4 Safety Considerations This apparatus has been designed and tested in accordance with IEC/EN and ANSI/UL Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control and Laboratory Use. This manual contains information and warnings which must be followed to ensure safe operation and to retain the apparatus in safe condition. 7 1 Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 About All-weather Case Type 3535-A All-weather Case Type 3535-A contains a measurement system such as Hand-held Analyzer Type 2250, 2250 Light or 2270 in one easily transportable and sturdy case. The case will protect the system against weather and unauthorised operation, provide power, and allow remote operation. A wide range of optional accessories and packages are available to extend your range of applications and increase measurement control. For integration into environmental noise monitoring and management systems, Noise Monitoring Software BZ-7232 is also available.

8 2 All-weather Case Type 3535 User Manual Fig.1.1 All-weather Case Type 3535-A with Outdoor Microphone Type 4952 (not included) 1.2 About This Manual This manual describes the contents included with your All-weather Case Type 3535-A, provides assembly, input/output connection, and basic measurement start-up instructions and power options. The aim is to enable you to get familiar with the system, while preparing it for use. Instructions on Using the Analyzer and Application Software In-depth instructions on the use of the analyzer and its various analysis software modules can be found either in the online help of your Type 2250/2250-L/2270, or in the relevant user manual that accompanied the analyzer/software.

9 3 Chapter 2 The System 2.1 Case Interior When you open the case for the first time, this is what you will see (Fig.2.1): Fig.2.1 The interior of All-weather Case Type 3535-A ) Space for modem/router In this space you can insert your own modem/router (max mm) and secure with the included velcro strap. 2) Strain relief posts Used to secure external cables such as the microphone extension cable. Thread the cable around the posts in a figure-8 pattern before it exits the case.

10 4 All-weather Case User Manual 3) Cable entry/exit For external cables to and from analyzer, AC power, etc. When closing the case, ensure that all cables have a downward bend to allow the rain shield on the lid to cover them properly. 4) 2 Battery QB ) Space for analyzer Insert your own hand-held analyzer, either Type 2250, 2250 Light or The analyzer is protected during transport by the foam inlay on the lid. 6) Power Panel ZH-0685 Provides power connections for the system, as well as a DC Out power switch. 7) DC Power switch Use the switch to turn off the power to avoid unintentional battery discharge. Useful when the connected modem/router does not have its own power switch 8) Cable channel Protective foam support that provides orderly arrangement of the cables. 9) 2 Charger ZG-0857 charges the included Li-Ion batteries. 10) Space for microphone Insert your analyzer s ½ microphone preamplifier here when not in use or mounted. 11 CHAPTER 2 The System Connecting the Components All cables are clearly marked with source/usage information (battery, charger, etc.) Power Panel The batteries, chargers, analyzer and, if used, modem/router connect to the Power Panel (Fig.2.2) according to markings on the panel and cables. Battery 1 and 2 Connect Battery 1 and Battery 2 (number 4 in Fig.2.1) to the corresponding cable a from the Power Panel. Analyzer 1) Remove the hinged cover on the analyzer. 2) Connect the Ext. Power cable a coming from power panel to the Ext. Power socket of the analyzer. 3) Connect the Trigger Input cable a coming from the power panel to the analyzer Trigger Input socket b. This connection allows a Type 2250 or 2270 to read the DC Out voltage of the power panel. Alternatively, you can connect an external trigger source to the Trigger Input socket of the analyzer e.g. to manually trigger sound recording. Microphone Connect your Microphone extension cable to the analyzer and route it to the outdoor microphone assembly through the cable channel underneath the Analyzer and the Cable Exit (number 3 in Fig.2.1). See microphone connection instructions in the user manual for your analyzer. a. Not visible in Fig.2.1. b. 12 6 All-weather Case User Manual Fig.2.3 Example of the components connected to the power panel Connecting Optional Components Modem/Router The connection of a modem or router for wireless communication with the 3535-A system depends on the type of network, wireless broadband and telephone connections available and the analyzer you are using. The following connection considerations must be kept in mind when setting up communication for the system: Telephone connection Do you have landline or wireless facilities? Network connection Will real-time communication be over the Internet, LAN (Type 2270 only) or WLAN? Analyzer Must the connection between the modem/router and analyzer be via the CF card or LAN (Type 2250/2250-L or 2270, respectively)? Data transfer to a PC and software management via Utility Software for Hand-held Analyzers BZ-5503 Will you set up the Analyzer and transfer data for archiving via the Analyzer s USB cable or wirelessly? When using BZ-7232 Noise Monitoring Software, communication with and control of Hand-held Analyzer Type 2250 is managed by the remote Environment Noise Management Software Type For information, see the User Manual for Environment Noise Management Software Type 7843

