Audi Club Northwest is proud to present The Seventh Annual Matt Ammon Memorial Driving School & Teen Clinic Sponsored by This packet contains basic information that you will need to participate in the event. Please read it carefully and thoroughly. If you have any questions, bring them up with the event master, at the driver s meetings or with your instructor. PLEASE PRINT THIS BOOKLET AND READ IT

Pre-Event Preparation A guide for first time drivers at driving school Step 1: Prepare your car Your car does not need to be in perfect condition or a "sports car" but it should be mechanically sound. The goal in many of our exercises is to push the car into some situations that will challenge the driver. The driver should not be distracted by brakes that barely work, a clutch pedal that occasionally goes to the floor, or wheels falling off. In other words the car should be the least of their worries. Our goals are to teach the DRIVER to be more involved. Distractions will detract from that experience and the learning. Some of these preparation items can be done at the event but it can save some time and stress to do it at home before the event. Items to be looked at before the event are as follows: 1. Remove loose items from your car: Check under the seats, in the door pockets, the back seats, trunk, etc. We are especially picky about the driver s and passenger s positions. We want you to eliminate distractions. The car will be pitching and yawing and the last thing we/you want is something from under the seat getting caught in the foot of the driver. It is best to remove the floor mats, and this can be done at the event. Remove things dangling from mirrors and accessories such as ipod mounts. If they are hard attached that is okay, but things suction cupped on, or clipped into air vents, should be removed. Phone chargers and radar detectors should also be removed. 2. Ensure the mechanics of your car are solid: We are not looking for sports cars or race cars. Modified cars for first timers are usually approached with caution by instructors. We are going to be testing the full capacity of the brakes. They will get hot. If you are lapping you should have fresh brake fluid and at least ½ brake pad thickness. If you are attending the teen clinic and/or autocross we recommend no less than 1/3 brake pad thickness. For the teen clinic fresh brake fluid is not as critical but is something that can become an issue with older vehicles on original fluid. If you are lapping your engine will be stressed and subjected to extremes. Engines are stressed in the teen clinic and autocross but not necessarily subjected to extremes. If you are due for an oil change we recommend you have it done before the event. Major leaks are a problem but a drip here or there is not going to offend anyone. Suspension and tires will take the most abuse in our schools. The good news is they are often the toughest to break. Tires should not have any damage or any cords showing. Suspension should not be wobbly or broken or bouncy. If you are lapping you should not show up with tires with wear bars showing. Many of our events are in the rain and it can be very dangerous to lap with old worn out rubber. 2

Step 2: Prepare yourself YOU are the most important part of this equation. 1. Come with a positive attitude. YOU WILL HAVE FUN. This is unlike just about any school you have ever attended. Our teachers are having a great time teaching you and you will be doing things that are fun. A smile is required. The people you are meeting are all volunteers and are there to help you learn more. If you have a question, please ask it. 2. Attend the chalk talk sessions which will be held on Saturday morning at Bremerton Motorsports Park. There are extremely important concepts taught there. Your learning at the event will be compounded by what you learn in the chalk talk sessions. Chalk talk sessions are a great opportunity to get answers to your questions. 3. Get a good night s sleep. The last thing you need to be is tired while performing the challenges we are going to be posing to you. It is hard to absorb information and focus on the task at hand if you are tired. Don't go out until 2:00 in the morning and expect to be ready to go at 8:00 am the next day. You will be tired after your day. Prepare for it by getting enough sleep the night before the event. 4. READ THIS BOOKLET. You should read it well now, cover to cover. It contains important information and will help you learn better. Think about it. If you are confused about something while trying to learn, then you are going to find it harder to learn. This booklet probably has all the answers to your questions. If not, then ask the questions before the event. We want your mind clear and ready for learning and don't mind answering questions before the event. 3

Arrival and Tech Inspection Step 1: Proceed to the paddock Turn left inside the gate and proceed to the paddock area near the metal building. Find a suitable parking location for the day. Please be respectful of spaces already taken by others, typically indicated by a plastic box or tarp or spare tire on the ground. Step 2: Check In in the metal building Go to the metal building and check in and you will receive your event registration packet. Step 3: Complete your tech inspection sheet Fill out your tech inspection sheet (see the last page in this handout) by checking the Pass or Fail box next to each item. Most of this sheet can and should be filled out prior to the event, so that at the event you only have to complete the sections applicable to the morning of the event. Remove items from your car, including floor mats, spare tire (if it is not bolted down), jack, tools and garage door openers. Remove hubcaps, wheel trim rings, lug nut/bolt caps and clean out the glove box as well. If it s not bolted down, take it out. It is allowed and encouraged for you to keep your logbook in your glove box so your instructor can sign it any time during the day. Step 4: Sign your tech inspection sheet Print your name, sign your name, and fill in the date at the bottom of the tech inspection sheet. Step 5: Get in line for tech inspection Proceed to the tech inspection line with your car, your tech inspection form and your helmet (required for Saturday all-day autocross). The tech inspectors will go over your form, double check your car and helmet (if applicable), and place a tech inspection sticker on the windshield. 4

