1 Hawaii Energy PY2015 PV WH 1.1. PV WH SYSTEMS Solar systems installed under the Hawaii Energy Solar Water Heating Program ( the Program ) shall conform to applicable local building, plumbing and electrical codes, the manufacturer s specifications and guidelines, these and shall be authorized by Hawaii Energy prior to system installation. Where discrepancies, if any, exist between local codes and these Standards & Specifications, system installations shall conform to the higher standard as determined by Hawaii Energy. Systems must be listed in the APL and updated in Table 6 and/or Form 1 to be eligible in the Program. To qualify, PV WH collectors must be SRCC certified and UL listed SYSTEM PERFORMANCE Systems shall be designed to provide a minimum of 80% of the annual average water heating load to provide consistency of performance over the life of the system; and to achieve a minimum 20 year useful life as designated in the Hawaii Energy Technical Reference Manual (TRM). Exterior located tanks, pumps, controllers, and timers shall be permanently protected from inclement weather. Unless otherwise specified on the invoice, the contractor will be held responsible for the protection Solar Fraction The system design solar fraction is intended to range between 80% and 110% of the total actual system storage BTU requirement for systems in all sunshine zones. Table 1 designates the prescriptive number of PV panels per installation by number of residents and sunshine zone, and can be found in the Residential System Sizing Verification (Form 1) at the end of this document. Requests for exceptions may be submitted to the Program with adequate justification. There will be no set timeline to respond to such requests and the Program reserves the right to deny any exceptions.

2 Water Storage The minimum water storage tank size for the combined capacity of the primary and any additional tanks in retrofit systems shall meet requirements listed in Table Finish Tank Temperature A design finish tank temperature of 120 F shall be used for system sizing. Tank must be set to 120 F at installation Collector Tilt & Orientation Tilt and orientation derating has been evaluated and determined that the incremental system size would not have a significant effect in counteracting the derating. The Program has taken a simplified approach by requiring tilt and orientation information on the application, yet not derating system installations until further data can be gathered COLLECTOR SHADING Collectors shall not be shaded by any permanent obstacle at any portion of the time after 9:00 a.m. or before 3:00 p.m. on any day of the year, except by prior Hawaii Energy approval before system installation COLLECTOR RATINGS PV WH Collectors shall be of the photovoltaic type and shall have a current Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC) OG-100 rating and certification. The application for the Hawaii Energy program shall be Category C - Water Heating (Warm Climate). OG-100 Category C collector output data shall be converted to calories per square centimeter per day for each of the various Hawaii Sunshine Zones. These ratings were used to calculate the BTU/day output listed in Table 6. Based on these outputs, solar fractions were determined and provided the basis for Table 1, which designates the prescriptive number of PV panels per installation by number of residents and sunshine zone.

3 1.6. TIME SWITCHES All systems shall have time switches, which control the operation of the auxiliary heating system. Acceptable time switches are electric, electronic and spring-loaded mechanical switches. Electric and electronic time switches shall have a manual override feature. Digital time switches offer additional features such as weekday and weekend scheduling as well as vacation mode settings. Also, time switches with a back-up power source may ensure timer accuracy over the life of the system. Upon installation, time switch must be programmed to be OFF from 5pm-9pm and not remain ON for more than 24 hours at a time MANUFACTURER S SPECIFICATION Electrical components and wiring must adhere to manufacturer s specifications. Collector support structure must adhere to manufacturer s specifications 1.8. GRID TIE PV system must not be tied to the grid or a grid-tied battery system at any point during the life of the system. PV WH collectors must solely power designated system water heating PRODUCT WARRANTIES Manufacturer warranties shall apply to all products. Collectors shall be warranted for a minimum of 10 years and tanks shall be warranted for a minimum of 6 years.

4 Summary of PV-WH : 1. Collectors must be Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) certified 2. System must be UL Listed 3. System must be designed to achieve an 80% Solar Fraction using the number of panels specified in Table 1 4. System must be installed with a time switch programmed OFF from 5pm-9pm 5. Tank element ON set point must be no greater than 120 F 6. System must never be tied to the grid or a grid-tied battery system 7. Electrical components and wiring must adhere to manufacturer s specifications 8. Support structure must adhere to manufacturer s specifications 9. System components must adhere to applicable County code 10. System must be listed on the Hawaii Energy Accepted Products List (APL) 11. Tank must have a 6-year minimum warranty 12. System must be designed for a 20 year measure life
