9 COMPANY BACKGROUND WITH I.A.Q.G. As a major equipment supplier, we decided to join in 2001 to participate in and influence this major international initiative G. Garland is Smiths I.A.Q.G. Representative and a current voting Council Member AS9100 has since become the target system standard for dedicated Aerospace sites in the Electronic Systems Division Electronic Systems, Cheltenham (main UK site) has approval through L.R.Q.A., with the six other US Sites also pursuing third party approval First Article (AS9102) and Variation of Key Characteristics (AS9103) will also be adopted - currently under evaluation I.A.Q.G. activities/progress periodically flowed down to both Electronic Systems and Aerospace-wide Quality Steering Groups April 11th, 2003 Edinburgh General Assembly Page 9/14

10 I.A.Q.G. - BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP Substantial reduction in Quality System Audits at our sites, which are Non Value Added Consequent reduction in System Non-conformances, where significant effort is expended to resolve Focus is therefore on product issues, which is the very concentration we need Development of excellent working relationships with our international ional customers at the highest possible level April 11th, 2003 Edinburgh General Assembly Page 10/14

12 I.A.Q.G./AS9100 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED Lower level staff in some member organisations not fully aware - or they don t support the aims Suppliers need to push back when an I.A.Q.G. member company insists on system audit activity, despite an AS9100 approval being in place Initiatives (AS9100/AS9102/AS9103 etc.) are being flowed down by primes, without internal implementation or lower level staff familiarisation Lower tier suppliers who only deal with one I.A.Q.G. member do not n yet see the benefits of AS9100 approval April 11th, 2003 Edinburgh General Assembly Page 12/14

13 RECOMMENDATIONS PRIMES/MAJOR EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS consider joining the I.A.Q.G., and help to influence the process to develop a common International approach to Quality related matters in our industry SMALLER SUPPLIERS/SUB-CONTRACTORS Seek approval to the AS9100 standard via one of the accredited assessment a organisations - if you undertake work for any I.A.Q.G. member company, it will become a compulsory requirement Keep up to date on I.A.Q.G. progress via S.B.A.C. or other trade organisations - attendance at S.B.A.C. annual Quality workshops ion the U.K. will assist April 11th, 2003 Edinburgh General Assembly Page 13/14

14 NEXT S.B.A.C. ANNUAL QUALITY WORKSHOP Set for November 6th 2003 Venue to be determined, but a central U.K. location will be selected Agenda being developed currently, but will include I.A.Q.G. update and Regulatory body (C.A.A.) view as a minimum, plus hopefully MoD inputi Hope to see you there!
