2 From -40 wind chill to almost +60 in just over three days!!!!! Talk about a roller coaster of a ride! My sinuses will NEVER catch up! I hope the massive temperature swing is a sure sign spring is gonna be early this year. Speaking of roller coaster rides, let s make this year the year D2 goes over the top on Chapter participation. We ve not had many folks suggest dinner ride locations and I KNOW it s not because we ve stopped eating! With Debbie and I being up in Spencerville, we don t get out much and don t have a lot of input to make for dinner ride suggestions, but I know there are a bunch of you big city folks who hear about great places to eat all the time. How bout throwing some suggestions out for D2 to meet and try out a new place? It doesn t have to be D2 s traditional Wednesday night it can be ANY night of the week! I know I eat three solid meals a day so I m up for going out anytime! All you have to do is let Rob or I know what you have a hankering for and we ll get out a 1-Call. Same holds true for weekend rides. Start thinking about all the places you ve heard about and would like to take a ride to. Write m down you so don t forget (I ve learned that the hard way) and bring m to our ride planning meeting. Suggesting rides does not mean you have to lead it (though we d love for you to) we just need the suggestion. We can work out the details later. I d love to see our ride calendar full of interesting places to ride too. It makes my work week go faster when I m looking forward to a great weekend ride. We need your help and participation in making our ride calendar sing and be the envy of the other District Chapters! This is the last call for Winter Rendezvous! We just heard from Deb Caldwell and she reported we have over 140 registrations in and counting! It s gonna be a huge event with tons of stuff to do. There s still time to get registered and join us for a great weekend of FUN! Howard has all the scoop on Indianaonwings.org (registration, agenda, maps, etc.). Until next time. 3 ROB & NATALIE RIDER Hi D-2 Chapter- We sure have been riding the weather roller coaster of Indiana. From 16 BELOW to 50 for HIGHS, it sure is hard to think about getting into the riding season!! But the next 60 to 90 days will turn the tides of this winters fury, to delightful warm Spring rides that we all want and will enjoy!! But for now, just sit back and read your Wing World with a hot cup of Joe and a blanket with a crackling fire in the fireplace. The time will fly by and it will be riding season once more. Again, think of places you would like to ride and write them down and bring them to our ride Meeting. Rob Rider-Ride Coordinator 8 Tips for Getting a Motorcycle Ready For Spring There are a plethora of reasons why the Winter can be so annoying; the constant shoveling of sidewalks, the bitter cold temperatures, the high utility bills, and the shorter days to name a few but the biggest downfall is easy to name motorcycles don t ride well on snow. Yes, it s with a bitter tear that we say goodbye to our bikes every November but like a kid crossing off the calendar in a countdown to Christmas, every Winter night in the books is one day closer to getting back on two wheels. Much like a heavy round of Spring cleaning to the home, here are some tips for preparing to get the bike out of hibernation. Step One : Winterize It Last Year It s a statement that s been repeated so Ad nauseum that it s actually annoying but failing to prepare really is preparing to fail. It doesn t do much good if you re reading this in the Spring but winterizing your bike before storage next year really is the most convenient way to get it ready to ride again. The main points of winterizing include: Fuel treatment While some would argue to drain the tank that actually has a tendency to cause rust. Instead fill the tank with gas and add a cold weather fuel treatment before running the engine so the treatment can cycle through the lines. Remove battery Cold weather is catastrophic to a battery so it s best to remove it and place it somewhere warm for the Winter. Fill tires The cold will suck the air out of the tires and cause flat spots so fill them up and get them off the ground with a stand if possible. 4 In the week before Labor Day, Eli, a dirt-poor country farmer won the Lottery - half a million dollars. So to celebrate, he treated his wife and their four kids to a trip to see the Labor Day parade in New York. He booked them rooms in the Sheraton International at the corner of Park Circle and Central Park North. They'd never been to anywhere like New York before, in fact they'd never traveled further afield than their local town, so when they got there they were completely bowled over by all the glitz, glamou Eli and his son Clem were particularly mesmerized by a shiny box with silver walls in the hotel reception. They'd never before come across doors that could move apart, and then automatically close again, as neither had seen an elevator before. So they were totally amazed when a little old lady entered Eli turned to Clem and said, "Son, go get your mother." 