13 CHAPTER 2 The System 7 With these in mind, follow instructions given in the modem/router s user manual and user manual and online help of the analyzer. The interior foam profile and power supply cables support two specific models of broadband modem/router, however alternatives may also be accommodated with suitable cable options. The communication devices supported are: Digi Connect WAN family of routers ( Wavecom Fastrack range of high speed modems ( The Digi WAN routers are powered using the AQ-1782 power cable supplied. Interfacing this router to the analyzer can be achieved in one of two ways dependent on the model of analyzer being used. for the Type 2270 analyzer use a single LAN Ethernet cable. for the Type 2250 and 2250L use a LAN Ethernet cable in combination with a CF to LAN adaptor cable Type UL The Wavecom Fastrack range of modems are powered using the AQ-1783 power cable supplied. Interfacing this modem to the analyzer can be achieved using a serial to Compact Flash interface cable such as the socket serial I/O CF card (SL , available from Secure any modem/router inserted in Type 3535-A with the provided velcro strap. Power If using external DC power, connect the power supply cable to the DC In socket on the top of the Power Panel. If using mains power, connect the mains power cable to the AC In socket at the side of the Power Panel. If using a modem or router, connect its DC power cable to a DC Out socket on the top of the Power Panel.

14 8 All-weather Case User Manual 2.2 Case Exterior Fig.2.4 The exterior of All-weather Case Type 3535-A The following built-in features of the case provide secure, all-weather measurements: 1) Rugged outer casing. 2) Rain shield that stops rain from entering the case. The metal shield can also be used with magnetic fastening of an antenna or other accessory for wireless communication. 3) Eye (two provided) for fastening a chain, cable or U-lock to secure the case in its location. 4) Eye (two provided) for padlock to ensure that the case stays closed during measurement. 2.3 Part of a Measurement Solution Adding Type 3535-A to an existing Type 2250/2270 configuration (microphone, analyzer, tripod, and measurement and calculation software), quickly converts your hand-held analyzer into a measurement station with its own power supply and communication links. Fig.2.5 shows how Type 3535-A fits into a portable noise measurement system configuration with Type 2250/ 2250-L/2270.

