2 Foreword S (the nternational Organiation for Standardiation) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (S eber bodies). The work of preparing nternational Standards is norally carried out through S technical coittees. Every eber body interested in a subject for which a technical coittee has been established has the right to be represented on that coittee. nternational organiations, governental and non-governental, in liaison with SO, also take part in the work. Draft nternational Standards adopted by the technical coittees are circulated to the eber bodies for approval before their acceptance as nternational Standards by the S Council. 3 NTERNATONAL STANDARD S 419/ (E) Lifts and service lifts (USA: elevators and dubwaiters) - Part 6: Passenger lifts to be installed in residential buildings - Planning and selection 1 Scope and field of application This part of S 419 lays down rules relating to the planning and selection of lift installations for use in residential buildings, in order to ensure adequate service. t perits, in particular, the nuber of lifts and their ain characteristics to be defined at the very beginning of building design. Three quality levels are specified for the lift service, based on 6 s, 8 s and 1 s intervals at the ain floor, and designated as follows : - prograe 6; - prograe 8; 32. interval at the ain floor: The average tie, at the ain floor, between two consecutive departures of a car. 3.3 handling capacity (of a lift or of a group of lifts): Percentage of the building population that the lift or the group of lifts can transport within a given period of tie. 3.4 theoretical tie of travel: Theoretical tie for the car to ake the full journey between the two extree levels (travel divided by the rated speed). 3.5 up-peak (incoing traffic): Period of the day during which the lifts are used exclusively for the transportation of persons fro the ain floor to upper floors. - prograe 1. S 41915, Passenger lifts and service lifts - Part 5: Control devices, signals and additional fittings. 3 Definitions For the purpose of this part of S 419, the definitions given in S 419/l and S 419/5, together with the following, ap- Pl- 31 ain floor: Level to which pedestrians norally have access fro street level. 4 General rules 4.1 Nuber of lifts and their characteristics t is recoended that lift installations be provided in residential buildings having ore than three levels above the ain floor or if the distance between the ain floor and the floor of the highest apartent is greater than 8. The nuber of lifts and their characteristics should be deterined using the diagras given in annexes A to F. These diagras have been elaborated on the basis of the following criteria and those given in tables 1, 2 and 3: a) period of day: up-peak (incoing traffic); b) if only one lift is planned, its rated load has to be at least 63 kg and its rated speed at least,63 /s (see S 419/l, subclause 3.2.2); c) in each group of lifts: f such access to the sae lift exists at different floor is then the lowest level. levels, the ain - the rated speed of all lifts has to be at least 1,OO /s, - the rated load of at least one lift has to be 1 kg.

Lifts arranged facing each other or at right angles are far less satisfactory since circulation of users will be ipaired. Back to back arrangeents are totally unsuitable as they prevent the use of the appropriate control syste. 4.3 Control syste The diagras given in annexes A to F can be used only in conjunction with the collective controls defined in S 419/ Type of doors The diagras given in annexes A to F can be used only in conjunction with autoatic car and landing doors. 5 Selection of prograe The shorter the interval at the ain floor, the better is the quality of the lift service. This interval has a significant influence on the nuber of lifts and their characteristics; the choice of prograe, therefore, requires careful study. For residential buildings, intervals of 6,8 or at ost 1 s, are acceptable, according to the quality level required.