Ground Rules Consumption of drugs or alcohol is not permitted at the event Speed limit on the entry road is 25 mph and is enforced by Bremerton s Finest No one under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be permitted to participate No one under 18 will be permitted to participate (unless enrolled in the Saturday Teen Clinic) Helmets must be rated Snell 2005 or newer Convertibles must be equipped with a roll bar (2 rule is in effect) Windows must be completely up or completely down Competitive driving of any sort, or timing of vehicles, is prohibited Passengers are prohibited in cars except when one person is a participant or instructor and the other is an instructor If you have a video camera, phone camera, or other recording device, including data recording, please consult the ACNW guidelines for online posting of media and data recording devices later in this handout Guidelines and Reminders The purpose of the Matt Ammon Memorial Driving School and Teen Clinic is to teach vehicle dynamics and driving safety. You will also have a great time, but if you drive in a hazardous way, you ll be black flagged and may be invited to leave the event. This event is not a racing school or a competitive event of any sort. Your Instructor It s a good idea to introduce yourself to your instructor before getting in the car whenever possible, it s never too early to start learning. Weather Weather is changeable so be prepared for rain and fog to Indian summer days. Bring a sweater as it can be quite cool in the morning, and rain gear as it can be quite wet. A hat and sunscreen are also highly recommended. Helmets Helmets rated Snell 2005 or newer are required for participants in the Saturday allday autocross and are supplied by the club if you do not bring your own. Clothing Long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended. Footwear should be light and smooth soled. Sandals and loose fitting shoes will not be allowed. Metal Building Registration will take place in the metal building. Bottled water and coffee will be available here as well. Storage of items that need to be kept dry is allowed but at your own risk. The metal building will be used for lunch, and dependent on weather and the size of the group, may be used for driver s meetings. Schedule The schedule is tight, and subject to disruptions. To be fair to all participants we will do our best to avoid shut downs during exercises. Stay up to date about schedule changes by listening carefully to announcements. Mechanical Problems Fix any problems with your car immediately. If you break down or run out of gas on the course, your car will be pushed to a safe location until it can be towed back and you will miss learning time. 5

Medical Information - Audi Club Northwest has a system in place where you can make available any medical or confidential information to aid workers should the need arise. Bring with you any information you think helpful to aid workers in a sealed envelope with your name and contact info on the outside. This will be held by our event safety steward where it can be retrieved by aid workers if needed or you can claim it back unopened at the end of the event. This is purely optional. Waiver Everyone must sign the Waiver for Audi Club Northwest s insurance coverage when coming onto the facility. This requirement includes drivers, instructors, teen, and guests (everyone). Parents must also sign a Minor Waiver on behalf of participating teens. No exceptions. If you would like to read the waivers before the event you can find them on our website under Resources, Driving School Materials. Vehicle Preparation Requirement and Use in Events - Your vehicle's components will have amplified wear when operated on a road course or autocross. Remaining brake pads, tires, oils, fluids, and other maintenance thresholds (Consumables) deemed acceptable by the manufacturer for normal highway and street use may not be adequate for a high performance driving event. It is your responsibility as a Participant to ensure that your vehicle has adequate remaining consumables and that it is prepared and safe for the registered event. It is also expected that the Participant will adhere to any warnings and data provided by their vehicle s onboard computer during the event. On-Track Physical Damage Insurance - Participants are hereby informed that standard auto insurance policies may not cover damages incurred at a track. Participants are encouraged to review their policies for applicability. On-Track Physical Damage Insurance may be purchased separately if a participant's policy does not cover such items. Contact Information If you have questions or cannot show for some reason please contact the event masters: Doug Cerretti can be reached at or via at cerr5000@yahoo.com. 9 Daily Check List o Entry to Bremerton Motorsports Park is at the main gate and upon entering you will be required to sign a waiver. o Find a suitable paddock location for the day. Please be respectful of spaces already taken by others, typically indicated by a plastic box or tarp or spare tire on the ground. o Check in and receive your event registration packet in the metal building. o The paper ticket(s) in your registration packet are for lunch. Carry them in your name badge holder for easy retrieval at lunchtime. Give them to the person collecting them at the head of the lunch line. No ticket = no lunch! o Do your own tech inspection. Check carefully for fuel, coolant, or oil leaks. Fill up with fuel, oil, coolant and check tire pressures before arriving at the facility. o Keep your tires correctly inflated for the way you drive. Typically, 5 to 6 psi. higher than manufacturer s recommended pressure for highway driving is a reasonable starting point. Never exceed tire manufacturer s maximum tire pressure. o If your wheels have a custom wheel lock, have the socket or key for it on hand during tech inspection so your wheels can be torqued if necessary. o If you have a tow hook make sure it is easily accessible or installed on your car. o Remove items from your car, including floor mats, spare tire (if it is not bolted down), jack, tools and garage door openers. Remove hubcaps, wheel trim rings, lug nut/bolt caps and clean out the glove box as well. If it s not bolted down, take it out. It s best to remove as much as possible before you come to the facility. Keep all valuables out of sight. o It is allowed and encouraged for you to keep your logbook in your glove box so your instructor can sign it any time during the day. o Find Carrie Stewart and tell her the color of Matt Ammon s 2001 Audi S4. o All participants should have finished or, at the very least, must already be in line for tech inspection 30 minutes prior to the driver s meeting. o Arriving for tech inspection less than 30 minutes before the driver s meeting may not allow the Tech Team enough time to review your car before it begins. If this situation occurs we will do our best to check your car before lapping starts but that is not a guarantee and it could be possible to miss your first session. o Arriving for tech inspection less than 10 minutes before the driver s meeting is considered a LATE ARRIVAL. There is no guarantee that your car will be reviewed before the meeting OR before your first lapping session. When this occurs, late arrivals are expected to work with the Lead Tech Inspector to find a time to review their car at 9

