2 ETC 2014 European Truck Challenge The fan base The European test format of the ETC has been running since 2009, and the number of participating European trade magazines has been growing year upon year. With DVZ and KFZ-Anzeiger leading the way, a total of 16 trade publications from 12 countries with a total circulation of over 100,000 copies are now involved. The FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) newspaper also reports on this truck comparison test. At the ETC 2014, DAF, Daimler, Iveco, MAN and Scania took part in a series of exciting title bouts for the major Euro 6 comparison test. Head-to-head race The major international Euro 6 comparison test - the European Truck Challenge (ETC) was fraught with tension: from 10 to 14 November, five truck manufacturers - DAF, Daimler, Iveco, MAN and Scania - fought for fame and glory in Northeim in the Lower Saxony area of Germany. On the starting grid were the DAF XF 440 with 435 hp and Nm, the Iveco Stralis 420 "Hi-Way" with 420 hp and Nm, the MAN TGX with 400 hp and Nm, the Mercedes-Benz Actros 1843 "Streamspace 2.5" with 428 hp and Nm, and the Scania Streamline G 410 "Highline" with 410 hp and Nm. 2

3 At the ETC 2014, the top models for regional and national long-distance transport took part in some extremely exciting competitions. The approximately 142-km-long ETC test route - featuring numerous demanding sections - provided a fitting stage for the challenge. The battle was between trucks for long-distance transport, with cabs not representing the flagship models, and with engine power from 400 to 440 hp and a maximum torque from to Nm. Along the ETC test route - which is approximately 142 km long and which features numerous demanding sections - driving characteristics, handling and comfort are assessed. Added to this is vehicle efficiency in the form of an overall cost calculation. During the ETC test, also Diesel and AdBlue consumption and performance are measured. The lease rate of the respective manufacturer as well as contractual flat-rates for workshop repairs and other fixed costs - such as expenses for consumables and tyre replacement demand - are considered as well. 3

4 ETC 2014_The results Victorious: The new DAF XF 440 took the titles of "Cost champion", "Fuel champion" and "Innovation champion". The ETC focuses on the vehicles technology rather than on the quality of the respective drivers. For this reason, driver and semitrailer are changed after each test round in order to neutralise the effect of the driver and any potential differences in the handling of the semi-trailer as far as possible. Alongside the "Cost champion", the judging panel from KFZ-Anzeiger also choose a "Fuel champion", an "Environment champion", and an "Innovation champion". For the "Cost champion", hard data such as fuel consumption, contract rates and lease rates were dominant factors. As a result, the final rankings were determined by vehicle efficiency including both variable and fixed costs. Although diesel consumption played the key part in determining the "Fuel champion", AdBlue consumption and performance were also crucial factors. Awarding the 4

What's more, this was the second time in a row for DAF, as the company took victory at the ETC 2013 the previous year with the new XF 460.

