The Trolleybus Society. An Appeal for Information. Does anyone recall this organisation or have any information about it? At the January Chiswick transport fair I purchased a number of newsletters published by the Society between 1956 and 59. Until then, I had been under the impression that the BTS (as Reading Transport Society) and the NTA were the first trolleybus enthusiasts' societies in the UK, and was not aware that a previous society catering for enthusiasts had existed, infact between 1952 and The newsletters, published monthly, and running from number 1 to number 57 are typed A4 size, usually running to 6 pages contain a wealth of detail on developments on, mainly, British systems. The organisation was clearly Northern based (Bradford infact) and so there is a distinct Northern bias in the coverage, although London developments, withdrawals, transfers etc are

12 covered in detail. Lesser known (today at least) systems such as St Helens and South Lancs are featured prominently. I would like to investigate the history of this Society further, perhaps with a view to reprinting the newsletters (if a full set can be located), or a least writing an article for Trolleybus Magazine. So, can anyone help? What I would be interested in is as follows: 1. Newsletters. Especially nos 1 to Any other published material. 3. Any memories, anecdotes from surviving members. 4. Photos taken on tours*, especially if previously unpublished and/or showing participating members. * eg Nottingham 15/4/56, Portsmouth 7/9 56 and Bradford 6/10/57. A couple even spotted the obscure clue - a reference to the electric traction historian, E. K. Stretch who wrote a history of the system in TM 64. The first correct entry was from Patrick Perry. This Month's Competition In the last newsletter I asked for questions to be submitted by members. So this month's question is from Eric Challoner, who asks: What system had a reversing triangle installed, that was heavily used and definitely required but only accessed on one day each year? A prize for the first correct answer.

14 Could you fox the members? Have a go at thinking up and submitting a question for the newsletter's regular quiz. Questions can be eg. factual as above, photographic, cryptic, or just plain devious and requiring some thought. As I have learnt, questions which can be easily "googled" are easily solved! They should not, however, be impossible (although note that if no correct entry is submitted, then the prize will be awarded to the question setter.)