16 10 All-weather Case User Manual Microphones Outdoor Microphone Type 4952 is recommended for extended use in all kinds of weather. For less demanding environments, the microphone supplied with the analyzer will serve. Both lightweight and a heavy duty tripods are available for the microphones, and a microphone extension cable of up to 100 m can be used with no loss of precision Software Any Type 2250/2250-L/2270 application software module may be used with the analyzer in Type 3535-A. Though for monitoring tasks, Logging Software BZ-7224 and Enhanced Logging Software BZ-7225 with Type 2250/2270 and Logging Software BZ-7133 with Type 2250-L, are especially suited. In addition, BZ-7232 Noise Monitoring Software converts Type 2250 into a remote monitoring terminal controlled by Environmental Noise Management Software Type 7843 as part of an environmental noise management system. Note: For BZ-7232 configuration details, see User Manual BE 1818 (Chapters 8 and 11) for Noise Monitoring Terminals Types 3639-A and 3639-B. For other information, please refer to your analyzer s user manual Network Configuration with BZ-5503 Via a connection with Utility Software for Hand-held Analyzers BZ-5503, it is possible to set up and maintain real-time and stored data communications via a network connection: With the analyzer on the same office network (LAN/WLAN) as the PC with BZ-5503 With the analyzer behind a network firewall (Internet) and the PC with BZ-5503 on the LAN With both the analyzer and PC with BZ-5503 behind a network firewall (Internet) Fig.2.6 displays all the network configurations possible with a Type 3535-A measurement system. For network settings, see the user manual for Type 2250/2250-L/ Network Configuration with Environmental Noise Management Software Type 7843 When using BZ-7232 Noise Management Software, communication with and control of the Hand-held Analyzer 2250 is managed by the remote Environmental Noise Management Software Type For more information, see the User Manual for Environmental Noise Management Software Type 7843 Fig.2.7. shows the network configurations possible for a measurement system using a Type 2250 Hand-held Analyzer running Noise Management Software BZ For network settings, see the user manual for Environmental Noise Management Software Type 7843.

19 13 Chapter 3 Power 3.1 Power Supply Power for the system is provided by any or all of the following: One battery QB-0073 Two batteries QB-0073 External V DC One battery charger ZG (only if mains power is available) Two battery chargers ZG (only if mains power is available) The batteries, chargers and external DC power supply are all connected to the power panel, which directs power to the source with the highest voltage to supply the measurement system. You may connect or disconnect power sources at any time without interrupting the measurement, as long as one power source remains in operation. This allows, for example, hotswapping of batteries. The analyzer s internal battery QB-0061 ensures continuous measurements even with system power failures. A country-specific mains cable is supplied with Type 3535-A for charging and power supply with the battery chargers. Fig.3.1 gives a schematic diagram of the power panel and connections. Note: The ZG battery chargers are powered by power panel AC mains cables. The optional ZG-0857 battery charger is delivered with its own mains power cable for use inside the Type 3535-A

One battery s typical operating time powering an analyzer is 45 hours when the analyzer s power settings are set to the minimum, for example, switching the Turn Off Backlight and Turn Off Backlight Dim power settings to After 1 min will reduce the power consumption of the batteries by up to 30% when compared to the maximum settings. Using the analyzer s Timer facility may also extend battery operating time, because the analyzer is only switched on when it is required. For example, setting the timer to turn on the analyzer during daytime hours for daytime measurements. See your analyzer s user manual for power setting and timer configurations.

