INTRODUCTION The data presented here are based on the results of the provincewide Relance Survey of Vocational Training at the Secondary Level, conducted annually by the Ministère de l Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) and the Ministère de l Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de la Science (MESRS). The survey carried out in 2012 concerns the graduating class of The surveys carried out in 2011 and 2010 concerned the graduating classes of and , respectively. The purpose of this survey is to provide an accurate picture of the situation of graduates from secondary-level vocational training programs approximately nine months after they have earned a diploma. It meets a need for accurate, relevant information on how well recent graduates are faring on the labour market, just as the other two Relance surveys do in the case of college and university graduates. For further information on the programs covered in this brochure or on related matters, please refer to the other Relance survey documents available on the Ministère s Web site at IV
HIGHLIGHTS Some highlights from the 2012 survey (describing the situation as at March 31, 2012): As at March 31, 2012, approximately nine months after graduating, the employment rate for individuals with a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) was 75.5%, compared with 77.4% in 2011, a drop of 1.9 percentage point. In 2012, the employment rate was 79.9% for graduates with an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS), compared with 79.5% in The unemployment rate for DVS graduates was 10.1% in 2012, 2.4 percentage points below the 2010 rate of 12.5%. The unemployment rate for AVS graduates also dropped. It was 7.7% in 2012, compared with 9.5% in 2010, a decrease of 1.8 percentage point. Among those employed, 87.6% of DVS graduates and the same percentage of AVS graduates were working full-time (30 hours or more per week). In the case of DVS graduates, a significant gap between the full-time employment rate for women and that for men has been observed for several years. In 2012, the rate was 93.9% for men and 78.2% for women, a gap of 15.7 percentage points. Among AVS graduates, the corresponding gap was 11.4 percentage points in favour of men (92.7% compared with 81.3%). In 2012, among DVS graduates working full-time, 78.9% considered their job to be related to their field of study, compared with 80.3% in In 2012, the corresponding rate for AVS graduates was 77.7%. The average gross weekly salary for DVS graduates with a full-time job is on the rise. It rose from $695 in 2011 to $712 in 2012, an increase of 2.4%. For AVS graduates with full-time jobs, the average gross weekly salary rose from $690 in 2011 to $715 in 2012, an increase of 3.6%. 1
GLOSSARY OF THE MAIN TERMS USED IN THE TABLES TARGET GRADUATES Target graduates refers to all holders of a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) or an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS) who graduated during the academic year preceding the survey year. Employed refers to target graduates who stated they were self-employed or working for an employer, and not studying full-time. EMPLOYMENT Seeking employment refers to target graduates who stated they were actively looking for a job and were neither studying nor working. 2 STUDYING Studying refers to target graduates who stated they were either studying full-time or part-time, and not working. INACTIVE Inactive refers to target graduates who stated they were not employed, were not seeking employment, and were not studying. (UN) Unemployment rate (unemployed) refers to the number of graduates seeking employment compared with the number of people in the labour force (which includes people who are employed and people who are seeking employment).
FULL-TIME Working full-time refers to graduates working full-time, i.e. generally 30 hours or more per week. PART-TIME Working part-time refers to graduates working part-time, i.e. generally less than 30 hours per week. The proportion of graduates working part-time is obtained by subtracting the proportion of graduates working full-time from 100%. AVERAGE GROSS WEEKLY SALARY Average gross weekly salary represents the average gross income earned by workers for one week of full-time work. The data reflect only graduates working for an employer. IN RELATED FIELD Working in related field refers to graduates working full-time who consider their job to be connected to their field of study. 3
HOW INDICATORS ARE CALCULATED The calculation table below uses data from the 2012 Relance Survey of Vocational Training at the Secondary Level to illustrate the application of the definitions of the main terms used in the tables. Calculation example: Results of the 2012 survey of graduates with a DVS Number % Calculation Number of graduates targeted by the survey (size of the population) Total number of graduates who completed the questionnaire Employed / full-time / in related field / Seeking employment / Studying / Inactive / Unemployment rate / ( )
