2 COURSE OVERVIEW The rapid popularisation of air travel in recent decades is leading many countries and their respective airports to stepped-up efforts in reducing CO2 emission and noise while optimising capital expenditure. Since aircrafts' emissions may account for as much as 75-80% total airport's emissions, the implementation of Fixed Electrical Ground Power (FEGP) and Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) Systems is becoming increasingly phenomenal throughout the world as it offers significant environmental, economic and emissions reduction benefits. Airports and airlines find their needs to reduce significantly the use of aircrafts built-in APU (Auxiliary Power Unit), hence minimising impacts on the local air quality and site audial impacts during aircrafts ground time. Many airports including Zurich, Barcelona and Hongkong Intl Airports have even prohibited APUs usage by enforcing the use of FEGP where available. While GPUs are relatively common, attention is increasingly being paid to the Installation, operation of the fixed and gate-based electrically powered GPU (FEGP) equipped with fixed PCA systems which consume remarkably less power and emit little to no emissions as opposed to their fossil-fuelled counterparts. There are however many improvements in both strategies and techniques critically required by Airport Operators on designing, upgrading, engineering, installation & maintenance of FEGP and PCA systems. Whether Fixed Ground Power & Pre-conditioned Air Systems (FEGP/PCA) have been or yet to be implemented at your airport, this unique opportunity will decisively enable you to significantly reduce, control aircrafts ground emission; shrink capital expenditure on GPU maintenance and fuel consumption; while improving faster returns on investment and optimising operational results of FEGP/PCA systems via reliable maintenance methods and capacity modifications. KEY ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED AT THIS PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Implementation, installation and operation of Fixed Ground Power and Pre-conditioned Air systems Preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and breakdown maintenance of FEGP, GPU and PCA systems Calculating emission reduction and Returns on investments through implementing FEGP and PCAs Facilities modifications required for optimal operations of FEGP and PCA systems Ensuring effectiveness in equipment selection, contract management and procedures during FEGP/PCA implementation Contexts and necessary skills to respond to potential hazards and FEGP/PCA systems breakdown Strategic considerations in replacing or converting engine-driven Power equipment (diesel/gasoline/lpg/cng) to electrically powered and gate-based units Economic and environmental impacts of implementing and operating fixed gate ground power and preconditioned air systems Operational exemption criteria for FEGP and PCA systems Estimating necessary ground usage of aircrafts APUs Airports operational procedures necessary in operating and maintaining FEGP Types of fixed ground power systems installation, costs of investment and maintenance Associated occupational health & safety concerns with operating fixed ground power units Compare and understand the cost-oriented and emission-oriented benefits and disbenefits of different GPUs technologies Amongst others

The conventional method of supplying air-conditioning to parked aircrafts is via APUs operation. While PCA systems are usually implemented together with Fixed Ground Power where available, this is not always in practice. In airports or landing gates where PCA is not offered, simultaneous operation of FEGP and APUs happens, or APUs independent operation takes place, resulting in higher emissions, noise and uncontrolled fuel consumption. In this session we explore in details the key considerations in implementing Fixed PCA systems, types of PCA systems and the cost-effectiveness of investing in such system Cost-effectiveness of installing fixed PCA and the returns on investment Ground support equipment displaced or reduced via use of fixed PCA systems Associated reductions on emissions by employing fixed PCA systems Managing key internal and external stakeholders involvement in PCA systems design and installation - Collaboration between HVAC, Control systems engineers and Ground-handling agencies Types of Pre-conditioned air versions - Designing Central PCA systems - Designing Point-of-use PCA systems - Initial costs of investment on fixed pre-conditioned air systems - The practice of implementing mixed PCA systems Energy efficiency between central PCA systems and Point-of-use PCA systems Consideration of hybid plants : central PCA systems with decentralised distribution equipment Criteria and technical aspects in selecting equipment for fixed pre-conditioned air systems Installation of fixed PCA in conjunction with fixed ground power case studies and scenarios MODULE 2: STRATEGICALLY MODIFYING AND OPTIMISING PERFORMANCE OF FIXED GROUND POWER & PRE-CONDITIONED AIR SYSTEMS Session 6 Maximising Operational Efficiency and Capital Investment of FEGP and PCA Systems Projection and estimation of Income from FEGP implementation Projection and estimation of income from PCA implementation Depreciation in capital expenditure from implementing FEGP and PCA systems FEGP and PCA systems life-cycle costs Maximising FEGP revenues from underutilised assets without increasing capital expenditure (CAPEX) Applications of PLC in monitoring and controlling FEGP and PCA systems Considerations in improving asset utilisation and apron traffic patterns through commissioning FEGP and PCA to ground-handling agencies

One major challenge with airport operators implementing FEGP and PCA systems, is to decide the timeframe where APUs are permitted to run in replacement of, or simultaneously, with FEGP and PCA systems. Other critical factors that may give rise to prioritised use of APUs throughout aircrafts ground time, or increase the period in which APUs are operated include extreme weather conditions, availability of FEGP and PCA, etc. In development of operational procedures that are communicated to airlines, airport operators need to take into account many key considerations. In this session we explore one particular aspect of aforementioned procedures APUs operating time modelling Key criteria in calculating aircrafts APUs usage and defining APUs operating time - Aircrafts characteristics and APU types - Aircraft ground time: short haul / long haul and actual ground time - Aircraft stand allocation - Climatological conditions - Fuel burn and emission Departures and Arrivals procedures for aircrafts: deactivation and reactivation of APUs - Emissions impacts of APUs depending on availability of fixed ground power and/or pre-conditioned air systems - Usage of APUs in extreme weather conditions
