2 2 December 2006 l RMR Porsche Time for a Change The 89 car is getting a bit long in the tooth; it s a 1989 Carrara with 155,000 miles. I ve not minded the aging process over the last 10 years with my Porsche. As a car ages, the nits and nats that go wrong are chances to spend some quality time in my garage, and when a complex problem arises, it s an opportunity to chew the fat with guys and gals at your favorite Porsche shop. You ll surely find out how everyone s cars are doing after a long season, who is upgrading suspensions, who missed a shift and is rebuilding their engine, who is planning a project car and even who is buying and selling their cars. Like many club members, I stop in throughout the season to get the latest results from an event, news about people and advice about my car. I call it the lug nut telegraph. PRESIDENT S MESSAGEESSAGE But instead of being instant track success, these cars were a bit distant, and not as enjoyable on the track for several seasons while the sorting out of both car and driver took place. It takes time to like a change in something as personal as a Porsche, particularly when you drive as much as we do in RMR with all the events each year. Now Alex went the other way by stepping back in time to a 911 race car, with power nothing, turbo-not and a tire flat-spotting lack of ABS. His 2006 Turbo will be the daily driver now, and enjoying the race car and learning new driving techniques will be an adventure for next year. Dan has his old but perfect Pumpkin orange 911 that shows up at autocrosses now and then. Lee brings his green 356 out, original as can be, and he s had it for more than a few miles and years. Randy fixes his white 911. Whatever might break gets repaired in his garage, and with a full repaint last year, it looks as good as it drives. For them, it is the itch to hold onto a car they have known well over the years. I m ready for a change though, and maybe a Boxster will be that something new, all fresh and full of Porsche adventures on the road. Another change for me is leaving the RMR board for After 10 years of enjoying the opportunity the members gave me to volunteer and lead the club, it is truly time to find someone new and fresh to hop in the RMR driver s seat and head us down that road to adventure, friends and fun. And speaking of buying and selling a car, the time comes when you want to make a change and you start to seriously look at cars on the lots and on the internet and, of course, on the lug net telegraph. Newer model Porsches are intriguing me with their new technology, comforts and many engineering improvements. Somehow, my list of the 89 car to-dos doesn t seem as interesting as it once did. It could be the traditional new car season that has me looking again this fall, or all the car ads on TV, or the latest Porsche review in Panorama magazine. But this may be the year for a change for me and my 89 car. Other RMR members have had that new car itch too. David sold his SC, a great track car, and all that is left is a photo of the blue Porsche at 2nd Creek hanging on his garage wall. You see it just over the hoods of an RS America and a Boxster S that soothed his itch for a new Porsche. Of course, collectors are always buying and selling cars, and there are several RMR members that are excellent collectors. Finding a special car you have always admired is reason enough to buy, assuming garage and budget capacities are adequate. But I wonder how they know when it is time to sell, and how they feel about someone else now caring for their treasures. Some members just fix up their cars and hold them. From basic repairs to full restorations for a concours winning result, keeping the same car has its delights too. For me at RMR, the more events I did, the more I enjoyed my Porsche. And the more often I showed up and raised my hand to volunteer, the more friends I made. All those early weekend mornings heading out to an event, or late evenings driving home from a board meeting were often chilly, but I was always warmed by the friendly camaraderie of the membership, inspired by the enthusiasm of new members and challenged to drive my best by both experienced competitors in the Challenge Series and by my driving students eager to learn. I expect my next Porsche to be different, yet the same, and I also know that RMR in the years ahead will be different but the same too. Thanks for the miles everyone, I ll see you in my mirrors. Andy Forberg, President Thursday, January 4 6:30 PM at 3R Automotive The January membership meeting will be held again at the spectacular shop of 3R Automotive, located at 3701 South MEMBERSHIP MEETING Kalamath in Englewood. 6 6 December 2006 l RMR Porsche To: From: Members of Colorado Amateur Motorsport Associates, LLC and their respective memberships Charlie Thompson, CAMA manager Subject: CAMA Track Development, Byers Colorado November 3, 2006 While the CAMA member representatives have kept their club boards fully informed of the progress of CAMA s plans, we have released minimal information to club members. In the past, information released prematurely has led to difficulties and inflated expectations, which were later dashed. Now that formal applications are in process and a track near Front Range airport appears unlikely, we believe it is time to release information on an exciting prospect for a new track near Byers. Assuming zoning approval, we can begin construction in 2007 and be operational by Back in January and February of this year, problems with the Sutton/Front Range project began to surface. CAMA began a feasibility study and preliminary negotiations on a possible track site farther east than Front Range. That study convinced the CAMA representatives that we could support our own facility and solidify the future of our clubs, even if an additional track were to be built in the Denver-metro area. The basis of the