Thanks to total costs of 64.0 EUR cent/ km (see table for individual results), DAF was awarded the most prestigious of the ETC trophies. What's more, this was the second time in a row for DAF, as the company took victory at the ETC 2013 the previous year with the new XF 460. In the cost calculation performed by Hans-Jürgen Wildhage from the ETC team, diesel and AdBlue consumption are the key considerations, but are not the only factors. The lease rate of the respective manufacturer as well as contractual flat-rates for workshop repairs and other fixed costs - such as expenses for consumables and tyre replacement demand - are also considered. This meant that the battle for the "Cost champion" title remained open until the very end. Hans-Jürgen Wildhage had a great deal of data to factor into his cost calculation and subsequently process before the result was finally known for certain: Behind the title winner - the DAF XF 440 with 64.0 EUR cent/km - followed the Iveco Stralis 420 with 66.0 EUR cent/km, the Mercedes-Benz Actros 1843 with 67.4 EUR cent/km, the Scania G 410 with 68.3 EUR cent/ km and the MAN TGX with 69.4 EUR cent/km. A step ahead: The Scania G 410 led the group of three contesting the "Fuel champion" title. The "Fuel champion": Scania, Daimler, DAF In the contest for the "Fuel champion" title, the battle already started from the very first refuelling. Every time a tank was filled with diesel or AdBlue, it was painstakingly recorded by the ETC test team - and was clear for all the participants to see. Ultimately, Scania, Daimler and DAF crossed the finish line together. If only diesel counted, then Scania would have been the winner, with an average consumption of 29.4 l/100 km. After that, there would have been a tie for second place between Daimler and DAF with 29.9 l/100 km as well as for third place between Iveco and MAN with 30.5 l/100 km. However, it was not quite that simple: The ETC saw trucks with different concepts used to comply with Euro 6. DAF, Daimler and MAN apply exhaust-gas aftertreatment in combination with exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR), SCR technology with AdBlue. Iveco and Scania don t use the EGR combination and only apply SCR technology with AdBlue. To ensure fair calculations, AdBlue consumption was added on with costs weighted at a ratio of EUR 1.10/l of diesel to EUR 0.45/l of AdBlue (as was also used in the cost calculation performed by Hans-Jürgen Wildhage). In the end, DAF, Daimler and Scania climbed the podium together, each with a total score of 30.3 l/100 km. The order was determined by performance: first Scania with an average speed of 71.5 km/h, then Daimler with 70.8 and DAF with 70.1 km/h. Close behind the podium positions was MAN with 31.0 l/100 km at 70.6 km/h and Iveco with 31.4 l/100 km at 70.3 km/h. We were there too: sponsors' logos on the refrigerated semi-trailer from Krone, an ETC partner. The test process The vehicles are each driven by drivers from the ETC team formed by the participating trade magazines. The "Environment champion": Scania The title of "Environment champion" at the ETC 2014 was awarded to the "Fuel champion" Scania with the G 410. In principle, all Euro 6 vehicles would have deserved the title. But in the field of the environment and transport, the focus is primarily on CO2 emissions, whereby it is diesel consumption that plays the decisive role. To all intents and purposes, AdBlue is CO2-neutral. With CO2 emissions of 48.5 g/ tkm, Scania is the forerunner in environmental friendliness, followed by DAF with 49.3, Daimler with 49.4, MAN with 50.2 and Iveco with 50.3 g/tkm respectively. The "Innovation champion": DAF At the ETC 2014, DAF also collected the "Innovation champion" title for the new GPS-controlled predictive cruise control (PCC) system in 6

The predictive cruise control function determines the ideal speed within the specified range, while the predictive shifting function selects the ideal gear, including Eco-Roll. These days, intelligent predictive GPScontrolled cruise control is no longer cause for excitement. Daimler has had the "predictive powertrain control" (PPC) and Scania the "cruise control with active prediction" (CCAP) GPS-controlled cruise control features as an option in their ranges since MAN has also caught up and fitted the new TGX 400 with its new "EfficientCruise" GPS-controlled cruise control for the ETC. Iveco was the only company at the ETC with a vehicle not fitted with GPS cruise control. The "Innovation champion" title was awarded to DAF, as the XF with PCC went straight to the top. Of course, close results between the GPS-equipped vehicles were expected. But it was still a surprise that the DAF XF together with the Scania G 410 and the Mercedes-Benz Actros - was able to claim the "Fuel champion" title. Despite its new GPS-controlled cruise control, the MAN TGX 400 was not able to compete at the same level. At the end of the race, the vehicle remained in close competition with the Iveco Stralis 420, which achieved the same fuel consumption without predictive GPS and only came behind the MAN truck in the test because of its higher AdBlue consumption of 0.4 l/100 km. This illustrates that Iveco could increase the intelligence of its conventional cruise control system; of course, the test drivers from the ETC team did their best to compensate for the lack of GPS controlled systems. In this regard, the ETC team of test drivers was awarded an array of stars as a result of the active analysis of driving style performed by the Stralis on-board computer.
