29 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS A variety of factors and conditions can contribute to a collision. Police officers may indicate up to three driver factors for each driver, two vehicular factors for each vehicle, and up to two environmental factors for each collision. This table gives the number of collisions in which a given factor was listed at least once. Accumulations were made only once for each factor indicated in a collision, even if the factor was listed for more than one driver or vehicle. Therefore, the percentages give the percent of collisions in which a given factor is listed. HUMAN FACTORS ALL COLLISIONS PERCENT OF TOTAL FATAL COLLISIONS PERCENT OF TOTAL Inattention 50, Not Under Proper Control 17, Failed to Yield Right of Way 14, Misjudge Clearance 7, Following Too Close 7, Distraction 6, Too Fast for Conditions 5, Alcohol Involvement 4, Overcorrecting/Oversteering 3, Disregard Traffic Control 3, Turning Improperly 1, Drug Involvement 1, Improper Backing 1, Exceeded Stated Speed Limit 1, Fell Asleep 1, Improper Passing 1, Cell Phone 1, Lost Consciousness/Fainted Emotional Fatigue Sick Medication Physical Disability Weaving in Traffic

30 NOTE: MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC CRASHES 2010 DRIVER ERROR TABLES ALL DRIVERS Up to three errors per driver are coded for a given crash. However, only the first, most relevant error per driver is represented on this report, to avoid counting the same driver multiple times. This results in under-reporting of total errors. 32 2010 Utah Crash Facts Speed is the leading unsafe driving behavior that contributes to deaths. Speed Did you know in 2010: 9,716 speed-related crashes occurred in Utah which resulted in 4,673 injured persons and 118 deaths. Speed was a factor in 45% of fatal crashes in Speed-related crashes were 3.4 times more likely to be fatal than other motor vehicle crashes.