feasibility is the 45 event weekends already lost to our clubs from the closures of Second Creek, Mead and PPIR. It is underscored by the reduced track participation in 2006 as a result of the demise of these tracks, and the fact that the Sutton/Front Range project is on indefinite hold. In May CAMA entered into a contract for ~460 acres located east of Byers on Highway 36, within 60 miles of the Mousetrap (intersection of I-25 and I-70). The purchase price for this property is a million dollars less than the price for the Front Range property, and no residential or other development is nearby. We have temporarily nicknamed this property East of Eden. In June, after discussions with Arapahoe County planners, we requested the County to modify their agricultural regulations to include amateur motorsports facilities as a use by special review. The County Commissioner consideration on this request is scheduled for early December. If the Commissioners approve our request, we will submit an application for a use by special review. When approved, this permit will not expire. We will not be required to buy the land until we have the permit, and do not intend to begin major construction until we have sufficient funds to complete the track paving. We hope for permit approval in the late spring or early summer of next year, with construction beginning in late summer or early fall, in time to pave before winter. We have met with the business leaders in the area and they are supportive and enthusiastic about the prospect of an amateur race facility in their community. The Byers Development Council has sent a letter of endorsement to the County planning department, urging that our use request be approved. In August we presented a preliminary business plan to each of the five Boards. In this plan we identified a Phase 1, barebones construction budget requiring $2.8 million for a 2.4-mile road course with a Pueblo-style paddock. We believe the plan is achievable, requiring a minimum of individual member donations ($500,000) and a participation loan package totaling $1.4 million, along with $900,000 from the clubs investment in CAMA. The business model for East Of Eden assumes competition from a second Denver area new track, and is based on 25 weekends of rental rather than the average of 32 at SCR. It also assumes a reduction to 75% of the SCR test & tune revenue due to the additional distance from Denver. These numbers indicate that we can support the breakeven needs of our own facility with rental rates as little as 10% more than at SCR, and that the clubs can also conduct events at other new track should they be built. The five Boards each authorized CAMA to spend up to $50,000 in earnest payments and planning expenses. The $1.4 million loan program is under development and anticipates use of motorsport enthusiast lenders. Preliminary decisions for the $500,000 donation campaign are being made. For the final $900,000, CAMA has approximately $450,000 in its treasury, and will have $650,000 when the final SCR funds are rebated to the clubs and invested in CAMA. The Boards of each of the five CAMA clubs approved the concept of investment of an additional $50,000 from each of their treasuries in All the clubs except the Multi-Car Club Alliance have this $50,000 available, and the MCCA has assured CAMA that it can raise this money from its constituent clubs in a timely manner. These investments will provide CAMA with the additional $250,000 needed. Two new players have surfaced in the potential race track market. In Genoa (east of Limon and 100 miles from the Mousetrap), two individuals have permission from Lincoln County to build a motorsport complex. They have expressed their desire to build a facility the clubs could use, though their program appears mainly dependent on membership revenues under the country club concept. The second potential project is on land east of Agate, which is 70 miles out, including four miles of presently unpaved road. The Agate developer has an abundance of land under contract and is in negotiation with Elbert County to obtain permitting. This developer is also willing to work with the clubs and, while seeking membership investment of the country club style, appears to have other financing options. Both of these facilities are outside of CAMA s original goal of a metro Denver area facility within 60 minutes of the mousetrap. Both potential projects are fueled by commercial inter-

7 December 2006 l RMR Porsche 7 ests, and we can assume they will seek a reasonable return on their investments. While some of you are savvy detectives and may identify the land parcel under contract, we ask that you respect our position in the County process and refrain from any contact. As this is still a working farm, we could be liable for crop damage from people visiting the site, and we value our very good relationship with the seller. I will state that this land is not typical of the many parcels previously reviewed. The land under contract has excellent paved access and dramatic elevation changes that will provide an extremely exciting track! The abundance of land allows large and safe runoff areas and great potential for future expansion. I hope to follow up this letter in December with the news of our progress with the county and some details of the site plan and permit application, once submitted. A condensed copy of CAMA s East of Eden business plan will soon be posted on CAMA s website at for those who wish further detail. EISKHANA RETURNS! The once annual ice driving event returns January 20, 2007 to Lake Georgetown after a one year hiatus. The lake will be well frozen and ready for slippery ice driving fun and drivers education this year. We will meet for breakfast in a restaurant nearby before the event for planning, registration and boasting. Then we'll be off to the lake to test our driving skills on the ice. Afterwards we will gather at another local establishment to review our performance or invent one for ourselves. A little reminder to get life insurance. A silly, sweet, 3-foot-tall reminder. 