AIRPORT TERMINAL SERVICES, Inc Jet Bridge Module
Introduction This training module is designed to familiarize you with the operational aspects of a Jetway. You are responsible for reading and understanding the content contained within this module. If there is any information that you do not understand, please consult your trainer, supervisor or manager for assistance. Upon completion of this module, if you successfully: 1. Complete module test with a score of 85% or better AND 2. Demonstrate to your trainer, supervisor or manager the safe operation of the Jetway by performing 6 check rides AND 3. Have your training file signed off by your trainer, supervisor or manager and Yourself AND 4. Have an airport ID and applicable airport test/designation/authorization You will then be qualified and permitted to operate a Jetway. PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKS Each day the vital fluids inspection should be performed on the Jetway. Each station has a copy of a pre operational checklist that covers both mechanical and vital fluids inspection. The following areas should be given attention BEFORE operating the Jetway by completing a walk around inspection. A supervisor should be notified immediately if any discrepancies are noted. Tire condition. Check spotlights & area lights. Travel alarms, and directional controls are in operation. Auto-level is operating properly. No hydraulic or fluid leaks visible. Remove all trash, wheel chairs not in use or any slip or trip hazards that could cause injury to employees or passengers Check bumper to ensure no damage or missing areas
Auto leveler operation checked prior to use Travel Alarms and Directional Controls Bumper to protect A/C Lights and audible warning devices Tires and Hydraulic reservoirs/ fluid lines
Procedures & Precautions Always check surrounding areas for proper clearances before moving the Jetway. Make sure all personnel and equipment is clear of the Jetway path for arrivals and departures. Never approach the aircraft until: 1. The aircraft has come to a complete stop 2. The aircraft has been chocked 3. The engines and Rotating beacon have been turned off 4. A guide person has signaled that It is all clear by giving a thumbs up NOTE: The Jetway should never be brought to an aircraft with the door already open with the exception of regional jets
Operation After ensuring the path of the Jetway is clear and checks complete Jetway operation may commence. All operators must stand on/in the approved area for Jetway movement. Some Jetways will not operate unless you are standing on the platform Turn the Jetway power on via the key or button Always ensure the direction of wheels is the direction you want to travel. Verify the pictogram against the actual direction the wheels are pointed
Prior to moving the Jetway you must receive a thumbs up or all clear from the ramp to proceed towards the aircraft The Jetway may now approach the aircraft in a slow manner. Some Jetways may also have guidance areas as pictured on the bumpers to assist in lining up A/C doors. At approximately 5t from the aircraft the Jetway should come to a complete stop so that adjustments to the cab can be made. The CAB direction should be in line with the aircraft door and height of Jetway checked for aircraft type. Aircraft sensor placement varies greatly by type. Always verify what aircraft you are handling and location of aircraft sensors such as Pitot tubes, Angle of attack indicators etc. These sensors may be hot so do not touch them or let any part of the Jetway contact them.
During final positioning the Jetway bumper should not make contact with the aircraft. A small GAP should be between the bumper and the aircraft With the Jetway at the aircraft visually inspect the height of the Jetway and the door. This is also the time to verify the door can completely open inside the Jetway. If the height or position is incorrect, reposition Jetway back readjust cab and then position forward. Do not attempt to reposition the Jetway with the aircraft door open! Once the Jetway is in place at correct position/height the auto leveler must be lowered/ turned on. The auto leveler automatically adjusts the height as the aircraft rises or settles with weight changes. Never use the auto-level to manually adjust the height of the Jetway! The Jetway canopy may now be lowered. The canopy however should never make contact with the aircraft. It should be lowered just above the fuselage. NOTE: The canopy should never touch any aircraft. RJ aircraft should maintain at least a 2ft gap between canopy and fuselage
Airline procedures may vary once the Jetway has been positioned to aircraft. Knock on the door and signal the flight attendants that the Jetway is at the aircraft and ready for door opening. Follow Airline procedures which may require the flight attendant to open the aircraft door. IF the airline requires ATS staff to open the doors, you must be trained and signed off in your file to do so. This module alone does not permit door opening procedures to be performed NEVER OPEN A DOOR UNLESS TRAINED AND AUTHORIZED TO DO AND YOU CAN VERIFY THAT THE DOOR IS DISARMED With the main cabin door opened, a PA announcement can be made to inform the passengers on items such as baggage claim or irregularities.
Prior to removing the Jetway an inspection must be performed to verify the area around the Jetway is clear of equipment and to re check where the jet way should be parked The aircraft passenger door should be verified that the handle is closed and in the door recess. The canopy may now be raised to its highest level Auto leveler turned off and raised. If a bell or other audible warning is available utilize it to warn the ramp staff that Jetway movement is immanent and that you are ready for a guideman
If the Jetway you are operating has gate power mounted on the Jetway ensure it has been disconnected and raised to the top. Never try and reposition a Jetway with the power cord still connected to the aircraft A guideman must be used to verify that all is clear and the Jetway can proceed to parking location Slowly move the Jetway from the aircraft and towards the Jetway box or outside of the safety envelope if boxes are not present at your airport The wheels of the Jetway should be entirely inside the box when parked. If using a safety envelope you must verify that the entire Jetway is clear by looking down from the cab. When parked, make sure to gather all items used for the flight, turn the power off and close the weather door.
