8 Tuning Catalysts with Homologation Tuning Catalysts with Homologation HJS s ECE R103-approved tuning catalysts have been developed on the basis of our motorsport catalysts. Our 200 cpsi catalysts are the right component for self-designed exhaust systems. You will achieve higher horsepower with less backpressure without having problems with your EOBD or MOT inspection. The specially designed HJS cones provide an ideal exhaust gas flow into the catalyst, which contributes to optimal power performance. Please take a look at the vehicle range documents to see which vehicles have been approved according to the ECE 103R regulation. The catalyst (i.e. type and ECE approval number) is identified on the tag attached to the cone. According to the ECE approval, the installation positon of the HJS catalyst is the same as for the standard-production component. If the original catalyst is equipped with heat shields, the tuning catalyst must also have appropriate heat shields. The HJS generic catalysts must be approved by your Department of Transportation prior to initial use if the vehicle is not listed in the vehicle range documentation. HJS universal tuning catalysts have been developed on the basis of our motorsport catalysts. Our 200 cpsi catalysts are the right component for self-designed exhaust systems. You will achieve higher horsepower with less backpressure without having problems with your EOBD or MOT inspection. The specially designed HJS cones provide an ideal exhaust gas flow into the catalyst, which contributes to optimal power performance. HJS generic catalysts must be approved by your Department of Transportation prior to initial use. The vehicle exhaust emission characteristic will be influenced from different factors like engine performance, capacity, power range, exhaust temperatures and vehicle weight. For any installation of exhaust systems out of the applicable range please note that the indicated Euro norms are to be understood as a recommendation and help for system lay out only. The selection of the universal catalytic converter is based on the engine capacity, the power and the emission standard. 2. Make sure the replacement converter is installed in the same location as the OEM. 3. If the replacement unit is shorter than the OEM, try to keep the front brick as close to the OEM location as possible. 4. Install the oxygen sensor as close to the OEM location as possible. 5. Test vehicle was a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X with a 1998 cm3 turbocharged engine with 295 HP and Euro 4 emission standard. By reducing the number of cells and the catalysts size while optimizing gas flow, a 60% reduction in exhaust back pressure compared to the original part could be achieved. The turbocharger performance could be improved by 8HP and 12Nm torque. 14

15 Tuning Catalysts Glossary General Vehicle Type Approval An ABE (general vehicle type approval) for the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulation indicates that the tuning part does not need to be shown to an official testing facility after installation. An installation approval or registration in the vehicle papers is generally not required. Rather, it is enough to carry the vehicle type approval with you. E approval mark / E tested The ECE approval number indicates that the tuning part does not need to be shown to an official testing facility after installation. Product type approval (according to 19 of the German StVZO) A Product Type Approval indicates that the tuning part complies with the general safety requirements in relation to the specific vehicle. The correct mounting must be checked by an official testing facility in order to obtain the vehicle type approval. You will then be informed whether the vehicle modification will need to be registered with the Ministry of Transportation or if you just need to carry the product type approval with you. Individual Type Approval (according to 21 of the German StVZO) Individual Type Approval indicates that the general vehicle operating permit expires after the installation of the tuning part. After installation, the vehicle must be immediately inspected and approved by an official testing facility before vehicle use. integral-insulation High-temperature, integral insulation for exhaust systems Integral insulation is used to protect temperature-sensitive engine components against radiant heat and to improve the functionality (thermal management) of catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters. The integral insulation, which has been developed specifically for application in motorsport, is made up of a 0.1-mmthick, spherically embossed, stainless steel foil (outer shell) and a high-temperature-resistant, 4-12-mm-thick fibre mat (insulating material). The thinness of these materials keeps the amount of extra weight to a minimum. HJS's integral insulation stands out thanks to its excellent long-term durability at temperatures up to 1000 C. It can be used for all components subjected to high temperatures, such as exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters and silencers. 16 Tuning Catalysts STRUCTURE OF THE CATALYSTS METAL SUBSTRATE HJS tuning catalysts are based on honeycomb structures made of metal. These honeycombs maximize the surface area across which the exhaust gas flows, guaranteeing the best possible reaction process. The honeycombs have a different density and different number of cells (measured in cells per square inch = cpsi). One square inch corresponds to 2.54 x 2.54 cm. 17 Tuning Catalysts STRUCTURE OF THE CATALYSTS The substrate structure (A) A is coated with a highly porous ceramic coating known as the "washcoat" (B). B This washcoat massively increases the active surface area of the catalyst (by a factor of 7,000!). Suspended and finely dispersed in the washcoat are the precious metals platinum, palladium and rhodium (the load, (C)). C A B C Catalytic conversion of the pollutants in the exhaust gas is performed by these precious metal particles. The platinum and palladium particles convert CO and HC into carbon dioxide and water, while the rhodium particles reduce NO x to nitrogen. The precious metals simply initiate these reactions and are not altered in any way by the process. Apart from the temperature and composition of the exhaust gas, the effectiveness of the catalytic process depends very much on the quantities and the ratio of the three precious metals, and on the chemical composition of the washcoat. HJS's washcoat is characterized by its excellent ability to store oxygen and it is specially stabilized in order to minimize thermal and other ageing effects. OPERATING CONDITIONS FOR CATALYSTS CO HC NOx Catalysis begins when exhaust-gas temperatures are greater than 250 C. A catalyst achieves its optimum efficiency in a temperature window between 400 and 800 C. Catalysts are most efficient when lambda = 1.0, that is, when the air-fuel ratio is 14.7:1 (with 95 RON petrol). 17

Every passionate motor sport fan has now the opportunity of designing his exhaust system individually. It is also extremely helpful for the reconstruction or replacement of original parts which are no longer available. All parts are manufactured in stainless steel. HJS silencers reduce noise by absorption through centre perforated tubes and high temperature proof fibreglass. Accordingly, there is less gas flow restriction and hence back pressure is reduced and engine performance is optimised. The pipe ends are expanded to a length of 30 mm.