8 Tips for Getting a Motorcycle Ready For Spring Cover air box The air box will absorb moist air over the Winter so it s best to shove a rag in the opening. You should do this to the exhaust as well. Get a cat Rodents will nest in the air filter and chew through the wires on your bike so cover it, inspect it often, or protect it in some wives tale way such as tobasco sauce, soda pop, dryer sheets, or peppermint. Step Two : Fuel / Fuel Line Preparation If you parked the bike last Winter without adding fuel stabilizer you ve unfortunately got some work ahead. Some of the components of gas start to evaporate when left to sit in the cold which leaves a brown gunk (varnish) behind. If that varnish is ran through the system it clogs the carburetor and lines. If the bike is experiencing a hard start or no-start the fuel tank will need to be drained and the gas replaced and possibly the lines removed and cleaned out. Step Three: Battery Installation / Maintenance Kudos if you removed the battery before parking for the Winter and if so hooking it back up is a simple process. If the battery was left in and is now dead the fix could be as easy as placing it on the charger. If that doesn t work the cells might need to be filled with distilled water, the terminals cleaned with a foaming agent (sodium bicarbonate) or just buying a new battery especially if the current one is over four years old. Step Four : Tire Pressure You ll almost undoubtedly have to add air to tires of a bike that has been sitting for awhile. At the very least check the pressure so that it s up to the adequate levels something that should be done regularly anyway. After filling the tires, check the pressure an hour or two later to make sure they haven t developed a slow leak over the Winter. Step Five : Change Oil and Filters Some people choose to drain the oil and change the filter when winterizing the bike but why not do it at the beginning of the riding season for a fresh start? Even if the mileage isn t technically deserving of an oil change yet it s always a good idea to do it at the start of a new riding season and always replace the filter at the same time. Step Six : Brake Check and Fluids A number of things can happen to the brake cables and wires while in storage over the Winter, especially if the cat and the peppermint that was supposed to keep the rodents away didn t do their job or the bike shares a garage with a teething puppy. The brake cables should be checked for any fraying and the pads inspected for wear. Beyond that the brake fluid is very hygroscopic and absorbs a lot of moisture from the air so levels should be topped off and the fluid replaced altogether if it s been a couple years. Coolant levels should also be topped off at this time. Continued on next page GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER D2 FORT WAYNE,IN FEB 2019 PAGE 4
5 8 Tips for Getting a Motorcycle Ready For Spring Step Seven : Lights and Blinkers If the mice, squirrels, and other rodents have found their way into the storage space there s a good chance some of the light wires have become a nest somewhere. Either way a headlight cover and bulb can get broken from being accidentally smashed into while sitting for several months so it s important to test out all the lights (head, rear, brake, blinker). Checking the lights is a pretty easy fix that not only increases safety but can help avoid a ticket from law enforcement. Plus, bulb changes and fuse replacements are a minute-long job. Step Eight : Clean and Wax It s not a requirement but you want to be looking as sharp as possible for that first ride of the year especially the wheels. Plus a coat of wax helps protect the bike as those first rides of the Spring Lastly Ride Like the Wind! After another long Winter is in the rearview mirror and all the prep work to ride has been done there s only one word: Finally! 11 -15 Frick n degrees! Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!? I try to ride all year but that s just too darn cold! So I get to walk by my bike on the way to the car to go to work. Not the way I like to start my day. Talk about depressing! sigh Well there are things we can do as we impatiently wait for the thaw. One of the things is to check out our gear. The last thing we want is to get a nice day only to find out our gear shrunk over the winter! Let s start from the top and work down. Helmet Check it for visible signs of damage. It doesn t take much of a hit to compromise the integrity of the impact absorbing material. Check the manufacture date. Manufacturer s recommend replacing their helmets every 5 or so years because the impact foam starts to break down. Do a clarity check on your visor and clean/replace as necessary. Give your helmet liner a good sniff test and give it a wash if your eyes start to water! Jacket Make sure it still fits! Check the armor for signs of breakdown. Make sure all the zippers, snaps, and Velcro are in good shape. Give it a wash to make sure the reflective materials can be seen. Make sure it s not ripped or torn. Gloves Make sure your fingers aren t popping through and are completely covered. Make sure they re tight enough to stay on during a get off. Check them for cracking and getting thin. Make sure they re still comfortable and you can work all the controls. Pants Make sure your riding pants can still be buttoned and zipped up! If you have riding pants, make sure the armor is still good. Check them for cracking and getting thin. Make sure they re still comfortable and you can work all the foot controls. Boots Check the soles for wear and cracking. Same for the uppers. It s a good time to re-apply water proofing and put a coat of polish on them for protection. Make sure they still fit so you can ride all day in comfort. Rain Gear Now s a good time to pull it out to get some air. You can also check for rips/tears and make sure it still fits. Better to find out now before you need it! If you get your gear all cleaned up, checked out, or replaced you ll be all set for that first warm day (at least double digit temps!) to get our bikes out and hit the road!
