces can be manufactured. 2.3 SUPPORT AND COUPLING OF THIN AND/OR LIGHT COMPONENTS * For test samples weighing over 5kg, no support is needed * Samples of cantilever or thin shell shape and samples weighing between 2 to 5 kg, need bearing support weighing over 5 kg, to be coupled firmly and tightly with them so as to prevent themselves from bending deformation or displacement due to impact force * Test samples weighing less than 2 kg should be coupled firmly and tightly with a support weighing over 5 kg * The coupling surface between the sample and the support should be plain and smooth * Proper but not excessive amount of coupling paste should be applied between the coupling surfaces * The direction of impact should be perpendicular to the coupling surface * Minimum weight of a test sample should not be less than 100 g, minimum thickness, not less than 5 mm and minimum depth of hardened layer, not less than 0,8 mm * The surface of a clamp holding the sample should be perpendicular to the impact direction Large plate, long bar or bent work piece * When the test sample is a large plate, long bar or bent work piece, impact force can cause it deformed or unstable and bring about error in measurement even if its weight or thickness seems applicable. In this case reinforcement should be bound to the back of the sample surface opposite of the impact force. * Test sample should not be magnetic in property. Manual TH-134 5

Let the black slides go back upwards to their initial state. (3) Put the tester on the clean and polished surface with the black cilindrical part on the exact spot. Take care the black support ring is well fixed (screw-fitting). Take care also that there is a distance of at minimum 3 mm between two measurements. Put your thumb and finger on both sides on the tester just above the black cilinder and press the tester at the workpiece with normal force. (4) Now start a measurement by pressing the button on top of the tester with the other hand, to release the impact body. Keep the tester stabil all the time. (5) As soon as the impact body has hit the surface, you can take the tester away. It is not neccesary to wait longer. Read the first reading on display and repeat the measements untill you have reached a set average (see paragraph 3.1 / IV). Note: Readings out of range will be marked by highrange or lowrange on display. Continue or set another hardness scale. 8 Manual TH-134
10 4. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR 4.1 MAINTENANCE Do you best to avoid shock, heavy dust, damp, strong magnetic field, oil stain. Always release the impact spring when the test is over! Clearing the tube * Clean the guide tube and impact body with a soft long brush after its performance of some tests in the following way. Loosen the black support ring and take out the impact body. Clean the tube by winding in counterclockwisely a sticklike brush until it reaches the bottom and then pull it out carefully. After repeating the same procedure some 5-6 times, fix the impact body and support ring again. * Never apply lubrication of any kind to the impact body or the tube. Charging * Charge the battery regularly. Usually a storage battery should be charged after working continuously at an interval of 8-12 hours. The charging process will take 8 hours. Built in the processor are two nickelcadmium storage batteries which generally last two years. If they are worn out they can be replaced at your TIME Technology Service Center. Don t open the tester yourself with repect to the warranty period. Testblock calibration Use the testblock to test the IMPACT on accuracy. The tolerance is +/- 1 percent. This means at HLD=800 a deviation of 12 units HLD up or down is okay. Ineffective measurements are possibly caused by a worn out spherical ball of the impact body after 3000 to measurements, depending on use and hardness of samples. The impact body can be renewed by the TIME Technology Service Center as a spare part. 4.2 REPAIR * If LCD appears blinker, it suggests that the battery voltage is lower than rated. Please turn off the power and charge the battery. * If LCD doesn t display, please turn off the power immediately. Please return the tester to your TIME technology Service Center. * When finding out any abnormalities otherwise, the user is kindly advised to transfer the tester to our Service Center as well. Thank you. Manual TH-134 9
