What NENS Means for You A guide to Energy Networks Associa4on (ENA) New Standard for PPE for Electrical Arc Hazards October 2015 HTT Corp 2015 What NENS Means for You
NENS : Guideline to the selec4on, use and maintenance of PPE for electrical arc hazards
INTRODUCTION Energy Networks Associa4on (ENA) NENS09 update ENA has recently reviewed the NENS 09 Guideline in rela>on to electrical arc hazards, upda>ng the Guideline to reflect advances in both protec>ve technology and tes>ng capability. The purpose of these changes is to provide responsible organisa>ons with the ability to select suitable Personal Protec>ve Equipment (PPE) for workers dealing with both high and low voltage electrical systems. The primary change to the Guideline is the focus on Arc Rated (AR) clothing, being differen>ated from more commonly- used Flame Retardant (FR) clothing. Please note, this document is intended as an overview only. For full details on the NENS 09 standard, refer to SAI Global for your copy: hsp://infostore.saiglobal.com/store HTT Corp 2015 What NENS Means for You 3
SCOPE OF NENS Three areas of guideline coverage NENS 09 describes the following: Apparel design and features; Material performance requirements; Tes>ng methodologies and compliance requirements. The following pages provides a summary of each. HTT Corp 2015 What NENS Means for You 4
SCOPE OF NENS (CONT.) Apparel Base garments (long sleeve shirts, trousers, coveralls) are recommended to have a min. ATPV of 4cal/cm2, that is HRC1. Garment design is recommended to include the following: Shirt fronts closed (i.e. no opening) or where busons are used, the busons and openings should be covered by an addi>onal panel of material. Sleeve cuffs closed at wrist. E.g. cuff placket to include full gusset. Pockets manufactured from a covering layer of same material as base garment with FR thread. Vent material in base garments should be comprised of FR fabric and designed to ensure that ARC proper>es of the garment are not compromised. Material Arc rated fabrics are FR fabrics tested and proven to self ex>nguish when exposed to an arc event. Arc rated base garments worn if exposure >1.2cal/cm 2. Base garments: minimum ATPV HRC1 = 4cal/cm 2. Notably, all Arc Rated clothing is FR, but not all FR clothing is Arc Rated. HTT Corp 2015 What NENS Means for You 5
SCOPE OF NENS (CONT.) Compliance IEC : Live working Protec>ve clothing against the thermal hazards of an electric arc Part 2: Requirements. ASTM F1506: Standard performance specifica>on for tex>le material for wearing apparel use by electrical workers exposed to momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards. Test Methods IEC : Live working Protec>ve clothing against the thermal hazards of an electric arc Part 1: Test methods Method 1 Determina>on of the arc ra>ng (APTV or EBT50 of flame resistant materials for clothing). ASTM F1959: Standard Test Method for Determining the Arc Ra>ng of Materials for Clothing. HTT Corp 2015 What NENS Means for You 6

CONCLUSION Where to from here? In order to equip workers and others dealing with electrical arc hazards with suitable PPE, organisa>ons should follow the updated NENS 09 Guidelines from ENA. The emphasis on Arc Rated (AR) clothing (as opposed to FR only) will require an assessment of currently issued PPE and the determina>on of new garment supply required to comply with the updated Guidelines. The HTT NENS 09 compliant garment range is denoted by the following symbols: Our specialist team are available to advise on masers rela>ng to both the NENS 09 standard and apparel selec>on.