10 10 December 2006 l RMR Porsche By Dwight Ingram TRICK OR CROSS 2006 Ghoulish drivers and spooky vehicles assembled early October 29th at RMR s annual Trick or Cross held at the Mt. Elbert Lot at DIA. Drivers arrived early to survey the sea of cones which morphed into a fast paced autocross course. After surveying the course, Susan Bucknam was asked why she is retiring her car and getting a new one, I need more power. That is the trademark of an Alan Fritze set autocross course. The two slaloms were set with Frankenstein sized cones. Ghostly turnarounds and a fast finish followed the slaloms. The drivers meeting got down to business and we had a special guest, Results Graeme s cousin Angus, who walked in playing the bagpipes. The costumes came out at the lunch break. First place went to Stan Paprocki, who came sporting a kilt. Second place went to the drunken waiter Phil O Brien. Spiderman, Cadet Ryan got 3rd. Porsche costume winner was Alex Acevedo s killer car that was covered in body parts. Second place was Spider car of Chris Lennon and 3rd went to Stan Poprocki. The driving continued after lunch and everyone had his or her chance to beat the clock. Bruce Waddle was overheard saying; I really need one of those Boxter S s. Thanks to everyone that helped out to make the Trick or Cross a great event. See you next year! 15 December 2006 l RMR Porsche COLORADOC OLORADO PORSCHE PARADE By Kathy Fricke 09 Colorado Parade Chair designate The Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain Regions of the Porsche Club of America are planning to host a Parade in Colorado in For those of you who have never attended a National Porsche Parade, and as a refresher for those of you who have, here is what a Porsche Parade is. The term Porsche Parade started in August 1956, when 64 enthusiastic 356 owners gathered at a suburban Washington motel for four days of Porsche enjoyment and friendship. A parade of Porsches through the Maryland countryside caused everyone to refer to the event as the Porsche Parade. The nickname has stuck, and the event now draws up to 1300 PCA members every year. The National Porsche Parade is the annual gathering or convention for PCA members from all over the world. We gather to talk Porsches, look at Porsches, drive Porsches, and share experiences. The Parade has been hosted by one or more PCA Regions each summer since 1956, and consists of at least five to six days packed full of competitive and social events, seminars, children s activities and much camaraderie. Besides entrants, representatives from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart and Porsche Cars North America also attend, along with numerous automotive-related spokesmen and women. The week consists of four major competitive events. The Concours d Elegance is a display of Porsches in a park-like or golf course setting, where the entrants cars are judged on cleanliness and originality. We are also going to have a Porsche wash and shine display at our Parade, which will take place along side the Concours cars. The Rally is a timed touring event over public roads. During the rally, all posted speed limits and traffic laws are obeyed. The Autocross is a single car timed slalomlike event, usually in a large paved parking lot. The Tech Quiz is a written test challenging the entrant s knowledge of Porsche technology and history. We will also be scheduling additional events such as a new event called the Zone Challenge, 5Kwalk/run event, and tours to local attractions to help round out the week. Off to the 2006 Parade in Portland Rocky Mountain region hosted its first Porsche Parade in Colorado back in 1960 at Aspen. The second Colorado Parade took place in 1966 in Colorado Springs. There was a twelve-year pause until 1978, when it took place in Aspen once more. The decision was made in 1988 to host the Colorado Parade jointly, when Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain hosted that Parade in Colorado Springs. And finally, 1998 took the Colorado Parade to Steamboat Springs, once again jointly hosted by both regions. Volunteers will be a large part of the success of the Colorado Parade, and our regions will need your assistance. At this point in organizing the 09 Colorado Parade we are in search of experienced Parade goers to Chair and volunteer for the many positions/jobs to help turn this adventure into a reality. We will all give many hours of our precious time and energy over the next two years toward this eventual Colorado offering to all of PCA. What I ask at this time is for you to consider attending the San Diego 07 Parade. The 08 Parade will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina and may be a bit more challenging for us Westerners to attend, although not impossible. It would be our recommendation that you put forth the effort to acquire the needed Parade experience by attending one or both of these Parades. You will not be disappointed. The November issue of Panorama magazine will contain a description of the up coming 07 San Diego, California Parade. It will explain the requirements of when and how to register for Parade. Please think about attending this Parade so you will acquire the Parade experience we will need for our own 09 Parade. The Pano article will give a specific date in January of 07 to go online and register. The Porsche Parade fills up quickly, and if you hesitate to register for even a few days after the official opening date, you may not get in. The regions of Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain are looking forward to another joint venture by hosting the 2009 Colorado Porsche Parade. More details on the site and 2009 dates will follow in additional articles.

