3 Development of the FEAD system Professional repair solutions for the FEAD system Higher demands for driving comfort increase the FEAD system s complexity. INA: Your OE partner with long-lasting experience. Today, there are two different belt drive systems within modern vehicles: The timing drive synchronizing piston motion and valve timing The front end auxiliary drive (FEAD system) supplying power to the auxiliary equipment and supporting the vehicle s comfort and safety functions Within the last decades, the demands on the FEAD system have steadily increased. Due to stricter legal emission regulations and risen expectations to a more comfortable driving experience, new technical features have been developed. Those have led the FEAD system to evolve from a simple belt drive into a highly complex system and development goes on and on. High physical burdens. While technical developments will define the future requirements of the FEAD system, the physical burdens on auxiliary drives will likewise rise steadily within modern vehicles. One of the reasons for this is the higher amount of power produced by the alternator. This requires more driving torque, thereby heavily influencing the FEAD system with its high inertia. Additionally, engines are being downsized to less cylinders to comply with stricter emission legislation. Moreover, downspeeding continously reduces the gasoline consumption by supplying high torques at low rotation speeds. This is causing severe torsional asymmetries on the crankshafts and results in vibrations in the belt drive, which need to be dampened and equalized. The increased stress naturally affects the entire system and leads to a higher demand for preventive maintenance activities. The above-mentioned trends and developments lead to strong system interdependencies and an increased system maintenance effort. In addition, more and more vehicle manufacturers are already stipulating replacement intervals for the auxiliary drive. As FEAD specialist, INA hence recommends replacing all relevant components in the auxiliary drive at once. As key developing partner to the automotive industry, INA has actively accompanied and enabled the historical evolvement of the auxiliary drive system. The increasing complexity and stress in the auxiliary drive requires a professional and holistic maintenance of the whole system. But finding the right parts is often very inconvenient and time consuming, as the connections between vehicle applications and product components are highly sophisticated. To eliminate this misery, INA has introduced the INA FEAD KIT. A repair solution for professional FEAD maintenance. In just one box, every FEAD KIT contains all the vehiclespecific parts and accessories needed for a complete and professional FEAD repair. Each KIT furthermore contains a diagram showing the vehicle-specific belt routing to support correct installation. To this day, more than 100 KITs are available for the most relevant vehicle models and new ones are added to the range every day. Based on the high variability in the existing FEAD systems, this KIT guarantees that garages will find the right repair solution within minutes. These belts show several V-shaped ribs in longitudinal direction, are thinner, and support higher friction, serpentine windings and smaller diameters of the belt pulleys. Therefore, they can carry heavier loads and endure higher tensions. To fit into different vehicles, they are today available in various widths and lengths. In January 2016, more than 200 additional belts will be added to the list to extend the relevant coverage for the French market. To achieve full-range coverage for the European focus markets, more applications will be launched throughout the year.