the Lead Tech Inspector s convenience. Again, this will not necessarily occur before your first lapping session and you will not be allowed on course until it is complete. o Stay with your car while it is in the tech line. Leaving your car can cause tech to run much slower for all participants. o Do not pull into the tech inspection line until your car is ready for tech. Waiting for participants to empty out their interiors and such in line slows down tech for everyone. o Attend all driver s meetings if you have any questions, be sure to ask them at these meetings. Be on time to these meetings and pre-grid staging. o Under no circumstances is it acceptable for a participating student or instructor to arrive late to a driver s meeting (whether one minute or ten minutes). When this occurs, you will not be allowed to drive at the event. Do not be late to the driver s meetings. o Under no circumstances is it acceptable for a participating student or instructor to miss a driver s meeting. When this occurs, you will not be allowed to drive at the event. Do not miss the driver s meetings. o Stay well hydrated, it s important that you drink plenty of liquids. Bottled water will be available in the metal building. o Focus on being smooth and consistent don t try to be fast. If you are smooth and understand the correct line, greater driving skill will come naturally. If you attempt to go fast before learning the needed skills, you ll find yourself taking a poor line and becoming a hazard to yourself and others. o If weather conditions deteriorate adjust speed accordingly. o Drive slowly in the paddock area. Be especially conscious of this after you have finished a session, where what feels slow is not slow enough. o Check the condition of your wheels and tires and brake pads after each session. If pad thickness gets below ¼ inch it s probably best to install new ones. o Always listen to your instructor. 10

Audi Club Northwest Guidelines for Posting Event Footage, Images, or Comments The ACNW Board and Event Masters require that all participants read and follow certain guidelines before posting videos, photos and comments on the internet using websites (Vimeo, YouTube, etc), social media (Facebook, etc.), or other resources such as car forums or blogs. Audi Club Northwest is dedicated to driver skill improvement through a program of structured training in carefully organized events that put safety and sharing experience as the first priorities. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in exclusion from future Audi Club Northwest events: 1. All videos must be positive in nature. It is not acceptable to post videos or any content that denigrates, defames, or criticizes the club, event organizers, instructors or other members. Such actions directly conflict with the spirit of all Audi Club Northwest events. 2. If you capture a serious incident using your onboard camera, it is unacceptable to post video footage or still photos of that incident ANYWHERE. 3. If you capture a minor spin or off, it should only be posted with the permission of all drivers involved. 4. You are welcome to share your personal learning experiences with others using these media, but keep in mind that anyone can watch you and all the other drivers that appear in your video. 5. It is not acceptable to post video footage that identifies your ACNW instructor without their expressed permission. 6. Event participants must comply when their instructor does not want in-car video, audio recording, or other devices (vehicle dynamics, GPS traces, etc), to be in operation. Beyond these guidelines, ACNW reminds all participants who do not want their license plates numbers captured in videos to remove or cover them for the duration of the event. Audi Club Northwest is not responsible in any way for videos that are posted by members or nonmembers online. Thanks in advance for your cooperation! ACNW Board Members and Event Masters 11

Audi Club Northwest Guidelines for Onboard Timing Equipment The ACNW Board and Event Masters require that all participants read and follow certain guidelines before participating in our events because we are dedicated to driver skill improvement through a program of structured training not racing or time trials. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in exclusion from future Audi Club Northwest events: 1. Audi Club North America and ACNW explicitly prohibit the use of timing devices during on-track lapping 2. ACNW requests that participants disable any built-in or third party timing devices so that they are not in use during the event. This includes iphone apps and mobile devices. 3. In situations where a data logger or onboard computer cannot be turned off, lap times must not be disclosed to other participants during the event or through online forums (including our Facebook page and website) after the event. Additionally, the data logger and/or timing information must not be visible to the driver at any time (worst case you can always use tape to cover the screen). 4. ACNW is aware that lap times may be available to participants as a result of onboard video equipment and would like to reiterate that lap times must not be disclosed to other participants during the event or through online forums after the event. Lap times are lap times regardless of the source! 5. Event participants must comply when their instructor requests certain vehicle features be activated or disabled. Thanks in advance for your cooperation! ACNW Board Members and Event Masters 12