18 18 December 2006 l RMR Porsche THE DRIVERS LOUNGE A Driver s View of Italy Nord not Sur!, yelped my wife, Ann, as we executed the first of what would be many wrong turns during our recent Italian visit. We had driven only a couple of kilometers from the Rome airport and, just as I was contemplating a quick U-turn to right the ship, a pair of lane-splitting Ducatis flashed by my window. Yup, we re not in Kansas anymore Toto! My normal, semi-aggressive driving style had met its match. I would wait patiently until we reached the next roundabout to get us headed back to the road north and our hillside retreat in Umbria. While looking at the map before setting out from Rome, I figured it would take us no more than two hours to reach the little hill town of Bettona, where we would be staying in a lovely agriturismo hotel. That would leave us better than an hour of daylight to get our bearings, unpack, and change for dinner. The problem was, we had to travel on four different roads to get there and that led to more wrong turns and some creative routechanging to cover our miscues. We were making this trip to celebrate twenty-five years of marital bliss, but to be sure, the decision to enter into this union was not made on the basis of Ann s map-reading or navigational skills. But, to be fair, imagine driving along a very twisty road you ve never seen before at a good clip, with the locals all over you from behind, while you try to look at a stack of 16 signs upon entering a roundabout hoping to determine which road of the four to take. There was much of this and so, there we were: four hours into our odyssey, squinting at the map under the Fiat Punto s meager Talk about too much information interior light trying to decide if the Autostrada we were traveling on actually had an exit at the last bit of road to our hotel. It was then that Ann announced that she didn t actually know the name of the establishment, that she had been exchanging s with the proprietress from a global website, and although we definitely had a reservation, we would have to ask around in town for this hotel that we knew only to be owned by a woman named Sylvia. I might have finally snapped, but what the hell, often the best parts of a vacation are the unexpected, off-beat things that you experience. Plus, Ann has more Italian than I ever will so this asking around bit would fall on her shoulders. Sure enough, the first place she asked said si signora!, they knew the place, and after a few more wrong turns we were in our room with a view out across to Assisi! It was ninethirty, but after all, that is when the Italians eat dinner so we were right on time! Over the next two weeks, we put many miles on the little Fiat, visiting towns founded in the first couple of centuries, traveling a countryside criss-crossed with vineyards and olive groves, as well as some beautiful inland lakes. We took the long way whenever possible. The Italian Autostrada system, as the Autobahn-equivalent is known, has a suggested left lane speed of 130KPH (about 81 MPH) but I was astounded at the closing speeds one can experience. Even when I had the Punto panting at 165 a big xenon-flashing Tuetonic sedan would be bearing down on us at 220 KPH. At one point, I was doing an honest one-hundred miles an hour and all the traffic in front of us was pulling away! I Did I mention the food?

19 December 2006 l RMR Porsche 19 thought this was all pretty amusing and soon became comfortable with the dance. It was like driving my F car in some enduro where they ve thrown the cup cars in with us. But after some porcini-mushroom-seeking-missile in the form of a black Alfa Romeo had shot past at close to 250 KPH, Ann asked if Jet Lag we could slow the pace and take more of the back roads, which we did. We were rewarded for this choice. At one point, we came upon a Sunday procession in a small town that started at the church and led into the nearby vineyards, presumably to bless the harvest. We simply waited patiently for 5 or so minutes until this happy group, complete with brass band, passed by. On another detour, we drove the entirety of the Amalfi coast thanks to another missed turn along the twisty mountain road that clings to the hillside and offers stunning views out over the Tyrrhennian Sea. So tight were the turns that at some corners convex mirrors had been installed to allow one to see whether the oncoming traffic features a huge bus that will require the entire road or simply a couple of motorbikes at full lean. Busier sections even had road marshals stationed who would stop traffic to allow busses to negotiate the sharper turns without crushing a family in a Fiat Uno. We saw relatively few Porsches, probably more Ferraris, but mostly big Euro sedans sharing the road with some of the smallest, most fuel efficient cars I ve ever encountered. With gasoline selling right at six bucks for 4 liters many cars including the Audi/BMW/Mercedes group, burn diesel. Quite a few use GPL or liquefied petroleum gas which is the cheapest of the three alternatives. The Smart Cars were very much in evidence, as were Mini-Coopers, which actually looked big compared to the many Puegot, Seat, and Citroen models that we saw. Inexplicably, I noticed a fair number of Jeep Grand Cherokees. But their fuel economy, like that of the X5 s and ML s, worked out to be about 40 cents/mile. All in all, the trip was great fun, with plenty of unexpectedly great experiences. My proudest moment occurred when we turned the car back in at the Rome airport with both side mirrors intact! Lastly, we were both lucky enough to find each other s perfect Christmas gift while in romantic Italy. Ann is getting a Garmin StreetPilot c530 and I a muzzle! I d like to express my thanks to Bob Polich for filling in for me last month and writing a splendid article on the family aspect of Club Racing. Mike Quigley Club Race Liaison
