The result is a recombination of artifacts of Ugandan material culture. Micro and mobile business was the key inspiration and the basis for innovation with a focus on including people with disabilities in this commerce. 3 HARAMBEE Alyssa Wongkee HAND-PEDALLED TRICYCLE DESIGN INNOVATION FOR DISABLITIES - A FRAME TO BE MANUFACTURED LOCALLY IN KASESE, UGANDA The goal is to improve upon the tricycle designs currently in use in Uganda, benefitting the manufacturer, user and economy. background In Uganda, hand-pedalled tricycles are used by people with disabilities as a means of transportation. Some are currently being fabricated by a welder, Kio, in the Kasese district of Uganda. The goal is to improve the tricycle frame, co-designing with Kio and users, using design thinking and manufacturing principles. CO-DESIGN PROCESS Research of context and understanding the problem benefits of the improved tricycle design Economical Community LEss Material Participation A more simplifed design reduces the material used. The new design eliminates the use of a spring in the braking system. Adapted tricycle allows for mobility. STRUCTURAL Seat Design Incorporating the seat into the structure of the tricycle reduces the stress on other key areas of the frame. 4 HARAMBEE Carmen Liu ADAPTIVE TOOLS CREATING HUMAN POWERED SYSTEMS AND PROMOTING DESIGN INNOVATION FOR DISABILITIES project goal: To create entrepreneurial opportunities for employment by designing a system with the potential for a collection of tools adapted to the hand pedalled tricycles in Kasese. DESIGN INNOVATION FOR DISABILITY beyond tricycle mobility an intersection of culture and collaboration a business opportunity background In the rural district of Kasese, Uganda, persons with disabilities (PWD) use tricycle wheelchairs as a mobility aid. It is possible for these tricycles to extend beyond mobility and be used to power other tools and/or devices. Nuts and grains are a staple part of the Ugandan diet. However, in order to grind nuts or other grains to eat, individuals have to travel to urban areas to use an electric mill or use a mortar and pestle which is not only strenuous but takes time. Working together instead of working for the disabled is a key element in the design process. Creating an open discussion, we learn the use of approriate technologies and gain a better understanding of local context and culture. It is constructed out of angle iron and is manually adjustable to and from the chain. This ensures good alignment and tension for different types of tricycles. so what? adapting a mill to a tricycle is just the beginning. The key part is in the joint that connects to the tricycle's drivetrain. This makes it possibile to operate any tool that can be adapted to a similar system. thereby increasing social mobility.
