7 The Company In-house design to production Design Working from customer supplied samples or data files, our engineers use CAD software to generate product and tooling designs. The Company Prototyping Upon initial design completion, 3D models are downloaded direct to our in-house rapid prototype machine. A production represented prototype is available for customer review within 24 hours. Toolmaking Once the design is released for production, tool designs are uploaded to our in-house 4 axis CNC machine. Tooling details are machined and assembled in-house providing our customers with a shorter lead time and competitive pricing. 9

8 The Company Thermoforming process Heating Radiant heaters are normally used to heat the sheet, which has been positioned above and below the plastic sheet of material. Start of forming After the material has reached the predetermined temperature, the heaters are removed. Forming step 1 Pre-stretch is used to achieve even wall thickness. Air is introduced to bow a small bubble, the mold is then raised into the pre-stretched sheet. Forming step 2 A vacuum is applied, the sheet is drawn into contact with the mold and the mold detail is picked up. Forming step 3 The material is allowed to cool. Fans and fine water mist may be used to help cool part evenly. After part is cool, it is released from the mold with air assist. 10

9 The Company Injection molding process Injection molding is a process where molten plastic is forced under pressure into a cavity where it cools and forms a part. The process steps are: Melting of plastic The heated barrel is charged from a hopper feed with material in granulated form. In the heated barrel the thermoplastic is melted. The Company Mold closed and clamping The mold is closed within the platen arrangement and clamped using necessary force to hold the mold closed during the plastic injection cycle. Injection of plastic The screw is driven forward under hydraulic pressure to discharge the molten plastic out of the barrel through the injection nozzle into the cavities in the molding tool itself. Holding pressure and cooling The screw is held in the forward position and a holding pressure is maintained on the solidifying material within the mold. Once the hold pressure phase has been terminated the mold must be closed for a set period of cooling time. During the cooling phase, the barrel is recharged with material for the next molding cycle. Mold open and part removal When the cooling phase is complete the mold is opened and the part is removed with a robot. 11

10 Automated h Component trays Trays with a precise fit Packaging with optimal protection Fragile products need to be securely packaged for transport, so that they arrive at their destination undamaged. Load trays that secure their contents with a precise fit thereby offering optimal protection against damage, are called component trays. Manufacturing process Component trays can be produced by thermoforming or injection molding. Features Component trays can be stacked as needed. There are stack and nest variants, which help save space when returning empties. Sometimes component trays are placed inside plastic containers. Others are manufactured from standardized frame tools. Custom-designed component trays Component trays are uniquely designed for each individual component geometry. The following pages demonstrate a variety of concepts that have been realized. 12 Component trays Stackable component trays from a frame tool An individual insert tool is developed for the product being packaged and is fitted into a standardized frame tool. This way the same frame can be reused as often as required. The principle of a frame tool A frame tool consists of a standardized base frame and an exchangeable customer specific insert. 14

14 Component trays Stackable component trays High efficiency When permitted, the component trays can be designed to be stacked on top of each other resulting in more products stored on the same footprint. Protection from contamination Fragile components, stored in stacked component trays, are protected from dust and dirt. 16

When the products are removed, the empty trays can be rotated 180 degrees and then nested inside each other. Nesting can provide space savings of up to 80% when transporting empties. 18

18 Component trays Component trays as interlayers Interlayer-concept Interlayer trays are component holders with specific requirements. Cavities on top of the tray are designed for the part it is to carry. The bottom side of the tray is then designed so that the tray will interface with the parts below. The upper tray transfers loads through the appropriate part surface below. 20

The thermoformed tray has tabs that fit in the milled holes of the container to enable a secure attachment of the tray to the container. 22 Component trays Component trays injection molded Tight tolerance There are times when robotic load and unload conditions require exact part location. In tight tolerance conditions like this, an injected molded component tray is the solution. Detailed features and undercuts There are also times when ribbing and undercuts necessitate injection molding as the only sensible production method. Volume Injection molding is generally more economical than thermoforming when very large quantities of component trays are required. 24

24 Component trays Combination of injection molded and thermoformed solutions Pallet sized tray This is only one of many examples: A stack nest thermoformed pallet sized tray is bolted to an injection molded pallet. Further pallet sized trays could be stacked on top. The top most tray could be covered with a lid to protect the parts. These stackable straight wall containers are compatible with the standard AIAG 48 x 45 pallet. 31 Stacking containers Container accessories All containers can be ordered with a variety of options: Snap-locks are designed for easy opening and closing. Security seals are also available to prevent tampering. Snap lock Hinge reinforcements permanently secure the lid to the container. 32 Stacking containers RAKO A versatile performer Extremely stable RAKO owes its name to a shortened form of the German word for frame construction, Rahmenkonstruktion. This frame construction creates a very stable container. A wide range of styles The RAKO basic container is a universal container with design flexibility. It allows for a wide number of design variations ranging from base options to different types of handles and sides. RAKO containers are available in ESD material. Base styles for low loads If a RAKO only has to take loads with a low weight, then a simple solid base is sufficient. Base styles for high loads If containers are being used on an automatic conveyor system, the base deflection should be virtually zero. In this case the base of the container has to be reinforced. For this, an additional plastic plate is welded onto the ribbing of the pre-formed concave base of the RAKO. This gives an enclosed double base, which can take a load of up to 155 lbs. A heavy-duty base can withstand the loading from a filled weight of up to 110 lbs. 34

38 Stacking containers Lockable cases and containers Cases RAKO containers can be closed with a lid. When these containers are fitted with carrying handles, they are also called cases. Locking methods To protect cases or containers with lids from unauthorized access, the lid can be locked. There are several possibilities for this: Locking the lid with sealable snap locks or a padlock. Security status Of course, locks alone do not necessarily protect against the theft of the entire container.