21 CHAPTER 3 Power 15 Battery Discharge Voltage Connecting the analyzer s Trigger Input socket (for Type 2250/2270 only) to the power panel in Type 3535-A allows you to read the DC out voltage of the power panel. If you are connected to the system via mobile phone or network (LAN/Internet), you can remotely check the output voltage. You can also receive warning messages if it drops below a preset limit. a After the batteries in Type 3535-A are discharged, the analyzer will continue to measure until its internal battery, if installed, is discharged. A typical discharge voltage curve (DC Out) for Type 3535-A with Hand-held Analyzer Type 2250 is shown below. The analyzer was set up for low power consumption as recommended above. Fig.3.2 Typical discharge curve for Type 3535-A with Handheld Analyzer Type V h If Type 3535-A is powered by the chargers, ZG , the DC Out voltage is around 16.4 V. Battery Safety The battery has internal circuits to protect it against shorts and overdischarge, but for optimum safety and battery life, please handle QB-0073 as described below. Caution: QB-0073 may present a fire or chemical burn hazard if mistreated. Do not disassemble, heat above 100 C or incinerate. Warning: Never dismantle the battery. This might cause an internal short circuit, which could result in gassing, fire or other hazards. Battery Storage Store QB-0073 within the specified temperature range (see Chapter 5, Specifications). a. 22 16 All-weather Case User Manual Warning: When stored over a longer period, the battery may become overdischarged, which may cause loss of cell performance or damage battery function. To prevent overdischarge, recharge periodically. Battery Transportation According to international transport regulations, QB-0073 is not considered to be dangerous goods. For a copy of the manufacturer s Declaration of Conformity, please contact your local Brüel & Kjær representative. Battery Disposal and Replacement QB-0073 may be disposed of according to regulations for refuse disposal from your local authorities. Do not dispose of the QB-0073 by incineration. In Europe (and a number of other countries), batteries are not allowed to be disposed of as ordinary refuse or waste. Separate battery collection systems must be used. Replace the battery only with another Brüel & Kjær QB-0073 battery Analyzer Battery b It is recommended to fully charge the analyzer s internal battery QB-0061, using the analyzer s own charger before connecting the analyzer to Type 3535-A. An uncharged or half-charged analyzer battery will use the system battery to recharge, shortening valuable battery operation time. A fully charged internal battery can power the analyzer after Type 3535-A s batteries (QB- 0073) becomes exhausted. 3.2 Charging the System Each of the included chargers is used to charge one QB-0073 battery prior to measurement. Typical charge time is 9 hours. Both chargers may be used to power the system during measurement if mains power is available. Charging and Discharging Considerations Charge using only the recommended charger ZG-0857 or ZG Charge with the case lid open to avoid overheating of the chargers Charge only within the specified temperature range (see Chapter 5 for specifications) If the battery is charged out of the specified range, leakage, heat generation or other damages may occur. Repeated charging or discharging at high or low temperature may cause degradation of cell performance, even within the specified temperature range Do not exceed the rated discharge current (see Chapter 5 for specifications). This may reduce the charge capacity or cause overheating b. See your analyzer s user manual for a description and specifications on the analyzer s internal battery.

25 19 Chapter 4 Preparing for a Measurement 4.1 Preparing the System The following preparations should be made before you transport the case to the measurement location: 1) Fully charge the batteries. Charging typically takes 9 hours. Each charger charges a single battery. Warning: Do not charge the batteries with the lid closed, as this might lead to excessive heating. 2) If the analyzer s own battery is installed in the analyzer, it should be fully charged, using the analyzer s own charger, before connecting the analyzer to the system. An uncharged or half-charged analyzer battery will use the system battery to recharge, shortening valuable battery operation time. The analyzer s battery can also be used as backup and to ensure proper shutdown of the analyzer if system power goes out. 3) Ensure that the analyzer is setup as needed and its memory card is installed. 4.2 Setting Up the System The following preparations should take place on-site when you are ready to start measurements: 1) Ensure that the case s lid is facing up to prevent rain water from entering the case. 2) Ensure that the case is placed on a level surface and out of direct sunlight since this may cause excessive heating. 3) Ensure that the microphone is positioned according to measurement requirements and relevant standards. 4) If the measurement period is over a number of days, you can extend operating time of the system in a couple of ways: a) Connect mains power or an external DC power supply to the power panel in order to maintain power to the system.

26 20 All-weather Case User Manual b) Hot swap the batteries (see Chapter 3.1). c) Configure the analyzer s Timer to switch the instrument on only during specific measurement hours. d) Configure the analyzer s power settings to the lowest values (see Chapter 3.1.1). 5) Switch ON the DC Out to supply power to any unit connected to the power panel s DC Out sockets, for example, a modem or an analyzer. Caution: To prevent draining the batteries switch OFF the DC Out when the DC outputs are not required. 6) Ensure that any cable exiting the case is relieved of strain by looping the cable around the strain relief posts at the cable exit. Then bend the cable so that the rain shield can close over the cable exit for full environmental protection. 7) Lock the case by inserting a padlock through the provided eye(s) at the front of the case. a 8) Secure the case to its location by threading a chain/cable or a U-lock through the provided eye(s) on the side of the case. a a. Locking mechanisms such as chains, cables and padlocks are not supplied.
