3 Introduction Congratulations on the purchase of your new custom electronic noise suppressors. Please take a few moments to read this manual and familiarise yourself with the controls, so you may gain the maximum benefit from the instruments. It is recommended that your instruments are serviced yearly to ensure continued performance. Please use the service history on page 21 of this booklet to keep a record of services as and when they take place. 4 Users Ian Coley British Olympic Shooting Coach I found that gave me not only good protection from noise, they were also a great help in being able to have a conversation with other shooters. I have found them very comfortable to wear for long periods, and they are much better to wear than ear muffs because they give you the advantage of being able to hear various noises from different directions. Mark Stone Magazine Editor & Firearms Expert Having worn a pair of for the past few months, there s no way I d go back to wearing anything else. The performance exceeds Puretone s description whilst the ability to detect approaching pheasants literally can, and has to be heard to be believed. Mick Nicholson Shooting Instructor & Champion Shot From hearing the instant the clay leaves the trap, the moment a pheasant first beats it wings to enabling a full unhindered conversation with my numerous shooting clients and pupils, increase the senses whilst 100% protecting my hearing at all time. 6 Digital Technology utilises the latest technologies and algorithms to control the level of sound within the ear. In addition, a push-button switch ( 2 only) is used to select one of two programmes. 1 are simple to operate while 2 offer greater flexibility and enhanced performance for each environment. 1 devices are programmed to achieve mixed protection for game and clay scenarios. 2 devices have an additional push button to select between two programmes: Programme 1 (Game) Optimised for game shoot where there are intermittent shots. This configuration also helps by amplifying sounds such as wings flapping, thus providing the shooter with advanced warning of approaching quarry. Programme 2 (Clay) Optimised for clay shoots where there are continued shots. This system has been designed to allow more flexible noise suppression. Page 6

7 Your (a) Volume control & on/off switch The volume control is used to set the desired listening level and turn the devices on/off. The output is, however, limited and will not exceed uncomfortable levels (for a typically normal ear). It is, nevertheless, recommended that the instruments are not used on full volume for prolonged periods, but at a comfortable listening level only. The function of these devices is to act as a noise plug and not a hearing aid. (b) Battery tray Allows easy access to the battery to facilitate replacement. Place a fingernail under the notch, then lift to open the battery tray for battery replacement. (c) Microphone The microphone is positioned in the helix of the shell and the ambient sounds are picked up and fed into the instrument. The ear provides wind noise reduction. (d) Push-button switch ( 2 only) Pressing this button will allow the user to toggle between memories. A single bleep indicates programme 1 (Game) and a double bleep indicates programme 2 (Clay). (c) (d) (b) (a) Page 7

8 The Battery Only use batteries designed specifically for this instrument. Replacement batteries can be obtained from your local registered hearing aid dispenser or local battery retailer. Use of any other type of battery will render the warranty void. With the an audible warning (series of beeps) will be heard in the device when the batteries require replacing. Ensure that you dispose of your old battery in a responsible way. Never leave any batteries - old or new - within the reach of children or pets. Illustrations shown actual size 312 Battery Zinc Air Batteries Please note once the tab has been removed from the base of the battery, it will begin to discharge, even when the device is not in use. To order more simply visit our online shop at: Puretone Recommends: Occasionally on very small ears, the use of a smaller 10A zinc air battery is required. Page 8

9 Wax Guard To minimise the risk of blockage and damage caused by the build-up of earwax, your have been fitted with an acoustically transparent wax guard. Select from the images below which wax protection device is fitted to your and turn to the appropriate page for advise on cleaning/changing your wax protection device. Replacement wax guards can be ordered from Fliptop Wax Guard Page 10 NoWax Wax Guard Page 11 Coil Wax Basket Wax Guard Page 12 Page 9

Please note that you can replace this wax guard yourself but you must take care when doing so. The internal tube is very delicate and if damage occurs this will not be covered under our standard warranty conditions. Coil Wax Basket Insertion/Removal Guide Tapered End Horizontal Bar Using a pair of fine tweezers, grasp the coil wax basket by the horizontal bar. Then proceed to insert the tapered end into the receiver tubing until it is flush and secure. To remove the coil wax basket, simply grasp the horizontal bar with a pair of fine tweezers and pull gently until it is released. Page 12

13 Operation Fit your into each ear, ensuring they are fitted correctly and comfortably. Switch the devices on using the volume/power switch and adjust the volume to a comfortable level by using your finger tip to rotate the control (this will typically be between the black and green dots). Never pinch the volume control/power switch with your fingers/fingernails as this can cause damage. Once they are switched on, you will be able to hear sound as normal; however, when the gun is fired the device will automatically reduce the volume of the shot to a safe and comfortable level. After the gun shot has passed the volume is automatically returned to normal. These volume adjustments take place quickly so perception of ambient sound and conversation is unaffected. Left Ear (Blue) Off On Right Ear (Red) Off On Off - noise plug (no amplification for trapshooting) Just On - low level amplification. Green Dot - gain for quiet sounds, attenuating high levels. (Typical operating position) Red Dot - full volume - offers some additional gain Some people may already have a mild hearing loss so the may help with conversations on the shooting ground. Set the volume between the green & red dots at a comfortable level. Page 13

14 Identification Each device is custom-made to fit comfortably and to ensure maximum noise suppression. On the top of the shell are the identification marks, as shown below. The right side has a red shell and the left side has a blue shell for ease of identification and fitting. Puretone Logo User Name Serial Number Serial number make up. 17 Care Your new is a precision-engineered micro-electronic protective device, and although it is robust in construction, it should always be handled with care to prolong its useful working life. If you suspect a fault with your instrument please consult your supplier immediately. Puretone will repair/replace any instrument as deemed suitable within the warranty period/conditions. The environment inside the ear can be hostile for the instrument. Earwax and moisture can cause problems with the device if cleaning is not performed on a regular basis. Wipe the instrument each time it is removed from the ear with a dry cloth to remove any foreign bodies. On the following pages you will find some useful tips on how to look after your new instrument. Page 17

18 Care Avoid dropping the instrument. When replacing batteries or cleaning, always handle over something soft, such as a pillow or folded towel. Always clean your instrument at regular intervals using either a dry soft cloth or the special tool provided. Do not leave the instrument exposed to high temperatures for excessive periods, i.e on a window sill or dashboard. Page 18

19 Care For prolonged use in hot and humid conditions, it is advisable to remove the instrument at regular periods of inactivity, clean around the sound outlet and leave to air for 5-10 minutes to prevent damage from condensation. Dehumidifiers are also available from your local supplier to help with any condensation issues. Never attempt to repair or adjust your instrument at home, as this will invalidate the warranty and may cause permanent damage. Always remove the battery when not in use. After removing the instrument, always clean thoroughly and store in a safe place. Keep instruments and batteries away from young children and pets. Page 19
