For statistical purposes, two terms are used to categorize and count filings. A "case" refers to an entire civil action, with one or more plaintiffs and one or more defendants, within which cross-, counter-, and third-party claims might be filed. A "complaint" refers to that part of a case in which there is a potential judgment. For example, in a case with one plaintiff and two defendants, there are two complaints (two potential judgments). Cross-, counter- and third-party complaints within a case similarly add complaint counts/potential judgments. **There is a judgment for each complaint in a case (see above footnote), and the sum of contested and uncontested judgments is the total number of judgments. ***Complaint/judgment-based (see explanation * above for difference between case and complaint); these counts are included in the Uncontested/Contested Judgments.
